Imagine a tiny dragon that fits in the palm of your hand. It has scales resembling ancient chain mail and a piercing gaze. This is not a fairy-tale character, but a real creature — the crocodile skink, one of the most amazing lizards on the planet.
It inhabits the tropical forests of New Guinea and the surrounding islands. Unlike its relatives, its body is covered with large, rough scales with sharp keels. It really resembles crocodile skin, which is how the lizard got its name. This armor provides excellent protection from predators in the dense undergrowth.
Despite its menacing appearance, this “little dragon” leads a secretive lifestyle. It hides among fallen leaves and tree roots, hunting small insects. Its movements are slow and cautious, and its camouflage is so good that spotting it in nature is a stroke of luck.
Let's take a closer look at this miniature wonder. We will find out how it lives, why it looks the way it does, and what makes it such an unusual inhabitant of the rainforest.
Habitat and lifestyle

The crocodile skink is native to Papua New Guinea. Here, the lizards live in humid tropical forests, on moist soil near clean freshwater bodies. Sometimes they can be found near human dwellings or on agricultural land.
Tribolonotus leads a terrestrial lifestyle. It spends most of its time on forest litter, among fallen leaves, dead wood, and dry grass. It often takes refuge in abandoned burrows, which serve not only as a reliable shelter but also as a place to lie in wait while hunting.
Crocodile skink
This reptile goes hunting at dusk or dawn. It hunts insects. It eats any small crawling and flying creatures that come into its sight.

The mini dragon is a good swimmer. In case of danger, it can literally “go to the bottom” both literally and figuratively. Its ability to hide from predators in local water bodies, swim quickly, and walk along the bottom has saved its life more than once.
If the skink comes face to face with an enemy, it masterfully pretends to be dead. But as soon as the confused enemy hesitates for a moment, the cunning skink instantly “resurrects” and quickly hides in the dry leaves.

If there is no way to retreat, the lizard fills its lungs with as much air as possible and begins to make sharp, loud sounds similar to squeak of a rubber toy. A sudden high-frequency sound scares off voracious predators, and they tuck their tails and scurry away.
Note! The remarkable abilities of the crocodile skink do not end there. This little dragon has claws and is good at climbing trees. However, it is afraid to climb high. Instead, it moves nimbly along low branches and fallen logs.
Appearance

Crocodile skinks grow to a length of 18-20 cm, of which 9-12 cm is tail. The average weight of the lizards is 38-45 g.
Males can be distinguished from females by the following characteristics:
- they are larger than their tailed friends.
- weigh more;
- they have a calloused body for mating in the navel area.
- they have rougher legs;
- on two toes of the hind legs, the shape of the scales is modified.

Tribolonotus cannot boast of ideal body proportions. It has an overly large head, which is separated from the body by protrusions in the back of the neck. The triangular shape of the head and four rows of pointed plates along the back and tail give the lizard a resemblance to a small dinosaur.
Red Eyed Crocodile (Tribolonotus Gracilis)
The skink's body is dark brown or black, its belly is cream or white, and the area around its eyes is bright orange. The heads of young skinks are cream, beige, or light yellow in color. The lower jaw is decorated with black and cream vertical stripes, and small yellow spots are visible around the eyes.

A cream-colored stripe runs along the spine from the neck to the tip of the tail, which gradually disappears by the age of six months.
Housing conditions, care

The terrarium should be set up to resemble the natural habitat of the crocodile skink as closely as possible. Particular attention should be paid to the size of the terrarium, the substrate, and the equipment used to maintain optimal temperature and humidity.
Terrarium
To keep one crocodile skink, you will need a rectangular or square terrarium with a volume of at least 60x50x50 cm. When adding each subsequent individual, the size of the terrarium should be increased by at least half.
Skink in a terrarium
Please note! Experts do not recommend keeping two or more animals in the same terrarium, especially females, which are aggressive towards each other.
Soil
The bottom of the terrarium is covered with a layer of crushed orchid bark or coconut substrate. The soil should be at least 5 cm deep. Clean sand or soil should be added to the soil from time to time. A layer of leaves should be sprinkled on top, which the skink will enjoy digging in.

Decor
Crocodile skinks love to climb trees, so the terrarium should be equipped with driftwood or branches. Live plants are not necessary for lizards, but if you do decide to decorate the terrarium with them, choose non-poisonous species. Pieces of cork bark are perfect for hiding places. The more skinks live in the terrarium, the more hiding places there should be.
The terrarium should be decorated appropriately
Lighting
To help the skink produce the essential vitamin D3, the terrarium should be equipped with ultraviolet lamps. The lizard's “house” is illuminated for 13-14 hours a day. The ultraviolet light source should be replaced every 6-8 months, as the lamps eventually stop producing beneficial UV rays.

Temperature
During the day, the air temperature in the terrarium is maintained at 23-25 °C, and at night it is lowered to 20-21 °C. The terrarium should have warm areas heated to 30 °C. As a rule, these are the upper points of branches and driftwood located under the lighting fixtures.
Humidity level
The optimal humidity level for skinks is no less than 75%. To maintain the desired level of humidity, the terrarium is sprayed with clean water from a spray bottle 2-3 times a day. In addition, the substrate is moistened. Ideally, wet and dry areas are alternated so that the skink can choose the most comfortable living conditions.

Be sure to build a humid chamber for your pets. It can be made from a food container with a hole cut out for the entrance. Place a hygroscopic substrate inside the chamber, such as a filler that can retain moisture. An example of such a filler is sphagnum moss.
Ventilation
Ventilation should be lateral. One row of holes should be located at the top of the side wall, and another row at the bottom of the opposite wall. This arrangement of ventilation holes allows the terrarium to be completely ventilated while maintaining a high level of humidity for longer.

Water bowl
Skinks need large drinking bowl, in which the skink will bathe. A large water bowl can help maintain the humidity level in the terrarium. And don't forget to change the water regularly to keep it clean and fresh, as lizards often defecate while bathing.

Cleaning
At least twice a week, remove feces, pieces of shed skin, and uneaten dead insects from the terrarium. At least once a month, do a thorough cleaning and treat the walls with special disinfectant solutions that can be purchased at a pet store.

Please note! Disinfection helps to get rid of pathogenic microbes that thrive in a humid environment.
Diet
Crocodile skinks feed on insects. They eat any small creatures they find in leaves and forest litter. They are attracted to all kinds of larvae, beetles, all types of crickets, worms, and snails.
When kept in captivity, skinks are fed cockroaches, crickets, mealworms, zophobas larvae, maggots, fruit flies, and moths. Food can be caught in the nearest park, purchased at a specialized pet store, or at a fishing supply store.
This is important! Adult skinks are fed no more than three times a week. Young skinks are fed every day.
The insects are first rolled in vitamin and mineral powder with a high calcium content, and then fed to the lizards.
Reproduction
The mating season for crocodile skinks coincides with the rainy season. Fertilized females lay one egg at a time, up to six eggs per year. Their eggs are leathery, oblong, and relatively large. They reach a length of 3 cm and weigh 3-4 g.
The female buries the egg in the ground and stays nearby to guard the clutch. If the mother senses the presence of predators nearby, she digs up the eggs and moves them to a safer place.
Incubation lasts for 9-10 weeks. The babies hatch from the eggs fully formed and remain under their mother's care for several days. Newborn lizards are 7 cm long, including their tails, and weigh up to 3-5 g.
Crocodile skink
Fathers do not participate in raising their young and treat their offspring with indifference, but without aggression. The mother, on the other hand, cares for her young and, in case of danger, drives away predators with her piercing squeak.
The crocodile skink is a bright but inconspicuous inhabitant of tropical forests that looks like a tiny dragon: shiny scales, sharp teeth, and nimble movements, as if it came off the pages of a fairy tale. It cannot fly or breathe fire, but it can jump nimbly across leaves and hide well in the undergrowth. This small lizard lives in humid jungles, feeds on insects, and surprises with its unexpected resemblance to ancient reptiles.
Diseases and health maintenance
In nature, crocodile skinks rarely get sick. However, in a terrarium, their well-being is affected by the quality of their food and living conditions. Without ultraviolet radiation, the animal may develop rickets. Such radiation is especially necessary for young animals during their growth period.
If the air is not humid enough, the tribolonotus will not be able to completely shed its old skin. Such skin is dangerous for the animal's limbs, as it squeezes the tips of the fingers and restricts blood circulation in the limbs. If the old skin is not removed, it can damage the limb.
