Imagine a miniature dragon with a fancy hood that suddenly spreads out around its head. This is not a fantasy character, but a real animal — a frilled lizard. It got its theatrical name precisely because of this unique skin fold, similar to a cape collar, which it uses to intimidate enemies and communicate with its fellow creatures.
This Australian reptile has a memorable appearance. It has a slender body, a long tail, and, of course, that very “cape.” When calm, it folds along the body, but when excited, it rises with the help of long cartilages, creating an impressive sight. The color of these lizards usually varies from yellowish-brown to dark gray, which helps them camouflage themselves on tree trunks.
Keeping such an exotic pet is a responsible task. They need a spacious vertical terrarium with branches for climbing, precise heating, and high humidity. Insects form the basis of their diet. It is important to remember that this is a wild animal that will not become tame in the usual sense, but with proper care, it can live comfortably in captivity, remaining a living decoration for your home.
Habitat and lifestyle
The rainforest skink is a small reptile belonging to the agamid family, which also includes more than 400 species. In the wild, it is found on the northwestern coast of Australia and in the south of the island of New Guinea.
The animal prefers dry forests and forest-steppes with well-warmed soil and plenty of shelter.
Habitats of the cloaked lizard
Lizards of this species lead a solitary lifestyle. They mainly live not on the ground, but in various trees. Here they hunt various insects, small lizards, as well as spiders and even small mammals. Since the reptile is good at climbing trees, it easily reaches the eggs of small birds and eats them.
Description of appearance
Cloak lizards are quite large. Adult males reach a length of 100 cm and a weight of 600-700 g (sometimes up to 870 g). Females are significantly smaller, growing to a maximum of 80 cm, and rarely exceeding 400 g in weight.
Since they have the same coloration, the only way to distinguish one sex from the other is by size. It is worth remembering that reptiles in captivity are 15-20 cm smaller than in the wild.
The body of the lizard is colored yellow-brown and dark brown with shades of black. The name “cloaked” is associated with the presence of a large skin formation that wraps around the neck of both males and females. Thanks to a special neck muscle, the membrane periodically opens and reaches 20-30 cm.
Note! If the reptile is calm, its collar remains pressed against its body in a folded state. But as soon as the animal senses danger, it immediately opens it to its maximum to appear larger. In addition, the lizard stands on its hind legs and begins to hiss or immediately flees.
Interestingly, unlike many other species, it runs. only on their hind legs, uses its long tail (2/3 of its body length) as a stabilizer to maintain balance. When in danger, the animal seeks to find a tall tree and hide in the upper branches.
The rainforest lizard
This is interesting! When kept properly at home, the cloak-tailed lizard is practically fearless, so it does not open its collar. However, it can use it to regulate its temperature. As soon as the cloak rises, it means that the animal is getting hot. Although during breeding, the male may use this method to attract females.
Housing conditions
The frilled lizard is quite capricious in terms of keeping conditions. The main difficulty is that it can stand on its hind legs and easily leave even a relatively high terrarium.
Please note! In addition, reptiles are accustomed to well-warmed soil and bright sunlight, so it is necessary to maintain a consistently high temperature.
Experienced breeders recommend paying attention to these rules for keeping them.
- The terrarium should be vertical, with a height of at least twice the length of an adult's body, not including the tail. That is, the minimum height should be 2 m.
- It is extremely important to maintain a very high temperature with different zones – in the cold zone around 30 degrees, in the hot zone – 35 degrees (maximum +37). At night, the temperature is lowered to room temperature, but maintaining a minimum of +21.
- Several infrared and glass-ceramic lamps, as well as incandescent lamps, are used for lighting and heating. Do not worry that the lighting will be too bright — on the contrary, these are optimal conditions for a mantis.
- You can choose regular soil, sand, or coconut shavings (previously disinfected by placing them in the freezer for a day) as substrate. You can purchase special mats. Another practical option is rodent shavings (which are easy to replace).
- It is advisable to maintain the soil temperature with heating mats.

As for the humidity level, it should not be too high—50-70% is sufficient. Spray the substrate with water from a spray bottle twice a day. Alternatively, you can install a small sprinkler system. However, do not make the substrate too wet, otherwise you may cause the mixture to rot and bacteria to grow.
The rainforest lizard is a unique species from the agamid family
A pine branch or other tree branch must be placed in the terrarium, as the mantis lizard likes to climb and feels safe. Pine bark can also be attached to the walls. It should be positioned so that the reptile cannot leave the enclosure.
Diet
This species of lizard can be fed various insects and arachnids:
- cicadas;
- caterpillars;
- grasshoppers;
- beetles of various species;
- termite;
- mealworms;
- crickets;
- spiders;
- zophobas.
Please note! Adult specimens can be fed small mice and even bird eggs.
It is best to feed live prey; lizards are excellent hunters and can easily handle it. But you can also feed them dead prey, imitating the movements of the prey with tweezers. Sometimes mantled lizards even eat fruit, but this is more of an experiment than a regular diet.
Large collar-shaped skin fold
The feeding regime depends on the age of the reptiles.
- Young animals up to 6 months of age are fed every day.
- Pregnant females are fed in the same way, regardless of their age.
- From 6 to 24 months, food is given every other day.
- Starting at 2 years of age, mantled lizards are fed a little less often—2-3 times a week.
During each feeding, a little calcium should be mixed into the food, regardless of the reptile's age. It is recommended to give vitamin and mineral complexes every week. Along with maintaining a consistently high air temperature, this is the best measure for preventing disease.
Rainforest monitor
As for drinking, it should be regular. Animals like to drink, especially after feeding. Therefore, you should place a container of clean water and change it regularly.
Important! If a mantis is kept with other reptiles, it is best to separate them during feeding. This is because when eating, the animal's cloak sticks out slightly, which may provoke other inhabitants to bite it.
It is called a cloaked lizard because of the leathery folds on the sides of its body, which spread out like a cloak when it is frightened or showing its strength. It is a medium-sized lizard with a long body, clinging paws, and sharp eyesight, most often colored in green or brown tones — this is how it camouflages itself in the foliage. It lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, can jump from tree to tree, and even glide through the air. At home, it can be kept in a spacious terrarium with high humidity, warmth, branches for climbing, and shelters. It needs to be fed live food, such as crickets or grasshoppers. The main thing is not to disturb it unnecessarily: the rainforest skink is skittish, but with proper care, it becomes calm and interesting to observe.
Reproduction at home
Rainforest lizards can be bred at home. To do this, take a healthy pair, in which the female must be at least 2 years old (as for the male, he can be 12 months old).
To stimulate mating, you need to slightly lower the temperature and reduce humidity, i.e., the air should be warm and dry.
Unlike other lizards, mantled lizards spend their entire lives in trees.
After a month, the temperature and humidity level are increased again. The reptiles then become more active, which is reflected in their lifestyle and appetite. After another month, you can see the beginning of mating games. Immediately before mating, the male nods and thus calls the female. If she expresses her willingness, he climbs right on her back and starts biting her neck so as not to fall off.
Note! After the process is complete, the female is placed in a separate terrarium with moist sand at least 20 cm high. She buries several eggs in the ground – there can be 8-12, maximum 14.
The eggs develop quite quickly – after 10 weeks, the offspring appear. During this period, it is necessary to maintain a stable temperature of 28 degrees (but not more than 30) and high humidity. If the temperature is lower, the eggs will also hatch, but only females will appear.
Common diseases and their prevention
The rainforest lizard is very heat-loving, so it cannot tolerate even the slightest drafts. Frequent winds and temperature changes will weaken its immune system, and the animal will begin to catch colds frequently.
Also, if the conditions of keeping are violated, the reptile may suffer from other pathologies:
- inflammation of the eye membranes;
- external parasites
- skin fungal infections;
- tumors of various origins.
Rainbow lizard
For prevention, it is necessary to organize good feeding and maintain a stable high temperature. It is equally important to change the soil regularly and provide the pet with clean water.
Interesting facts about the cloaked lizard
The open collar makes the animal resemble a triceratops dinosaur that lived 66-68 million years ago. Reptiles also inherited elongated jawbones from their distant ancestors. Therefore, when the cloak is opened, the animal really resembles a small dinosaur.
Frilled lizards are quite social, they sit calmly in your hands and show no aggression towards their owner. These animals are non-venomous and harmless, so after handling them, it is enough to simply wash your hands with soap. Some owners also say that reptiles like to watch what is happening in the room. Sometimes you can “invisibly” feel their presence.
Reptiles can coexist together, but only within the same age group. That is, you need to keep either young animals (up to 20 months old) or adults (over 20 months old) together. Otherwise, conflicts are inevitable. It is also not recommended to place several males in one terrarium, but you can keep 3-4 females in one enclosure.
Cloaked lizards are quite expensive. The price for one adult specimen can reach 13-15 thousand rubles or even more. Moreover, it is not always easy to find one for sale — it is better to contact large pet stores or private breeders.
Chlamydosaurus kingii
The frilled lizard is a truly unique pet that can surprise anyone. Its famous “cape,” which is actually a fold of skin around its neck, makes it look like a prehistoric dragon. It is this impressive feature that gave it such a beautiful name.
However, it is important to remember that this is not just decoration. In nature, the collar serves to intimidate enemies, communicate with conspecifics, and regulate body temperature. At home, the lizard will also display it, especially if it feels threatened or excited, which requires special respect and tact from the owner.
Keeping a rainforest lizard is a task for a prepared enthusiast. These lizards need a spacious vertical terrarium with branches for climbing, a basking spot under a lamp, and a moist shelter. The right temperature, humidity control, and a balanced diet (mainly insects) are the keys to their health and long life, which in captivity can reach 10 years or more.
When you buy such a lizard, you take on the responsibility for an exotic animal with a vivid character. It will not become a tame pet, but with competent, unobtrusive care, it can show interest in its owner and become a living decoration of the house, reminding you daily of the amazing diversity of nature.
