Hummingbird Cichlid

There are many bright and unusual fish in the world of aquarium keeping, but only a few can boast such a combination of beauty, intelligence, and compactness as the tiny hummingbird cichlid. Its name speaks for itself: this little fish amazes with its shiny, iridescent color and swift, jerky movements reminiscent of the famous bird.

Despite its miniature size, it has all the characteristics of its larger relatives, the cichlids. It is an intelligent, active, and very territorial fish that is incredibly interesting to watch. It quickly gets used to its owner and can even take food from their hands.

A small but comfortably furnished aquarium with plenty of hiding places would be the ideal home for it. It is suitable for both experienced aquarists and those who just want to get acquainted with the amazing world of cichlids without buying a huge tank. Let's take a closer look at this little freshwater gem.

Habitat

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Endemic to Lake Malawi in Africa, originating in the northern part. The yellow color form has a narrower range — the border waters between Tanzania and Mozambique, part of whose common border runs along the lake. They inhabit rocky coastal areas at depths of 10 to 30 meters, as well as places where small streams and rivers flow into the lake. Aquatic plants, mainly Vallisneria, grow profusely in these areas.

Description

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

This stocky fish has a slightly elongated body and reaches a length of about 8 cm, but in aquarium conditions it often grows up to 10 cm. It has a long dorsal fin that is pointed at the end.

Its coloration is varied, with white, blue, and combined color forms occurring depending on the region of origin. The bright yellow variety is the most popular. A black stripe runs along the dorsal fin, and the pectoral fins are also partially colored in the same color.

Feeding

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

In nature, they feed on algae and the invertebrates that inhabit them. In a home aquarium, they will happily eat all types of live, frozen, and dry food. Their diet should contain foods high in protein combined with plant supplements in a 50/50 ratio. A daily diet, for example, can consist of bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp combined with dried spirulina — blue-green algae sold in flake form.

Maintenance and care

Cichlids need clean water with stable hydrochemical parameters. For more information on how to control and change pH and dGH parameters, see the section “Hydrochemical composition of water.”

High water quality is achieved by replacing 10–20% of the water weekly and installing an effective filtration system. Choose the most efficient filter available at a price you can afford. In addition to purifying the water, it also provides internal circulation, which is desirable. Other essential equipment includes an aerator, heater, and lighting system.

The aquarium should be designed to recreate the conditions of their natural habitat. A tank of at least 120 liters is required for a group of 3 fish. Coarse sand should be used as a substrate. Coral sand is an excellent choice; in addition to its aesthetic beauty, it affects the pH level, maintaining it at a slightly alkaline level. A must-have is piles of rocks and stones forming gorges and grottos. They serve as shelters for the fish. Several groups of plants of the Vallisneria genus can be used.

Behavior

The most peaceful of the Mbuna species, it is not territorial and adapts well to other cichlid species of similar size and temperament. They are aggressive only towards fish of similar coloration. They can live alone or in pairs.

Rotala Hra is an excellent option for beginner aquarists. To grow bushes, it is enough to plant them correctly and monitor the condition of the water.

Breeding/Reproduction

Successful breeding is possible when keeping one male and at least three females together. The tank should contain flat stones, which serve as spawning grounds. During the mating season, the male becomes more active, chasing the females to encourage them to mate and inviting them to his spawning stone, which has been cleared of debris beforehand. During this period, his coloration becomes more intense. During the mating season, feed the fish meat products intensively. When the female is ready, she accepts courtship and lays 10 to 30 eggs, immediately taking them into her mouth — this is an evolutionary defense mechanism inherent in African lake cichlids. An interesting mechanism is provided for their fertilization: males have a characteristic pattern on their anal fin that resembles eggs. The female mistakenly perceives them as real and tries to take them into her mouth, at which point the male releases his sperm.

The eggs remain in the female's mouth throughout the incubation period, which lasts 3-4 weeks. During this time, she cannot eat and lives off her reserves. If these are insufficient, i.e., if the fish did not eat well before spawning, she may expel the eggs prematurely or eat them.

After the fry appear, the female continues to care for her offspring for about a week; in case of danger, they will hide in her mouth. Feed the young with finely ground dry food and Artemia nauplii.

The hummingbird cichlid is a real gem among aquarium fish. Its small size and amazing coloration can decorate even the most modest aquarium, bringing a piece of Lake Tanganyika in Africa into it.

However, don't be fooled by its small size. This fish has a lively personality and needs the right conditions. Clean water, suitable neighbors, and plenty of hiding places are the key to its health and long life.

If you are ready to provide the necessary care, the hummingbird cichlid is an excellent choice. It will give you many hours of observing its interesting behavior and prove that true beauty is often hidden in the smallest creatures.
