Unlike many of its green counterparts, this Echinodorus is striking in its coloration. Young leaves appear rich red, almost burgundy, with contrasting veins. As they grow, they can change shade, creating a beautiful gradient from red to olive, but the plant always retains its fiery zest.

This makes “Red Flame” the perfect accent plant. It can be planted in the middle ground or near driftwood to create a focal point that immediately attracts the eye. The plant is not too tall, but its textured leaves with wavy edges add volume and liveliness to any scene.

Growing this beauty is not as difficult as it may seem. All it needs is good lighting and nutritious soil. Then Echinodorus will delight you with its appearance for many years, becoming a living “flame” that makes your aquarium unique and memorable.

Echinodorus Red Flame is not just a plant for an aquarium, but a real accent that enlivens the composition. Its rich red-brown leaves seem to flare up in the middle or at the back of the aquarium, creating the effect of a glowing flame. It is easy to care for if you provide good lighting and a little fertilizer — then it will delight you with its bright color and lush form. It is the perfect choice if you want to add warmth, expressiveness, and a little drama to your aquarium — without any extra hassle.

This plant is a product of selective breeding and does not occur in nature. One of the ancestors of Echinodorus Red Flame, Echinodorus schlueteri, grows in the tropics of America. Another “ancestor,” Echinodorus Schlueter, is also a hybrid.

Growing and care

Echinodorus “Red Flame” is a moderately capricious plant. With proper care, not only an experienced aquarist but also a novice aquatic plant enthusiast can handle it.

Echinodorus “Red Flame” has two forms — underwater and amphibious. The latter can only be grown in paludariums and open wet greenhouses.

However, the appearance of the plant differs from that which can be observed in its underwater form. In the air, the bush grows up to 1 meter in height. Echinodorus leaves are green with small red spots.

Water parameters for ideal maintenance

Echinodorus “Red Flame” grows best in soft, slightly acidic water. Experts recommend maintaining the following hydrochemical parameters in the aquarium:

  • acid-alkaline balance — 5.5-7.5.

It is necessary to install a filter and additional water aeration.

If necessary, Echinodorus can adapt to living in water with different hardness and acidity levels.

Lighting requirements

In an aquarium with Echinodorus Red Flame, the light should be moderate, or even better, strong.

The brightness of the lighting directly affects the saturation of the leaf color, so experienced aquarists use multi-spectrum light sources to adjust the appearance of the plant. For high-quality growth, Echinodorus “Red Flame” needs to be provided with lighting for 10-12 hours.

Soil and nutrient substrate requirements

The somewhat capricious Echinodorus “Red Flame” needs soil saturated with nutrients. Among the substrates from well-known manufacturers, the following products can be highlighted:

  • ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia. This is the most nutritious substrate in the entire Aqua Soil line. It is characterized by a high concentration of organic substances and microelements. It also contains a large amount of humic acids, which reduce the pH of the water.

  • JBL Manado. Nutritious clay-based substrate. It has a porous structure, capable of absorbing excess nutrients and then releasing them back into the aquarium water.

Fertilizer requirements

If Red Flame Echinodorus grows next to neighbors that do not need nutritious soil, you can supply it with nutrients using root fertilizers. The following products are suitable:

  • Tetra Crypto. Tableted source of micronutrients for better growth of aquarium plants.

  • API Root Tabs. Tablets to improve the growth of aquarium plants. Provides Echinodorus with large amounts of iron and potassium, which are necessary to maintain the bright color of the plant's leaves.

  • Aquayer Iron Plus. A solid source of iron compounds for aquarium plants.

  • Sera Florenette. Solid fertilizer for the growth of aquarium plants.

  • JBL Ferropol Root. A tableted source of iron from a well-known brand. The fertilizer promotes the growth of aquarium plants.

  • Dennerle E15 FerActiv. Solid fertilizer with a high iron content.

Additional carbon dioxide is required to maintain plant health and bright leaf coloration.

Reproduction

There are two ways to obtain new Red Flame Echinodorus bushes:

  • By dividing the rhizome of the plant. The parent echinodorus bush is pulled out of the soil, after which the root system is cleaned of soil and straightened. Old and weak leaves are removed from the rosette. Then, using a sharp knife, the mother plant is divided into 2 or more parts so that each part has several leaf plates and healthy roots. Each part of the rosette is planted in its place in the soil.
  • By forming daughter rosettes on flower stalks. In this case, young plants develop in place of inflorescences. It is necessary to wait until 3-4 leaves and the first roots form in the new rosette. Then you can separate the daughter plant and plant it in the ground.

When propagating Echinodorus “Red Flame” by dividing the rhizome, the growth of the mother plant improves.

Variations and forms of the plant

There are several types of Echinodorus that are similar in appearance to Echinodorus “Red Flame”.

  • Echinodorus ozelot. It is the “progenitor” of Echinodorus Red Flame. This plant is also a hybrid bred from Echinodorus Bart and Echinodorus Schlueter. The bush grows up to half a meter in height and up to 40 cm in width. Caring for this representative of aquarium flora is not difficult, so even beginners can acquire Echinodorus ozelot.

  • Echinodorus Rubin. A plant with ruby-red leaves and thick green veins. This Echinodorus is unpretentious and has a very developed root system. It is not demanding in terms of lighting, a light flux of 0.25 W/l is sufficient.

  • Echinodorus x barthii, also known as Echinodorus Barth. A hybrid plant with rich red leaves and green veins. Used to decorate the foreground of the aquarium, it looks good against a background of green plants.

Echinodorus Red Flame is a truly special plant. Its rich, fiery color can instantly enliven any aquarium scene, adding depth and drama.

Despite its regal appearance, this beauty is not that difficult to care for. With good lighting and nutritious soil, it will consistently delight you with its ruby-burgundy leaves. It is an excellent choice for those who want to make their underwater garden brighter.

By including this plant in your composition, you get not just a bush, but a ready-made accent. It can become the heart of the entire arrangement, around which the rest of the design is built. Let these flashes of flame decorate your aquarium, creating a lively and memorable picture.
