Vallisneria spiralis: a stunning imitation of the seabed

Imagine having a piece of the seabed in your home. Wavy ribbons of green sway in the current, creating a peaceful and mysterious landscape. This is roughly what an aquarium with Vallisneria spiralis looks like. This plant is not marine at all, but its long, twisted leaves are strikingly reminiscent of underwater algae.

Vallisneria is not only beautiful, but also very useful for aquarium life. It grows quickly, oxygenates the water, and serves as an excellent shelter for fish. Its unpretentiousness makes it an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Growing and care

Vallisneria spiralis is an aquatic plant that easily transforms an ordinary aquarium into an underwater forest, as if straight from the seabed. Its long, twisted leaves sway gently in the water flow, creating the atmosphere of a living, breathing world. It is unpretentious, grows well even for beginners, quickly purifies the water, and provides shelter for small fish. Vallisneria spiralis is the perfect choice for those who want a lively and beautiful aquarium without unnecessary hassle.

Distribution

The geography of the spiral valisneria is extensive and international.

The plant is native to North Africa, Southern Europe, Southwest Asia, and the Middle East.

Its range is subtropical and tropical regions of the planet. It is also found in North America, the Caribbean islands, and the United Kingdom.

In Russia, Vallisneria can be found in the Dnieper, Don, Kuban, and Volga river basins, as well as in the waters of Central Asia.

It grows in murky waters at a depth of about 1 m. It likes to grow alongside the floating bur-reed (Sparganium emersum). In this water layer, the plants do not compete for territory, and both occupy a wide niche.

Growing and care

This species is among the top 10 easiest aquarium plants to grow. Vallisneria spiralis can be grown in a herbarium throughout the year. It even grows in subtropical reservoirs and brackish water environments.

General care recommendations:

  • The plant is a background plant. The optimal placement plan is at the back or side walls.
  • Moderately warm and tropical tanks with a volume of 50 liters or more are suitable.
  • To prevent the bush from breaking off at the root and floating to the surface of the water, place a few small stones around the plant after planting. This will help keep it in place during the first few days of rooting. It is not recommended to completely cover the roots.
  • Vallisneria spiralis should not be trimmed directly in the herbarium. This can cause the leaves to turn yellow. In addition, leaves that fall to the bottom of the aquarium will begin to grow spontaneously.
  • If it becomes necessary to thin out the bushes, the plant should be removed from the substrate and transplanted to a new location.
  • In aquarium conditions, it reproduces vegetatively all year round.
  • Excessive copper concentration in the aquatic environment is harmful to Vallisneria. This element is found in large quantities in algae removal products.
  • If the leaf plates are covered with colonial organisms, they should be removed.

Within 1 year, one bush produces about 100 new plants.

Optimal water parameters

Vallisneria is a natural biofilter. The water environment in a tank with these plants will always be clean, as they absorb dissolved organic matter and produce large amounts of oxygen. However, it is still necessary to change the water, at least 1/5 of the total volume.

Recommended hydrochemical parameters:

  • total hardness — 1-8°dGH.

Plant growth slows down in cool water.

Vallisneria spiralis prefers soft water. If the hardness increases above 8°, its decorative qualities deteriorate and the leaf plates decrease in size.

Lighting requirements

The plant can be satisfied with diffused natural light. If the lighting in the room is dim, artificial lighting fixtures should be installed.

For example, different types of lamps. Intensity — from moderate to bright, from 40 to 70 Lm/l. Recommended daylight hours — from 8 to 12 hours.

Soil quality

Naturally silted soil is sufficient for the normal growth of Vallisneria. There is no need to add nutrients before planting in a new location. When planting this crop, make sure that the root collar is above the soil line.

Since the root system is very fragile, you should purchase fine-grained soil, from 2 to 3 mm. River sand is suitable for this purpose. The optimal substrate thickness is 3 to 4 cm.

Need for feeding

If the soil is well silted, no additional mineral elements are needed. Owners of aquariums with iron frame corners should be careful. The presence of rust has a detrimental effect on the plant's vital functions. Carbon dioxide supply is optional.

Features of reproduction

Noracora WWNoracora WW

This plant is valued by aquarists not only for its decorative qualities and rapid growth. No effort is required to propagate Vallisneria. It does everything itself.

  • Within 1 year, one bush produces about 100 daughter plants, which spread independently over the gravel.
  • If you need to control this process, separate a cutting with 3 new leaves from the mother bush and replant it.

Although it is possible to observe the flowering of Vallisneria spiralis in aquarium conditions, it is not possible to obtain seeds. Amateur herb gardens mainly grow female plants, so it is not possible to propagate them by seed.

Vallisneria spiralis is a real find for any aquarist who wants to create a piece of living nature in their home. Its long, twisted ribbons are not only beautiful, they add volume, dynamics, and a sense of naturalness to the aquarium.

This plant does not require any complicated care. Good light and normal nutrients from the water are sufficient. It grows quickly and reproduces easily, helping to stabilize the environment in the aquarium and providing shelter for fish.

By adding Vallisneria to your aquarium, you will get not just a plant, but a spectacular living decorator. Its swaying thickets will create that very stunning landscape reminiscent of the seabed, which will please the eye and benefit your aquatic pets.
