Frogmouth Water Squirrel: A Pond Invader as an Aquarium Decoration

Sometimes the most familiar plants hide unexpected secrets. You may have seen frogbit on the surface of a quiet pond or river bay—small rosettes of leaves that look like miniature water lilies. In nature, it often behaves like a real invader, quickly covering the water with a dense carpet.

But there is another side to this plant. It turns out that waterweed can be a wonderful and very useful inhabitant of a home aquarium. Its delicate roots create ideal shelters for fry and small fish, and its floating leaves gently diffuse light, which many inhabitants enjoy.

In this article, we will explore how a wild “aggressor” of water bodies turns into an elegant decoration. You will learn what conditions are necessary for water hyacinth in captivity, how to control its growth, and what its main benefits are for your underwater world. This is a story about how to tame a small but very interesting plant.

Distribution

The plant is widespread: its main habitat is Europe and Northern Asia, but it is found almost everywhere. In its natural environment, it grows in stagnant water or in slow-flowing water bodies.

Despite its unpretentiousness, in some countries the frogbit is on the verge of extinction (for example, in Switzerland). In other countries (e.g., Canada), it is considered a dangerous invader of aquatic areas, displacing all other inhabitants.

Cultivation and care

Frogbit is a very undemanding plant. It is often enough to place a rosette of leaves or a bud in the aquarium. The water depth for planting waterweed should be between 50 and 150 cm. If the plant is rooted, the depth can be less – from 30 cm (since the root will be in the substrate).

Water parameters for ideal maintenance

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

To keep waterweed in winter, the water temperature must be maintained at around +18 – +200C and +24 – +280Summer. Water pH – 6.0–7.0, water hardness (total) – 2–100.

Waterweed is sensitive to water purity, so you will need to replace about 1/3 of the aquarium volume weekly and use a filter.

Requirements for soil and nutrient substrate

Waterweed is not demanding on soil and substrate. You can use, for example, Tetra Complete Substrate. This is a nutritious substrate with a large amount of microelements and a small amount of macroelements. Any aquarium substrate can be used, such as Tetra Active Substrate.

Lighting

Common waterweed needs moderate lighting. The minimum power of aquarium lamps is 0.5 W/l, natural lighting is preferable, and the aquarium should be lit for 12 hours/day.

Frogbit is a beautiful plant that is often bought to decorate aquariums, but its beautiful appearance hides a serious problem. It survives easily and reproduces quickly, and when it enters natural water bodies, it displaces local species, clogging the surface of the water. From a decorative ornament, it turns into a real invader, interfering with the life of fish, insects, and other inhabitants. Therefore, even if the plant seems harmless, it must be handled with care — do not pour it down the drain or throw it away in nature.

Fertilizers

Waterweed does not require the use of fertilizers. However, if the leaves become pale or do not bloom, additional macro-fertilizers will be required.

Reproduction

Frogbit can be propagated by buds or shoots. To do this, the buds are collected in the fall and kept in water at a temperature of 18–20°C throughout the winter.0In the fall, they are moved to cooler water (24–28°C), and in the spring, they are moved to warmer water (24–28°C).0C), where waterweed blooms.

It is best not to purchase buds from unverified sources. If the buds come from an unknown water body, they should be checked for parasites and then, as a preventive measure, kept in a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate (manganese) for 1.5 hours.

Frogbit is not usually rooted; its rhizome with roots is freely placed in the aquarium in the water, and its leaves and flowers are on the surface.

Propagating waterweed by shoots is the more popular method. To do this, separate one stem with a root from the bush and transfer it to a new location, where it will sprout shoots. No special tricks are required, only compliance with the above conditions for this plant.

Other species

The two most well-known types of waterweed are:

Common or frogbit, Hydrocharis morsus-ranae

Asian or questionable, Hydrocharis
dubia

The latter is smaller in size, but otherwise looks exactly the same as the common variety.

Frogbit is a living example of how the same plant can be both a problem and a decoration. In nature, its uncontrolled reproduction can quickly cover the surface of a pond, which harms the ecosystem. But in an aquarium or small decorative pond, this feature becomes an advantage.

By placing water lettuce in your home, you get a beautiful and useful plant. Its round leaves and delicate white flowers create a peaceful natural look. And the roots hanging down into the water serve as a shelter for fry and small fish.

The main secret to success is control. In the confined space of an aquarium, you can regulate its quantity yourself by simply removing excess rosettes. This allows you to enjoy the beauty of water hyacinth without fear of it taking over the entire living space.

Thus, the frogbit demonstrates that even the most aggressive “invader” can have its charms. With a sensible approach, it becomes not a problem, but an elegant and lively decoration of your underwater world.
