However, do not think that this is a calm and peaceful fish. Diamond cichlids are the true masters of their territory. They love to dig the ground, rearrange the decor to their liking, and can be aggressive towards their neighbors, especially during the spawning season. This is a fish for those who are ready to observe the lively and sometimes dramatic scenes of underwater life.

Keeping them is not very difficult, but it is important to consider their size—adults can grow up to 15-20 centimeters—and their aggressive nature. A spacious aquarium, powerful filtration, and the right choice of neighbors (either other large cichlids or keeping them in pairs) are the keys to success. If you are ready for this, the diamond cichlid will become a bright and memorable inhabitant of your underwater world.

The diamond cichlid is a bright and active fish from the cichlid family, often chosen by aquarists for its unusual appearance and expressive character. It has a massive body, its coloration shimmers with silver-blue and green hues, as if sprinkled with glitter, hence its name. These fish do well in pairs or small groups, but can be territorial, especially during spawning. They need a spacious aquarium with hiding places, clean water, and a varied diet. With proper care, they live a long time and become a real decoration for your home aquarium.

Description

The diamond cichlid is one of the larger species of aquarium inhabitants. Its body length in artificial water bodies varies from 15 to 20 centimeters, while in nature the fish can grow up to 30 centimeters. The animal's body is flattened on the sides, the head is elongated, and the jaw with thick lips protrudes forward. With age, males develop a growth on their forehead that resembles a bump. The dorsal fin starts at the base of the head and continues to the beginning of the tail. The tail is trapezoidal in shape. The pelvic fin is small and pointed.

Colouring is a distinctive feature of this fish. It varies from steel turquoise to silver. Olive or dark brown individuals are also found. The entire body of the fish is covered with bright small blue or white dots.

The lifespan of a diamond cichlid in an aquarium is about 7–12 years. However, there are some that have lived to be 15–17 years old.

Habitat in nature

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

The diamond cichlid is native to the waters of North America – Mexico and the United States. It can be found in rivers, ponds, and lakes. The fish prefers to stay in the middle layers of the water. The temperature of the water body and the hardness of the environment are not very important for this cichlid, because it easily adapts to any conditions.

Aquarium conditions

To keep a pair of these fish, you need to choose an aquarium with a capacity of at least 300 liters. Such a large volume is due to the large size of the diamond cichlid, its love of freedom, and territorial independence. Therefore, each individual should have 150-200 liters of water.

It is advisable to cover the aquarium with a lid, at least during long periods of absence of the owner. Although the fish spend most of their time at the bottom of the tank, they occasionally like to jump out of it.

Water parameters

The following water parameters will be comfortable for the diamond cichlid:

  • Temperature – 22–25 °C;
  • Acidity – 6.3–7.5 pH;
  • Hardness – 10–20°.

Lighting

The lighting in the aquarium should be diffused. It is better to choose special lamps with adjustable power. Devices that give cold shades of light are well suited. At night, the intensity should be reduced. The duration of daylight hours is 10-12 hours.

Filtration and aeration

Diamond cichlids have an accelerated metabolism, which means they quickly pollute the water. In addition, these fish like to dig in the ground. Therefore, you need to choose only a powerful filter that will be able to maintain comfortable conditions in the aquarium. Aeration is a must. You should replace 30–35% (one-third) of the water in the aquarium every week.

Substrate

It is best to choose granite chips, pebbles, or small to medium decorative stones as substrate. Sand is not recommended because fish like to dig it up and stir it up from the bottom of the tank, which creates dust.

Dark blue or black colors are preferable. They will accentuate the fish's coloration and make it stand out from the rest.

Plants

Plants must be securely anchored to the bottom. For this purpose, it is convenient to use small vases that will prevent the fish from digging up or damaging the algae. The following species are well suited for an aquarium with diamond cichlids:

  • Anubias;
  • Aponogeton;
  • Bolbitis;
  • Crinum;
  • Lagenandra;
  • Echinodorus.

Decorations

These cichlids appreciate free space and open areas for swimming. Therefore, do not place too many shelters in the tank. Install a maximum of 2 decorative items per fish. For example, grottoes, gorges, driftwood, houses, etc.

Compatibility with other fish

The main difficulty in keeping diamond cichlids is their temperament. These fish are extremely unfriendly, so choosing neighbors for a shared aquarium will be problematic. It is better to keep them in a separate tank in groups of 2-4 individuals. However, even there, cases of intraspecific aggression may occur.

With age, diamond cichlids become more aggressive and display pronounced territorial aggression. This is especially true of males. It is these fish that often kill their neighbors in a mixed aquarium.

However, there are some fish that can withstand coexistence with such a difficult species:

  • Black-striped and eight-striped cichlids;
  • Cichlasoma meekii;
  • Black pacu;
  • Brocade pterygoplichthys;
  • Barbs;
  • Knife fish;
  • Astronotus;
  • Arowana;
  • Large gouramis;
  • Turquoise tetra.

Feeding

Diamond cichlids are omnivorous. They easily eat both dry commercial food and live food. However, their diet should be based on protein-rich foods. These are responsible for the formation of muscle tissue, the skeleton, and the development of the body as a whole. Sources of this nutrient include:

  • Artemia crustaceans;
  • Shrimps;
  • Small guppies;
  • Pipe fish;
  • Bloodworms;
  • Crickets;
  • Some species of veiltail.

In addition to live food, fish should be given dry granular food designed specifically for cichlids. It can be purchased at a pet store.

Adult fish should be fed once a day. The size of the portion is determined by the fish's personal preferences. However, it is not worth overfeeding it, as this will lead to rapid contamination of the water body.

Sexual differences

Male diamond cichlids are easy to identify by their impressive size—they are often much larger than females. Another distinctive feature of males is a large growth on the forehead that appears with age.

Reproduction and breeding

Geekbuying WWGeekbuying WW

These fish reach sexual maturity at the age of 1–1.5 years. Reproduction can take place both in a common and in a separate pond. However, to improve the quality of future offspring, it is recommended to use a special breeding tank. The water parameters in it should be as follows:

  • Temperature: 27°C;
  • Acidity – 7.0 – 7.6 pH;
  • Hardness: 15-25°.

Large flat stones and several ceramic pots should be placed in this tank as a substrate.

An increase in water temperature signals to the female that she is ready to spawn. She begins to clear the rocks, preparing her future nest. The female is capable of laying up to 1,500 eggs at a time.

In general, diamond cichlids are responsible parents who care for their offspring from the first days of their lives. But sometimes the male may eat some of the eggs, so it is better to remove him after spawning.

The fry appear in 4-5 days, depending on the water temperature in the tank.

That's all there is to know about the diamond cichlid, a bright and memorable fish. Its shiny scales and lively character make it a real star in a large aquarium.

It is not that difficult to keep if you are prepared for its size and temperament. A spacious tank, good filtration, and the right neighbors are the main keys to success.

If you provide it with the necessary conditions, this magnificent cichlid will delight you for many years with its energy and beauty, becoming a truly bright decoration of your underwater world.
