Breeding leopard geckos at home and how to determine their sex

Getting eublepharids is one thing, but watching new life appear in your terrarium is a very special experience. These lizards can successfully reproduce in captivity, but to do so, you need to create the right conditions for them and understand a little about their biology.

Before planning to breed, it is extremely important to determine the sex of your pets. This is the basis of the basics, otherwise you simply will not get a pair. Adult males and females can be distinguished by a number of external characteristics that become clearly visible at a certain age.

In this article, we will explain in simple terms how to distinguish males from females and what are the basic principles of preparing for the successful breeding of these amazing reptiles at home.

How to determine the sex of a eublepharid

Govee Many GEOsnubia Many GEOs

Adult eublepharid lizards have several distinctive sexual characteristics. First of all, you need to pay attention to the underside of the tail. In males, an arc of yellowish-gray dots is visible in front of the cloaca, located from one hind leg to the other — these are the preanal pores. At the base of the tail, behind the cloacal slit, it is easy to see protruding bumps. This is where the hemipenis, the male copulatory organ, is located. Females have a triangle at the bottom of their abdomen, which is faintly visible. They do not have any cone-shaped formations.

Male and female eublephars can also be distinguished by the shape of the base of the tail. In males, it is thick and wide, while in females it is slender, resembling a waist, followed by a lush tail. However, this feature is only reliable if the lizards have a varied and nutritious diet that allows them to accumulate nutrient reserves in the tail section of their body. Otherwise, the thickness of the tail base is irrelevant.

Differences between male and female eublephars

An additional sign of sex is the size of the head and the thickness of the neck. Males have a broad-boned and massive body, with a large head on a broad neck. Females have a more graceful body. However, only lizards of the same age can be distinguished by this feature.

Reptiles behave very differently regardless of their gender, which depends more on the temperament of each lizard. However, during the mating season, males begin to “mark” their territory by crawling and pressing their preanal pores against the surface of the terrarium. This behavior occurs only during the breeding season.

Eublepharids are undemanding lizards that can be bred at home under the right conditions: you need a terrarium with good heating, shelters, and a separate area for laying eggs. Reproduction begins with the mating of a male and a female, but it is important to give them time to get used to each other. It is easier to determine the sex in adult individuals: males have a wider tail base and a pair of bumps on the underside, while females have a narrower and thinner tail. Females lay eggs twice per season, and if the temperature and humidity are maintained, healthy offspring will emerge.

The sex of eublepharids can be determined starting at 4 months of age. By this time, all sexual characteristics have formed in males. The same cannot be said for females—they are not yet physiologically ready to reproduce. Their fertile age begins after one year. Therefore, it is better to keep adolescent eublephars separate from females to avoid fights and injuries.

The sex of reptiles is directly influenced by the temperature of the eggs in the incubator, so by regulating it yourself, there is a high probability of obtaining offspring of the desired sex.

In newborn animals, you can try to determine their sex using a flashlight (Rob Wagner's method). To do this, you need to shine a light on the cloaca area. In males, the hemipenes should be visible through the light.

The sex of eublepharids mainly depends on the temperature and incubation time of the eggs.

Mating

When selecting a pair for breeding eublephars, it is necessary to take into account the genetic compatibility of their morphs. Using a special calculator, you can determine the expected color when crossing different morphs, as well as find out if they are compatible with each other. Genetic incompatibility can lead not only to undesirable lizard colors and disappointment, but also to the birth of unhealthy offspring.

Attention! In addition to genetic compatibility, the health of the parents also affects the quality of the offspring. Only sexually mature, adult, well-fed, healthy animals are suitable for breeding eublephars.

Lizards that are at least 1 year old are considered optimal for mating. Although males are ready for insemination at 4-6 months of age, females can only safely carry a pregnancy from 1 year of age with a body weight of at least 45 grams. Theoretically, she can become pregnant earlier, but such early sexual activity will lead to the birth of unhealthy offspring. Moreover, the health of a young lizard can suffer greatly due to exhaustion of the body, up to and including death.

Even an adult eublephar lizard may not be ready to mate. Given the high sexual activity of persistent male eublephars, real bloody battles can occur between a pair. Therefore, creatures of different sexes should be kept in separate enclosures. Depending on the temperament of the male gecko, he may need up to 5 females to satisfy his reproductive instinct.

Only healthy, sexually mature, well-fed individuals can participate in the breeding of eublephars.

Creating suitable conditions for reproduction

Before the breeding season, it is advisable for geckos to rest and regain their strength during hibernation. This is what happens in nature: after hibernation, the animals' reproductive instinct awakens. After hibernation, males become active suitors, and females become more friendly. Lizards with new strength gain nutrients by eating well, preparing for fertilization, pregnancy, and egg laying. At this time, it is worth taking care of the device in which they will be incubated.

DIY incubator

It is impossible to incubate eublepharid eggs without additional equipment. In order for the babies to hatch successfully, it is necessary to maintain a certain level of humidity and temperature. Even the sex of the future lizards depends on the temperature.

If it is not possible to purchase a special incubator in a store, you can build the device yourself. To do this, you will need the following components:

  • a large transparent container with a lid, with a volume of 30-40 liters;
  • an aquarium heating element with a thermostat;
  • fine-mesh stainless steel mesh or a tray for cutlery;
  • small plastic containers in which the eggs will be kept.
  • thermometer with suction cups;
  • a drill and a set of plastic clamps.

Fill a large container with water to 1/3 of its capacity. Then make holes in the upper part of the container and use them to attach a tray inside the container. If you are using a fine-mesh net, glue mini-shelves to the walls of the container and place the net on them. It will serve as a stand for small containers in which the eggs will lie. Such stands should be 1-2 cm above the main water level. Make holes for aeration in the lid of the future incubator.

Set the desired temperature and attach the thermometer above the water level. After 6 hours, check the thermometer readings against the heating device. If they differ, then Set the desired temperature and attach the thermometer above the water level. After 6 hours, check the thermometer readings against the heating device. If they differ, adjust the heating level until the desired readings are achieved.

Place vermiculite, perlite, and coconut fiber 3-5 cm deep in small containers that will hold the clutch. Also, make holes in the lids. It is important to monitor the condensation inside the incubator. Any water will ruin the gecko eggs.

Professional equipment is of higher quality and more reliable.

Feeding features

The basis for successfully breeding leopard geckos is a balanced diet. Their diet should consist mainly of insects and vitamins. The crickets that will be used as food must be enriched with vitamins and proteins. To do this, they are fed minced meat the day before they are eaten by the lizards.

Carrying and laying eggs requires a lot of effort and energy, so it is essential that the female's diet includes calcium supplements and vitamin D3. One-day-old mice, given a couple of times a month, will also be beneficial for them. However, do not overdo it with protein-rich food. It can lead to obesity and reduced fertility.

Attention! During the breeding season, eublephars often refuse to eat. Don't worry about this — it's normal behavior during this period.

Bringing the pair together

Keeping reptiles of different sexes in separate terrariums for geckos is an excellent incentive for successful mating. Therefore, it is better to keep reptiles in different tanks during the winter. The male should be kept in the enclosure where mating will take place.

The female is placed with the male for 7-10 days. If she is ready to mate, the mating process occurs immediately. If she is not ready, the female may start biting her partner and a fight will break out between the pair. In this case, it is better to separate the reptiles for a while. After a couple of weeks, the attempt can be repeated.

If the male is overly temperamental, you can try to pair them in the female's territory. There, the black eublephar or gecko of other species will feel insecure and behave more modestly. In this case, there is a chance that the copulation process will be successful.

Usually, the female is placed with the male during the breeding season of eublephars for about a week.

Courtship process

When the female appears in her dwelling for mating, the male begins to vibrate his tail. At this time, a crackling sound can be heard. Sensing the female nearby, the male begins to gently nibble the tip of his partner's tail, gradually moving these “kisses” from the tail to the back and neck.

If the female is ready for mating and accepts his advances, she stands still with her tail raised. At this moment, holding the skin of her neck in his mouth, the male copulates. The act lasts 2-3 minutes. If the female is not ready, she moves away. For probable fertilization, it is better to mate geckos several times during the mating season.

Pregnancy

After successful fertilization, eggs begin to grow in pairs in the female's abdomen. They can be seen through the lizard's translucent skin. The first pair of eggs usually takes a long time to grow (3-6 weeks). The rest mature every two weeks. During a single mating, all the eggs that the female is to lay during the season (2-9 pairs) are fertilized.

During pregnancy, it is important for the expectant mother to get plenty of rest and eat a proper diet, supplementing her intake with calcium-containing vitamins. By the end of pregnancy, the female's abdomen becomes voluminous and drops downwards, her appetite disappears, and she hides in shelters more often.

During pregnancy, females begin to eat more and consume calcium.

Egg laying

After fertilization, it takes 3-4 weeks for the eggs to be ready to hatch. Two days before laying, the lizard looks for a suitable place to lay them: she digs into the moss and substrate in the humid chamber, crawls around the terrarium, and tidies up. It is important to make sure that the moss does not dry out, because the female will bury her eggs in it.

The process of laying eggs most often occurs during the dark hours of the day – at night or at dawn. The female buries the clutch and does not leave it for some time. At first, the eggs are sticky and wet, then they dry out and may stick to each other or to the substrate.

During the mating season, the female lays 4-6 clutches. In order not to ruin the lizard's health and not to get a sick brood, it is best not to allow her to lay more than 4 clutches. To do this, reduce the daylight hours and lower the temperature in the terrarium.

Otherwise, the reptile's body becomes depleted, and the quality of the offspring declines significantly.

Most often, the female lays eggs at night or early in the morning.

Incubating eggs

Unfertilized eggs (fat eggs) are often found in the clutch, so before incubation begins, the eggs are examined for the presence of an eublephar embryo. To do this, strictly in the position in which they are after laying, it is necessary to shine a flashlight from below. A fertilized egg will have a pink spot (embryo) and brownish-red streaks. Unfertilized eggs are usually completely yellow-green in color when held up to the light.

The embryo attaches to the egg wall quickly, so under no circumstances should the eggs be turned over, otherwise the future lizard will drown. Mark the top of the egg with a marker and carefully transfer it to a small container with substrate prepared in advance, having made a hole in it beforehand. The filler should not cover more than half of the eggs.

Attention! The container with the future offspring is placed in an incubator, marked with the date of laying with a marker.

Be sure to monitor the temperature and humidity, add water to the substrate weekly, and do not touch the eggs under any circumstances. The incubation temperature depends on the sex of the individuals you want to obtain:

  • from 29.5 to 32.5 degrees for 40-55 days, “boys” will be born;
  • from 26 to 28.5 degrees for 55-70 days, “girls” will hatch;
  • at 28.5-29.5 degrees, both female and male individuals are likely to be produced.

Significant deviations in temperature from the norm (below 25 and above 35) will destroy the embryo.

As the embryo grows, so does the egg. Gradually, its color changes from white to pink, and just before hatching, sweat appears on the shell. Then the hatchlings peck through the shell with their beaks and come into the world.

Incubation of eggs is the most critical moment in breeding eublephars.

Reasons why eublephar do not reproduce

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

Often, novice breeders' first attempts to breed their pets are unsuccessful. There are several reasons why lizards do not reproduce.

Ovulation cycles

One of the main reasons for failure in breeding eublepharids is the absence of ovulation in females. Until the ovulation process begins, the lizard will not be able to become pregnant. A non-ovulating female will not allow her partner to approach her, and attempts to mate will end, at best, with them going their separate ways.

Female eublephars reach sexual maturity at 8-12 months with the onset of the ovulation cycle, which corresponds to the seasonal breeding periods of eublephars from January to July.

To determine whether a lizard is ovulating, you need to examine its abdomen. If the process is underway, you will see a pink dot, which indicates that an egg has formed in the female's body and is ready for fertilization. After successful mating, it descends to the lower right or left side of the abdomen, where it develops into a full-fledged egg.

A female eublepharid can lay 80-100 eggs in her lifetime.

Male problems

There are situations when males are not ready to mate with a partner, even if they are left alone during her ovulation period. There is no scientific explanation for this; the reptile simply does not want to be sexually active. It is better to wait and try again later.

A male interested in mating can be recognized by his tail, which shakes like a rattlesnake's. If this does not happen, then he will not mate.

Health problems

Even a female that is ovulating may have health problems and will reject the male's advances during mating. The natural instinct for self-preservation protects the lizard from reproduction if it is not ready. For example, if she is not well-fed, has not gained the necessary weight, or has not fully reached reproductive age. If a lizard in poor health is left alone with an aggressive male, there is a high risk of losing the animal. Therefore, if she is not ready and refuses to copulate, it is better to separate the pair.

Incorrect timing of mating

In natural conditions, the mating season for eublephars begins in January and ends in June. The peak of reproduction occurs in February-March. If a pair is placed together outside of this period, the probability of mating is almost zero.

The females of many reptiles are capable of reproducing until the end of their lives. However, the sexual activity of eublephars begins to decline after 5 years, and by 9 years of age, females become completely infertile. Therefore, the older the individual, the less likely it is to be successfully fertilized.

If the breeder chooses the wrong time for mating, the pair will behave aggressively towards each other. Either the copulation will last a long time, and the female, tired, may leave her partner. She will also not let him near her if fertilized eggs are already developing inside her.

The breeding season of eublephars is preceded by hibernation.

Breeding eublephars is an exciting but responsible step. It is important to remember that these are living creatures, not just a project. Before you think about breeding, make sure you are ready to provide everything necessary not only for the adults, but also for the potential babies.

As we have discovered, determining the sex is crucial. Without a clear understanding of which are male and which are female, the venture is doomed. Wait until they are 5-6 months old and carefully study the signs: the pores at the base of the tail in males and their absence in females are the most reliable indicator.

If you have made up your mind, prepare thoroughly. Study the issues of egg incubation, create separate terrariums for the young, and think about where you will place the offspring. The main thing is to act consciously, putting the well-being of your pets first. Then this experience will bring you only joy.
