This inconspicuous inhabitant of water bodies has an amazing ability: it adapts easily and grows quickly. Just a few twigs can turn into a lush bush in a short time, becoming a shelter for small aquarium inhabitants and a beautiful backdrop for brighter plants.

Keeping it is not as difficult as it may seem. All you need is good light and nutritious soil for the miniature mounds of Micranthemum to delight the eye with their delicate greenery. This plant is your chance to create a piece of a magical underwater meadow filled with life and grace in your aquarium.

Micranthemum micranthemoides is a small but very impressive plant that has long been loved by aquascaping enthusiasts. It grows easily, reproduces quickly, and forms dense, bright green “carpets” that resemble living moss. It is suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists because it is unpretentious: it thrives in different lighting conditions and does not require complex care. Under the right conditions, it transforms the aquarium into a real underwater landscape, as if strewn with emerald hills.

Micranthemum is native to North America. The plant was often found in shallow waters on the east coast.

Despite its widespread use in aquariums, it is on the verge of extinction in its natural habitat.

Growing and care

Hemanthus is considered one of the most adaptable aquarium plants. Even novice aquarists can grow this plant. Of course, it will look better under intense lighting and in soft water, but it also thrives in more modest conditions.

General care recommendations:

  • Micranthemum can be grown in tanks of any size.
  • There are several options for placement. In large herbariums, it is possible to grow Hemanthus to a large size and use it in the background. With standard sizes, it is advisable to place it in the center. If placed in the foreground, the plant should be trimmed regularly. Takashi Amano has a composition consisting exclusively of stones and Micranthemum with small patches of Marsilia in the foreground.
  • The plant is a valuable specimen for nano aquariums.
  • Thanks to its lateral shoots, Micranthemum grows rapidly. Planted in groups of 10-15 branches, it forms lush, spherical emerald colonies. This property is highly valued by aquascapers.
  • Since the root system is poorly developed, this plant does not require deep immersion in the soil. Therefore, it takes root quickly.
  • The more often it is trimmed, the more intensively the hemianthus branches. Unlike other plants, the lower part of its stem does not become bare.
  • If you need to replace a ground cover plant in your aquarium, Micranthemum is a worthy alternative. In addition, it requires minimal care.
  • It can be grown in a paludarium.
  • Hemanthus thickets serve as an excellent natural shelter for fish during the spawning season.
  • Neighborhood with barbs, snails, and cichlids is undesirable.
  • It reacts negatively to the appearance of algae in the aquarium.
  • Under proper conditions, it grows up to 10 cm in 1 month.

Like other long-stemmed plants, Micranthemoides is a natural biofilter.

Optimal water parameters

The plant prefers to grow in clean water, so it is necessary to replace 1/5 of the total volume of water weekly.

Recommended hydrochemical parameters:

  • temperature — 20-28°C;
  • pH — 5.8-7.3;
  • total hardness — 0-30°dGH;
  • carbonate hardness — 0-7°kH.

The presence of mechanical suspension in the aquatic environment negatively affects the decorative qualities of the plant.

Lighting requirements

Despite its undemanding nature, Micranthemoides needs good lighting.

Compared to Anubias, which can thrive in natural indoor light, Hemanthus is more capricious. The plant needs bright light.

Artificial lighting can be provided using fluorescent lamps with a power of 0.7 W/l.

In good lighting conditions, it actively releases oxygen and improves the hydrochemical parameters of the aquatic environment.

In dim light, the stems stretch upward and form “skinny” bushes.

Soil quality

It grows well in medium-sized river sand. Considering its poorly developed root system, the tenacity of its roots is striking. The plant is able to take root even in coarse soil or even attach itself to driftwood.

Need for feeding

Micranthemum needs fertilizers containing nitrates. An additional supply of carbon dioxide stimulates growth and gives the leaves a bright emerald hue.

Features of reproduction

The method of propagation is vegetative, by pinching the main stem or using root shoots. It is enough to pinch off a cutting and plant it in the ground. Under good conditions, the “babies” take root easily.

Micranthemum micranthemoides is a truly special plant that can turn an ordinary aquarium into a picturesque underwater landscape. Its delicate greenery and ability to form lush mounds make it a favorite of both beginners and experienced aquascapers. With it, your underwater world will always look well-groomed and full of life.

Caring for this plant does not require much effort, which is a big advantage. Regular trimming makes it easy to control the shape of the thickets and stimulates the growth of new shoots. With good lighting and sufficient nutrients, it responds with rapid growth and lush color.

As a result, when you choose Micranthemum micranthemoides, you get not just a plant, but a versatile tool for creativity. It helps to create volume, play with perspective, and fill the aquarium with natural harmony. Let this “pearl” become the centerpiece of your own underwater composition.
