However, behind its striking appearance lies the character of a true Malawi fish. It is a territorial and rather aggressive fish, especially during the spawning season. It is best kept by experienced aquarists who understand the habits of cichlids and can create suitable conditions.

Johani need a spacious aquarium with plenty of rock shelters that mimic their natural rocky environment. With the right approach and careful selection of tank mates, they will delight you for a long time with their activity and incredible beauty, turning your aquarium into a piece of an African lake.

Melanochromis johani is a bright and active Malawi cichlid, loved by aquarists for its rich coloration and interesting behavior. This medium-sized fish is distinguished by alternating black and blue stripes, especially in males. It lives in hard alkaline water, such as Lake Malawi, and feels best in a spacious aquarium with rocks and shelters. It has a pronounced territorial nature, especially during breeding, so it is important to choose suitable neighbors and avoid overcrowding. With proper care, it grows well, reproduces, and is a delight to look at.

Habitat

They originate from Lake Malawi in Africa and live locally in the eastern part of the lake near the settlement of Masinje and Cape Ngombo in the territory of the modern state of Malawi. They prefer to stay close to piles of small and medium-sized rocks that extend into the water to a depth of 5 meters. In the wild, they feed on tough fibrous algae that grow on rocks and small bottom-dwelling invertebrates that live in these algae.

They have an elongated body with a rounded head and a long dorsal fin stretching from head to tail. Their coloration depends on their sex. Males are light blue with rows of parallel dark stripes. Their anal fin has light spots resembling eggs in size and color. Females and juveniles are golden-orange in color with barely noticeable stripes on their bodies. Due to their similar coloration, males are often mistaken for their close relative, the Mainano.

Feeding

Homestyler WWSunsky-online WW

It belongs to the omnivorous species of cichlids. Despite being omnivorous, its diet should be varied; feeding it the same type of food is not acceptable. In a home aquarium, you can feed live or frozen food (artemia, daphnia, bloodworms) in combination with dry food (flakes, granules, etc.) and plant supplements. It is not recommended to feed animal products such as beef heart or liver, although many publications state the opposite. Mammalian meat is not part of their natural diet and can cause digestive problems and trigger Malawi bloat disease. Feed 2-3 times a day with an amount that will be eaten within 5 minutes.

Contents and care

Melanochromis johani requires high-quality and stable water composition. At the same time, it is not particularly clean, so the water will need to be changed weekly, replacing 20% to 50% depending on the size of the tank and the number of inhabitants. For example, for 3-4 fish and a 150-liter aquarium, the volume of water to be replaced is 20%.

The water composition should replicate the natural conditions of Lake Malawi — slightly alkaline water of medium hardness, a small concentration of salt (2 g per 1 liter) is acceptable. For more information on the composition and methods of changing pH and dH parameters, see the section “Hydrochemical composition of water.”

A filtration system is designed to help maintain water purity, so purchase the most efficient filter you can afford. It will also provide the necessary internal circulation. High-quality water aeration is also important, given the absence of plants in the aquarium. Provide several spray stones that create many small air bubbles. Other necessary equipment includes a heater and a lighting system.

The design should reproduce the natural habitat. The substrate should consist of coarse sand with large rocks and stones piled up to the surface. Shelters are essential, and various crevices and grottos serve this purpose. Plants are not necessary.

Behavior

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

Relatively tolerant of other cichlids. Aggressive behavior is observed between males and fish of similar coloration, especially Meingano. It is recommended to keep one male and 3-4 females, provided that there is a reliable shelter in the rocks for each of them. It is possible to keep a male and female pair, but in this case, the level of aggression will be too high, and unwanted skirmishes may occur in the presence of other neighbors. Other non-aggressive cichlids from Lake Malawi can be used as neighbors, for example, Hummingbird Cichlid, Cichla ocellaris, Lombardi, Lemon Cichlid, and others.

Breeding / Reproduction

This is a polygamous species, with one male and several females forming a permanent family. Under favorable conditions, spawning can begin at any time. The main sign of the approaching mating season is an increase in the intensity of the male's coloration. It can be said that it becomes twice as bright.

Females lay 10 to 60 eggs on the ground and then immediately hide them in their mouths — this is an evolutionary way to protect their offspring. However, the eggs remain unfertilized, and there is an interesting way to change that. The pattern on the male's anal fin resembles eggs, which the female mistakenly perceives as her own and tries to swallow with her mouth. At this moment, the male releases milt, which is inhaled by the female, and fertilization occurs. The incubation period is 14 to 21 days, during which time the eggs remain in the female's mouth. After hatching, she will guard her offspring for several more days, and in case of danger, the young will hide in the female's mouth. The young can eat finely ground dry food and Artemia nauplii, which are their larval stage.

We have reviewed the main features of the Johan's melanochromis, this bright and energetic cichlid from Malawi. It becomes clear that this fish is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for active and memorable pets with character. Its contrasting colors and lively behavior fill the aquarium with movement and life around the clock.

However, not everyone should keep this species. Its territorial and unsociable nature requires experience, a spacious aquarium, and carefully selected neighbors, ideally other Malawi cichlids. This is not a fish that you can put in a community aquarium and forget about. Caring for it is more of an interesting challenge than a simple duty.

If you are ready to provide Melanochromis johani with space, proper nutrition, and a suitable environment, it will bring you joy for many years. This fish will truly blossom in the hands of an attentive and responsible owner, becoming the center of attention and pride of your home underwater world.
