Beagle

One of the most popular dog breeds, beagles are renowned for their playful and amiable dispositions. They always seem to win people over with their endearing floppy ears and lively eyes. Because they were primarily bred for hunting, beagles have an acute sense of smell and an insatiable curiosity about the world.

These dogs love company and are very social animals. Beagles are always up for fun, whether it’s playing with children, taking part in family activities, or meeting new people at the dog park. They add a great deal of interest to any home because of their lively and inquisitive personalities.

It can be a rewarding and challenging experience to train a beagle. Despite their intelligence, they frequently follow their noses rather than orders due to their independent nature. For this reason, early socialization and regular training are essential. Beagles can grow up to be well-mannered, inquisitive companions given the correct training.

A beagle could be the best companion for you if you’re searching for someone dependable and actively seeking new experiences. They’ll make every day an exciting journey with their charm and energy, keeping you happy and on your toes.

History of the origin of the species

Although the exact origin of the beagle remains unknown, one thing is certain: the selective breeding of these dogs for hunting began in England at the time the aristocracy was founded. According to one account, the Greeks and Romans owned hunting dogs resembling beagles. Julius Pollux, the author of the ancient Greek text "Onomasticon," made reference to this. Subsequently, the British Isles received them from the Celtic tribes, and English breeders started producing the modern-day beagle.

A collection of these tiny animals can fit easily into a special basket that is fastened to the side of a horse, and their small size makes it possible to carry them even in a hunting pocket.

The noble appearance and excellent hunting qualities immediately liked the aristocratic layer of society, this was the reason for the mass breeding and strengthening of this breed in England. The first entry about this dates back to 1475. Bigl gained wider propagation in the 16-17th century, when people could afford such a pet. This positively affected the development of the breed: the dogs became not only a tool of hunters, but also the decorative pride of the court. It was prestigious to possess a dog with an interesting unusual coloring. During this period, or rather in 1650, the English writer Bloom in his book described these dogs as the most miniature of all that are used in hares hunting. The second half of the 19th century was a period of decline in the popularity of this dog, but ardent lovers of hare hunting and admirers of the breed did not allow it to disappear completely, moreover, they revived it and raised it to a new level. Beagles began to participate in exhibitions, hunting trips. During this period, the first official club of beagle lovers was opened. In our time, the breed has retained its popularity. In England, with their help, as in the old days, they look for hare holes, and in other countries, these dogs have become excellent companions and even assistants to customs officers. Thanks to their keen sense of smell, they can smell the presence of prohibited items.

Characteristics and behavior

Advantages

  1. Beagles are very inquisitive, cheerful. They like to explore every corner of the house and yard, show genuine interest in everything new and exciting. They will stick their wet nose into everything that happens around them, which is why they cause affection and amusement to their owners.
  2. This dog is very sociable, sociable, friendly. Gets along well with other animals and becomes a loyal friend for children. As a rule, he enjoys participating in all active outdoor games, brings sticks, balls, plays tag. Not aggressive, strongly expressed loyalty and affection for the owner, does not show dominant qualities, but on the contrary is inclined to submission to both adults and for kids.
  3. Dogs are active and mobile. Moreover, long games in the fresh air are extremely necessary for these dogs. Having a beagle will be an ideal option for athletes and restless people. This little friend will support any walk, you can take him with you on jogs, playing sports in nature, and a strong body with well-developed muscles gives the dog endurance and will allow him not to get tired for a long time.

Disadvantages

The following traits are among the breed’s drawbacks:

  1. Slightly awkward rectilinear movements;
  2. The animal"s tendency to excessive food consumption;
  3. Insolence and difficulty in training;
  4. Small weak teeth;
  5. A drooping or, conversely, sharply pulled-in belly;
  6. Timidity of character, inability to defend.

Care and maintenance

It is recommended to use a soft brush to clean the dog’s teeth once a week and to use a cotton swab soaked in special antimicrobial agents to wipe the dog’s eyes and ears. It’s important to start a puppy’s hygiene regimen early in life.

Nutrition

The extreme gluttony of this breed of dog is a moment well worth observing. In this instance, nature has essentially disregarded the functions of the body’s saturation center. It’s crucial to establish and adhere to the animal’s regimen and diet. The dog needs to consume a specific amount of food in the following amounts each day:

  • 65% – the basis of the diet is meat products and offal;
  • 25% – porridge (oatmeal, buckwheat, rice, wheat);
  • 10% – boiled vegetables.

You can give the beagle boiled sea fish a few times a week, but make sure to take out the bones.

Milk, Ryazhenka, and cottage cheese are examples of dairy products that are beneficial to the body. However, this type of feeding will only be beneficial if the animal does not have dyspepsia.

You can estimate how much food the animal ate based on its age, weight, and level of activity.

  • For puppies up to three months it is worth preparing about 300-350 grams of food per day, dividing it into 5-6 meals.
  • Similarly, for the age of three to four months 350-450 grams for 4 meals.
  • For a 5-8 month-old puppy, food weighing up to one kilogram is divided into three portions.
  • Upon reaching eight months about a kilogram of food should be divided into breakfast and dinner.

Since these computations are imprecise, you should consider the dog’s physical health: if it starts putting on weight, it would be wise to decrease the portion by 10% to 15%.

With good reason, dry prepared food is acknowledged as a respectable substitute for homemade food. It is worthwhile to consider ultra-premium cuisine. Its ratio of microelements and nutrients is precisely calculated. A ready-made line for a specific breed is produced by certain food manufacturing companies; for convenience, the weight of food for each age group is indicated.

Health

Raising a beautiful, robust beagle dog with exceptional health and endurance is entirely possible with the right care. In order to preserve a state, it is important to follow all required procedures.

Vaccinations

It is imperative to assess the health of a puppy or adult dog and rule out any serious illnesses before administering vaccinations. It is worthwhile to wait until the animal has fully recovered before administering the vaccination if there are any concerns with their overall health. It is necessary to take a body temperature a few days before the event. If there is an exception to the rule, it is also worthwhile to defer vaccination until the underlying causes are identified and resolved.

It is also not acceptable to induce female estrus in dogs during their teething process. In general, everything that the body can weaken: moving, stresses and the like should take place as much later or earlier than vaccination.

You can feed the animal specific additives and vitamins containing vitamin C to help maintain its immune system. Moreover, two weeks prior to the immunization procedure, anthelmintic measures must be taken.

The first vaccination should be given to your pet between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks, and the second vaccination should be given three weeks later to further strengthen their health. A puppy that is younger than a year old needs three vaccinations. It will be shielded from the following illnesses by this procedure:

One injection of the rabies vaccine is required. Re-vaccination: following a year. After that, the animal must receive a yearly vaccination.

The vaccination process is typically painless and without complications. Indigestion is occasionally possible; if it lasts only a short while, you shouldn’t be concerned. If the excruciating condition persists, you should visit the veterinarian for a checkup. Seldom seen symptoms include convulsions, excessive salivation, allergies, lethargy, and refusal to eat. When the dog exhibits such symptoms, you must take it to the vet right away.

The dog should spend approximately three weeks in quarantine before and two weeks after receiving his second vaccination and revaccination. For a period of five weeks, the owners must abide by the following requirements in total:

  • minimize the beagle"s contact with the outside world and other animals, hide outdoor shoes and clothes in the closet – such things can be dangerous for the baby"s body;
  • do not allow the animal to pick up various objects and products from the ground – they can also carry infections and contagion;
  • wash your hands before contact with the pet;
  • do not bathe your little friend during the quarantine period;
  • do not change the feeding system and type of food;
  • make sure that the dog does not overwork.

By carefully adhering to these guidelines, vaccination-related side effects can be reduced or completely avoided.

Diseases

Regretfully, the beagle breed is prone to certain physiological traits that cause these illnesses:

An early diagnosis will either totally eradicate the illness or greatly lessen its signs and symptoms.

Walking

Such an animal requires active games and lengthy walks, as was previously mentioned.

  • Do not forget that a hound breed dog deprived of such care will begin to entertain itself, which can affect the appearance of the home and the surrounding area. And also, the beagle needs mobility to avoid one of the problems of the breed – obesity.
  • Thus, walking it 2-3 times a day for a total duration of 2 hours, you can provide the animal with the necessary mobility. Extending walks for a longer period will only have a positive effect on the mood and health of the pet.

Grooming

This dog’s hygiene doesn’t call for a lot of effort or a unique method. Bathing it once every six months or as needed is sufficient. Additionally, keep in mind that:

  1. You should not dry the coat with a hair dryer, this can slightly spoil the appearance of the pet.
  2. For combing, use a furminator brush made of natural materials or a mitten. This point is important to observe, since this breed is subject to prolonged intensive shedding in the spring-summer period.
  3. It is advisable to increase the frequency of combing during this period to a daily procedure lasting from 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. During the normal period, such an event should be carried out at least once a week.
  5. To improve the general condition of the coat and strengthen it, you can buy a special balm after bathing and vitamin complexes, which the modern market offers in abundance.

Mating

At seven or ten months old, the female beagle’s owners ought to be prepared for puberty. A swollen genital loop and bloody discharge will be signs of this. However, a dog is only ready to conceive when it is fully mature, which is around one and a half to two years of age. The duration of the estrus is 19–23 days, occurring 3-6 months apart.

It is important to choose a mating pair carefully; seek guidance from the breeder. He will advise you on how to select a healthy, "correct" dog based on the qualities. It is important to remember that successful mating depends on at least one partner having experience.

  • Having made a choice, it is worth creating conditions for acquaintance. It is best to do this on neutral territory, in a park, on a playground. But the place should not be too crowded and noisy. The dogs should sniff each other and accept.
  • In case of a positive result, you can set a date for mating. It should fall on the period that lasts a week after 10-15 days of estrus. The place of the meeting is not of particular importance, you can conduct mating both on the girl"s territory and on the boy"s territory. The main thing is that the meeting takes place in the morning and no one interferes with them. The procedure should be repeated in about a day.
  • Pregnancy is sometimes difficult, there is a possibility of the birth of weak and premature puppies. Usually beagles become parents of 5-6 puppies.

Key points in training

These beauties are appropriately referred to as "cute impudent creatures," which perfectly captures their attitude toward training. However, they also possess a hint of cunning. For instance, you can permanently give the puppy the desire to sleep in the bed by caving in to his weakness and letting him doze off there. They will effortlessly gain the owner’s bed with their charm, and any attempts to eject him will fail.

The most important thing is to learn how to properly, but non-aggressively, teach the animal respect and obedience. It is true that a dog with such intelligence can be trained commands.

It’s crucial to set up a general training course (OKD) and early socialization for the beagle early on.

  • Read about how to properly train a dog in the article:“Puppy training: effective methods from dog handlers, teaching commands at home”.

How to choose a puppy

  1. If you decide to get a companion dog, then you should trust the call of your heart. But in the case of choosing a dog for exhibitions or hunting, you should approach the issue seriously.
  2. The main criteria for selecting a beagle will be the reputation of the breeder, the pedigree of the parents. And also the presence/absence of deviations from generally accepted standards in the puppy (strong limbs, correct bite, well-groomed beautiful fur, correctly developed reproductive organs).
  3. A healthy puppy will be active and playful, have an excellent appetite and meet all the characteristics of the breed. It is important to take into account the color feature of the babies – within 12 weeks they can change slightly in color, for example, become lighter.
