9 months Puppies enter adolescence, growing rapidly. Training and socialization are important during this stage.
12 months By now, they are almost fully grown, with a strong build and a loyal, protective nature. Still playful, but more mature.

Development by month

In the photo of a puppy and an adult representative of the "traditional" Japanese Akita Inu, the red color with a white chest, muzzle and inner surface of the paws is distinguished. American standards allow the birth of puppies of all possible colors, including completely snow-white and dogs with a black "mask" on the muzzle.

Newborns

Children’s hair can be long or short. However, the latter choice is regarded as a flaw and will prevent the dog from pursuing a career in shows. The muscles at the base of the organs still need to strengthen in order for the ears to stand upright. The dog’s voracious chewing of solid food speeds up this process.

A newborn Akita Inu’s tail is straight and its eyes and ears are still closed. It will eventually curl into a ring as it ages. Due to their closed pads, or "membranes," the paws of this Japanese breed are already large at birth; they are natural swimmers.

At birth, a puppy weighs between 350 and 500 grams. The parameter is influenced by heredity, litter size, and sex.

All dogs develop at their fastest rate during the first month of their lives.

Day of life Features development
1-10 Puppies do not hear or see anything, but they learn to respond to the environment – touch, temperature, food, the presence of the mother. The development is very fast: already on the second day they are well-fed "lumps", and by the end of the first week the weight of the puppies doubles.
11-20 The babies begin to hear, their eyes open, the first teeth are formed. The puppies are already striving to meet the world – crawl out of the box, learn to walk.
21-30 Little Akita Inu gradually become independent from their mother. For their full development, soft complementary feeding is already needed.

The owner switches the pups to special puppy food by the end of the first month. The dog’s weight and height are taken into consideration when choosing the feeding rate. At one month old, an Akita Inu weighs approximately 3–4 kg.

The puppy and the mother dog are totally independent of one another. Active and amiable, he plays with people and gets acclimated to having other animals in the house. He also learns how to interact with them. The dog already requires a rigorous feeding schedule; meals are given to them for a maximum of 15 minutes, after which the bowl is taken away.

The puppies’ weight doubles to 5–10 kg, and their ears slightly lift. At the withers, the baby is 35–40 cm tall.

The start of the animal’s character formation: Akita must receive instruction and training. A three-month-old baby can already respond to its name and understand basic commands like "come" and "no." The animal weighs between 10 and 14 kg and grows by 2 to 3 cm.

5 months

An Akita Inu that is five months old is already a teenager. He is actively developing and strengthening his skeleton and muscle tissue. It’s crucial to set aside time for walks that involve activity, such as jogging, playing with a ball, a bone, or other animals, swimming, or playground training. Also, the feeding schedule is adhered to scrupulously. The dog needs to relax after eating in order to prevent digestive issues. At the withers, her height is 50–55 cm, and her weight is 23–25 kg.

Akita Inu loses its funny puppy roundness – in body proportions, external characteristics resembles an adult dog. A fully grown puppy typically stands 55–60 cm tall and weighs 25–28 kg.

The animal’s physical growth slows down; by the time it is nine months old, a dog’s withers measure between sixty and sixty-five centimeters. It gains weight by 7–10 kg, or up to 37 kg.

This is the time when habits form and the animal’s personality emerges. Re-educating an elderly Akita Inu and getting it acclimated to something drastically different is extremely challenging.

10-12 months

Physical growth slows down: the dog reaches its maximum height of 65–70 cm and its maximum weight of 37–40 kg. The Akita Inu’s head and body proportions have changed noticeably at this point in time. When puberty arrives, females start their first period. But mating doesn’t occur until the animal reaches adulthood.

The development of Akita Inus continues for three years. The animal puts on weight, but it does so as a result of muscle growth and chest enlargement.
