Your kitten is five months old, energetic, curious, and growing quickly. It’s a fascinating time in their development, and a lot of what they eat now will affect how healthy they are later on.
With so many options available, selecting the best food for your kitten can occasionally feel overwhelming. You want to make sure they savor their food and receive all the nutrients they require.
This post will explain what foods, portion sizes, and how to introduce new foods to your five-month-old kitten are all important to know.
| Food Type | Examples |
| Wet Food | Chicken, turkey, or salmon-based kitten food |
| Dry Food | High-quality kitten kibble with balanced nutrients |
| Homemade Food | Cooked chicken or fish, plain rice, and small amounts of vegetables |
| Treats | Small amounts of kitten-specific treats or soft snacks |
| Water | Always provide fresh, clean water |
Types of food

At five months of age, a kitten’s digestive system is fully developed and capable of breaking down both soft and hard food. This enables the menu to be expanded for the pet and add new, healthful items to the diet. The animal’s feeding plan needs to be decided upon right away. The health of the kitten is adversely affected when switching to a new food type.
Feeding methods:
- Natural food products. This type of diet is preferable because it is as natural and organic as possible for animals. Disadvantages of the diet – the need to prepare food for the pet every day, mandatory intake of vitamin and mineral complexes.
- Industrial food – owners most often give preference to it. Ready-made dry and wet food is convenient to use, since it can be in a bowl for several days without losing its benefits and taste. The composition of ready-made feeds includes vitamins and other useful substances necessary for the normal development of a kitten. Disadvantage – good, high-quality food is not cheap.
- Combined diet. This is a combination of industrial diets and "natural". This type of feeding is not approved by veterinarians, since it carries the risk of negative impact on the kitten"s body. The combination of natural products and industrial feeds can lead to hypervitaminosis.
For kittens, the only permitted product combination is to alternate feedings of dry food and wet canned food.
Rules and recommendations for choosing food
The question of how to properly feed a kitten plagues a lot of pet owners. In addition to being delicious, my goal is to plan a diet that is as healthful as possible. By heeding the advice of experts, you can make the best decision:

- The diet of a pet at the age of 5 months should be balanced and nutritious, regardless of the financial capabilities of the owner. It should be understood – if expensive dry food was initially chosen for a kitten, transferring it in the future to budget categories, and therefore of lower quality, can lead to a number of health problems.
- When choosing industrial feed, you need to focus not only on its price, but also on its quality. There are no good and healthy cheap feeds. If it is not possible to buy an expensive product, it is better to feed your pet natural food.
- Natural food should only be used if the pet"s owner has enough time to prepare food. If the owner is often absent from home for a long time, it is better to feed the kitten with industrial dry food, you can leave it with a reserve, without worrying that the baby will remain hungry.
You should take the cat’s breed into account when selecting the type of feeding. Since many purebred cats have a higher risk of developing digestive or urinary system disorders, these kittens need specific food or, if fed "natural" food, should avoid certain products.
At five months old, kittens require a balanced diet that includes premium cat food that is high in fats, proteins, and other vital nutrients to support their rapid growth. It’s crucial to give them a combination of wet and dry food at this age to make sure they get enough nutrition and hydration. They won’t benefit from eating adult cat food, so stay away from giving it to them. In order to create a healthy routine, fresh water should always be available. It’s also a good idea to introduce regular feeding times.
Ready-made food
The industrial diet is more beneficial for kittens under five months old. Dry granules are composed of minerals and vitamins. Not only do nutrients support the kitten’s healthy, complete development. They improve the immune system and digestive tract health, which lowers the risk of numerous illnesses. Veterinarians advise selecting food for kittens from the following categories:
- Holistic. This is the most expensive, but also the highest quality type of industrial food. The composition includes only natural products. There are no flavor enhancers, emulsifiers or other chemicals that can cause irreparable harm to the health of the pet.
- Super-premium – high-quality food, also containing natural ingredients. Additionally includes fruits and vegetables.
- Premium – inferior in price and quality to holistic. The composition contains substances useful for growing and developing babies, mineral components and vitamin sets. They are allowed to be used by kittens without fear for their health.
Prohibition on inferior goods.
It is strongly advised against choosing "economy" budget options like Kitekat, Whiskas, Friskas, etc.
Few beneficial ingredients can be found in them, but a lot of flavorings, emulsifiers, food additives, and flavor enhancers. Frequent consumption of such products by a pet has a detrimental effect on the state of the gastrointestinal tract and raises the risk of several illnesses.
The top five. Suggested ready-to-eat food for kittens aged five months:

- ProPlan Optistart Junior – belongs to the premium category. Contains useful and natural nutrients, has an affordable price. Not the best, but quite suitable for growing babies.
- Royal Canin – contains a high content of protein, vitamins and minerals. Used for feeding kittens aged 4-12 months.
- Orijen Cat& Kitten – universal industrial food. It can be given to both kittens and adults. Contains protein.
- JOSERA Kitten Minette – food that will provide the kitten with complete nutrition and development. Feature – the presence of a large amount of fiber. This substance improves the functioning of the digestive system. Especially recommended for long-haired purebred kittens. Fiber prevents the formation of hairballs in the gastrointestinal tract. Age range – 2-12 months.
- Hill’s Science Plan Kitten Chicken – the product is of fairly good quality with a vitamin and mineral composition. Distinctive feature – the granules are large, so they are ideal for adult toothy kittens.
The kitten’s diet cannot be restricted to just dry granules.
Foods that are semi-moist, canned, and jelly-like should be included in the diet. Choosing food in cans and granules from the same manufacturer is advised.
Natural food
Borscht, porridge, and stew are often associated with natural nutrition among cat owners. This is wholly incorrect. Feeding human food from the table to a kitten under 5 months of age or an adult cat afterwards is strictly prohibited. Some products that should be included in a natural diet are:
- Beef. This lean variety is considered the most useful for a kitten. The meat must be pre-frozen, for at least 3 days. Before serving it to the pet, it should be defrosted. Beef can be given boiled, but without salt or any spices. It must be cut, but not too finely. At 5 months, a kitten is able to chew large pieces.
- Chicken. Kittens can only be given fillet, exclusively boiled and without skin. Chicken is an allergenic product, so it is recommended to start with a small amount, monitoring the kitten"s reaction.
- Fermented milk products. Kittens should definitely be introduced to the menu of cottage cheese and sour cream, cream and fermented baked milk. Fat content of fermented milk products – no more than 10%. There should be no additives or sugar in fermented milk products.
- Vegetables and berries (except starchy ones). You shouldn"t give them to your pet too often, a couple of times every 7 days is enough. Allowed: apples, carrots, cabbage. All of them are grated, served raw, without salt and spices. It is allowed to season the grated vegetables with a couple of drops of oil, preferably olive.
- Cereals. Buckwheat, oatmeal are boiled in water or milk diluted in equal parts with water. Cereals should be cooked without salt and sugar. Boiled cereals are not a separate dish, they need to be mixed with meat.
Prohibited products
Babies’ menu items shouldn’t include:

- Fatty meats – duck, lamb, goose and pork. These varieties are poorly absorbed by the kitten"s digestive system, and put an excessive load on the liver. Regular feeding of a kitten with fatty meat can result in serious problems with digestive functions.
- Milk – cow"s milk is not digested by the kitten"s gastrointestinal tract. Very rarely, you can give goat"s milk, but it must be diluted with water.
- Salt, spices, sugar. No kitten will refuse well-peppered and salted meat and will even ask for more. But you can"t indulge your pet with such delicacies if you don"t want him to suffer from digestive diseases later.
- Legumes – cause fermentation, disrupt the digestive tract.
- Vegetables: eggplants, potatoes, tomatoes. They contain substances that have a toxic effect on the cat"s body.
Seafood items. A five-month-old kitten’s diet that includes fish is a contentious item. Representatives of the feline kingdom are not accustomed to eating such food because they do not find it in the wild.
If you feed a kitten fish, you should only do so once or twice a week and only with lean sea fish.
It is not permitted to feed river fish to a kitten.
Water
The kitten’s bowl needs to be filled with fresh water at all times. A pet may have up to 200 milliliters of liquid each day. Adhering to the drinking schedule is particularly crucial for kittens fed industrial dry food. Giving boiled, purified, or bottled water is advised. Many dangerous chemicals are present in tap water. Two changes of liquid are required each day.

Feeding regimen
Only when the owner is gone for an extended period of time is it permissible to leave dry granules in the bowl; otherwise, natural products cannot be used. Apart from this, you also need to get the kitten used to having a specific feeding schedule:
- After the satiated kitten moves away from the bowl, it should be put in the refrigerator.
- The frequency of feeding a kitten at 5 months is 4 times a day. Night feedings are not provided.
- It is prohibited to give any food between feedings.
- The volume of food per day is from 180 to 210 g, depending on the size of the kitten. Meat products should predominate in the diet.
Obesity development and several other complications are associated with overeating.
Watch this video as well about what to feed a five-month-old kitten:
Kittens, who are five months old, require the correct ratio of nutrients to support their rapid growth. To maintain their health and strength, provide them with plenty of fresh water and high-quality wet and dry food.
Meals high in protein are necessary to support their active lifestyle and help them gain muscle. You can also occasionally offer treats or tiny amounts of cooked meats, but stay away from foods like chocolate and onions that are bad for cats.
Their nutritional requirements will vary as they get bigger, so it’s critical to keep an eye on their weight and see your veterinarian if you have any questions. You can give your kitten the best start in life by feeding them correctly from the beginning.
