The snake inhabits various biotopes, but prefers humid tropical forests with dense tree vegetation and mangrove thickets. It is found in the rainforests of the Amazon and the savannas of Brazil.

This reptile leads a solitary lifestyle. It spends most of its time in trees, where it hunts birds and other jungle inhabitants. It can be active both during the day and at night.
The snake has special thermal sensors, which can be used to hunt warm-blooded animals in the dark. At the same time, the boa constrictor has excellent vision during the day. After hunting, it climbs to the high branches of trees and digests its food.

Important! In case of danger, it may bite, although the snake is not venomous. Bites are quite painful due to sharp teeth and subsequent inflammation. Before attacking, the boa constrictor wags its tail and assumes a fighting stance. If it is severely frightened, it releases a pungent liquid with a musky odor from special glands. The liquid is extremely caustic, so its smell is difficult to remove even with washing.
The garden boa is a small and calm snake that is often kept at home as a pet. It is not poisonous, easy to care for, and ideal for beginners. It lives in warm regions, likes to hide in grass or under leaves, and mainly hunts small rodents. When kept in captivity, it is important to provide it with a warm, dry home and proper nutrition. Surprisingly, these snakes can fall into a state of torpor when frightened, lying still as if dead to scare off predators. It is an intelligent and cunning creature that is capable of many things despite its modest size.
Appearance

The snake is medium-sized by boa constrictor standards. Its body length reaches 2.5 m, with an average size of 1.5-1.8 m. Boas have an elongated, compressed body that is relatively thin.
A distinctive feature is the color of its body, which varies significantly depending on the habitat and population. The main color can be yellow, bright orange, red, gray, greenish-brown, dark brown, black, lemon. At the same time, the body can be dotted with various patterns of dark or light spots and stripes of any shape and size.

Depending on their color, boas are divided into two groups: garden (predominantly gray, black, and green) and colored (predominantly yellow, red, and orange).

Sexual dimorphism is evident in body size. Females are noticeably larger than males.
Diet

In its natural habitat, its diet consists mainly of rodents, small mammals, birds, large insects, frogs, bats, lizards, and snakes. The boa constrictor is capable of swallowing prey 1.5 times the thickness of its body.
When hunting, it can lie in wait in trees or bushes. When its prey approaches, the snake makes a sharp lunge and sinks its teeth into its victim. If necessary, the boa constrictor wraps itself around its prey and tries to suffocate it. Then it slowly swallows it whole.

Note! The snake's reaction is not the best. Fast mammals can dodge an attack. Therefore, the snake prefers to sneak up on its prey or hunt at night. Because of this, its daytime diet can differ significantly from its nighttime diet.
Reproduction

Little is known about reproduction. The mating season occurs once a year and lasts from March to May. After mating, the female carries the fetus for 6-8 months. During this period, she actively feeds and often basks in the sun to accelerate the development of her young.
This is a viviparous species of snake. Up to 12 offspring with a body length of about 30 cm can be born at a time. From the first days, they lead an independent life, and the female does not participate in their lives.

The diet of small boas consists mainly of insects, larvae, and invertebrates. The first molt occurs after 10-14 days. Sexual maturity occurs at 3-4 years of age.

This is a large snake, so the terrarium must be appropriate for its size. Vertical or cubic terrariums with minimum dimensions of 80x50x80 cm are suitable, although it is better to choose a larger home.
An important parameter is the height of the terrarium, as this is a climbing species. For the same reason, there should be something like tree branches in the enclosure so that the snake can rest there. In addition, a box or cone should be placed in the corner where the snake can hide from prying eyes.

The following can be used as substrate any substrate for reptiles. The best options are wood shavings, coconut fiber, or leaves. The terrarium should maintain a stable temperature of 26-28°C during the day and 22-25°C at night. There should also be a place with a temperature of 32-34°C where the snake can bask. The animal does not need ultraviolet lamps.

Please note! The boa constrictor is extremely sensitive to humidity. It must be maintained at 80-90%. Therefore, you will have to spray the terrarium with warm water at least twice a day.
You will also need a drinking bowl. Snakes do not like to bathe, but this will help increase humidity and replenish fluid deficiency. At the same time, the snake should not be constantly wet, otherwise it will develop health problems. It should be given the opportunity to dry off.

Various plants can be placed in the enclosure as decoration. The animal is very careful with greenery and is unlikely to damage the plants. In addition, greenery will help the boa feel more comfortable due to the familiar environment and microclimate.

They feed the snake mice, young rats, and chickens. Young individuals are fed once a week, adults once every 10-14 days. They are given 2-3 mice at a time. It is not necessary to overfeed them, as boas cannot stop eating, which is dangerous to their health. There are usually no problems with deficiencies of certain substances. However, you can periodically sprinkle reptile supplements on their food. These are usually calcium and vitamins.

Most snakes are caught in the wild, so they can cost parasites. The most dangerous of these are ticks. After purchase, it is essential to treat the snake for parasites, as they damage the skin, which can lead to infectious diseases.
