Rotala Indica: a charming fairy of the underwater kingdom

Imagine the finest lace woven from thousands of emerald needles. It ripples in the water, shimmering in the light and creating the sensation of a weightless, almost magical veil. This is what Rotala indica looks like—one of the most elegant and beloved plants among aquarists.

This beauty, native to Southeast Asia, captivates not so much with its brightness as with its amazing, openwork texture. Its thin stems are densely covered with tiny leaves, which take on a warm pinkish-copper hue in good lighting. The plant creates a stunning backdrop against which any fish looks like a living work of art.

Growing Rotala indica is a dialogue with the aquarium. It reacts sensitively to conditions, telling us with its appearance whether it has enough light and nutrients. It is the perfect choice for those who want to add a little lightness, volume, and that very fairy-tale atmosphere that we watch for hours to their underwater world.

Plant description

Homestyler WWHomestyler WW

It belongs to the Rosoid class, genus Rotala. As it is a hydrobiont, it actively participates in the processes of water exchange.

Varieties of Rotala indica are distinguished by the number of leaf plates in the whorl:

  1. The most decorative variety. Two red leaves up to 2 cm long and up to 5 mm wide.
  2. A less beautiful Rotalia. A subspecies with 3 oblong leaves. The bush does not look as lush as the previous one.
  3. A plant with 4 leaves in a whorl. It does not look very original and is rarely used in aquascaping.

The most preferred option is with 2 leaf plates. The other subspecies have narrower leaves.

Plant morphology:

  • The stem is round, up to 25 cm long, and positioned vertically in relation to the rhizome.
  • The leaves are narrow when underwater and rounded when above water.
  • The color of the leaf plates is emerald, pale green, light green, purple, and pink.
  • The rhizome is creeping, covered with leaf buds.
  • The flowers are inconspicuous and have no aesthetic value.

Rotala indica rapidly forms side shoots and forms a dense and compact bush.

Distribution area

Homestyler WWHomestyler WW

The plant is native to Southeast Asia. After its “discovery,” it migrated to North America, then to Italy and the Caucasus. Today, it is found everywhere in all warm waters of the planet. Rotala grows in water but prefers to bloom in the air.

Growing and care

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

The capriciousness of aquarium culture is due to several factors. Fast-growing long-stemmed plants can be considered capricious, as they are quite soft and sensitive to the hydrochemical parameters of the aquatic environment. Varieties with red leaves are no less demanding.

Rotalia indiana is a pleasant exception to these rules. The plant is not demanding in terms of maintenance conditions. In terms of unpretentiousness, it can be compared to Riccia.

General care recommendations:

  • It is preferable to keep it in a tropical aquarium.
  • Rotala is good to use when starting a herbarium as a driver of the natural cycle.
  • The optimal layout is in front or along the side walls.
  • The preferred planting pattern is in groups of 20 branches.
  • In most cases, rotala grows faster than other aquarium plants and often exceeds the threshold of “aesthetic” height. Therefore, the plant needs to be trimmed weekly. You should also regularly rejuvenate the thickets by cutting off old branches.
  • It looks more impressive growing in the ground than floating in the water.
  • During the active growth phase, the lower leaf plates may be shaded, leading to bare stems.
  • When small roots form on the stems spreading along the water surface, it is necessary to plant the Rotala in the soil. Otherwise, it will grow slowly.
  • A plant taken from a paludarium or greenhouse can be immediately transplanted into a herbarium. The acclimatization period is relatively short.
  • Shoots that rise to the surface of the water may bloom, but they will lose their decorative qualities.

The plant must be moist during transport. Otherwise, it will begin to dry out and die.

Optimal water environment parameters

The water in the herbarium must always be clean, so it is necessary to replace 1/4 of the total volume weekly. The presence of turbidity negatively affects the decorative qualities of the rotala.

It is also important to monitor the water level. It should not be lower than the plant. Carbon dioxide supply is optional. The amount of CO2 that dissolves in water from the atmospheric air is sufficient.

Recommended parameters:

  • temperature — 24-28°C;
  • carbonate hardness —1-10° kH;

  • pH —5-7;
  • total hardness —2-12° dH.

Rotala indica is a heat-loving plant. If the temperature deviates from the optimal range, its growth slows down. It prefers moderately hard or soft water. Rotala does not develop well in an alkaline aquatic environment.

Lighting requirements

The decorative qualities of rotala directly depend on lighting. The plant prefers bright, intense light (from 80 to 100+ Lm/l). The optimal length of daylight hours is 12 hours. It is advisable to plant it closer to the light source.

You can build a lighting system based on the color of young leaf plates. In comfortable conditions, they turn red. It should not be forgotten that excessive lighting can lead to the appearance of algae that are destructive to the life of this culture. With insufficient light intensity, the leaves fade and the stem stretches. Rotal tolerates short-term shading normally.

Soil quality

Nutritious, not heavily silted soil is preferable. A porous substrate or coarse sand laid in a layer up to 7 cm thick is suitable.

Need for feeding

The plant obtains all the necessary nutrients from the water and does not need additional fertilizers.

Rotala indica is a true star of the aquarium underwater landscape, standing out with its bright color and elegant shape. Its narrow leaves can shimmer from a rich red to a burgundy hue, especially in good conditions, creating a fairy-tale landscape effect in the aquarium. This plant is not very easy to care for, but with sufficient light, feeding, and carbon dioxide, it reveals itself in all its glory, pleasing the eye and giving the aquarium a special depth and expressiveness.

Features of reproduction

Sunsky-online WWhidemyname

It propagates by stem cuttings. The recommended length of shoots for cutting is 8 to 10 cm. When handling the plant, be extremely careful and minimize contact with your hands.

Variations in the name

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

Among aquarists, Rotala indica is known by several names:

  • Round-leaved Rotala (Rotala rotundifolia);
  • Rotala indica.

The confusion in names arose due to the large number of hybrids within this species. A number of breeders believe that the penultimate option is more correct, and the latter refers to another species.

In addition, there are several common subspecies of Round-leaved Rotala, which further confuses aquaflora enthusiasts.

Rotala indica is truly a little miracle for any aquarium. Its delicate, almost luminous foliage can transform even the most modest underwater landscape, adding lightness and magic to it.

Although it requires some attention to its living conditions, the effort is well worth the result. When you create a suitable environment for it, it will reward you with its stunning appearance and become a real highlight of your underwater garden.

Ultimately, this “fairy” teaches us to see beauty in the details and appreciate the fragile harmony of living nature. By adding it to your home, you get not just a plant, but a living, breathing decoration that will delight the eye with its delicate beauty every day.
