In the world of exotic pets, there is a lizard that at first glance resembles a miniature dragon or crocodile. This is the spiny-tailed lizard. Its main feature is its impressive tail, covered with large spiny scales, which makes it look like a prehistoric creature.
Despite their menacing appearance, many species of spiny-tailed lizards have a calm disposition. They do not require constant attention, which makes them interesting pets for responsible reptile lovers. However, there are some important nuances to keeping them that you should know in advance.
In this article, we will explain in simple terms what this amazing lizard looks like, how to set up a comfortable terrarium for it, and how to feed it properly so that your pet will delight you with its health and unique appearance for many years to come.
Habitat and lifestyle characteristics
Spiny-tailed lizards form a genus of lizards belonging to the agamid family, which includes 15 species. They inhabit different places.
The main range covers several regions:
- North Africa;
- Arabian Peninsula (everywhere);
- Iraq;
- Syria;
- Iran;
- India;
- Pakistan;
- Afghanistan (eastern regions).
Reptiles mainly live in semi-deserts and deserts. It is always hot here, and in summer the temperature can rise to 40 degrees Celsius and above. At the same time, the air is very dry, with humidity levels sometimes falling below 20%. At night, it gets much colder, and the humidity increases 3-4 times. Spiny-tailed lizards are well adapted to such extreme conditions. This is evidenced by the fact that they can go without water for several months at a time.
Note! The liquid is extracted from plant food, which serves as their main diet. They find the stems and leaves of various desert plants. However, these reptiles are not completely herbivorous. Young animals often eat insects as well.

In nature, the reptile has quite a few enemies, including not only snakes, but also mammals and even birds:
- foxes;
- monitor lizards;
- different species of snakes;
- birds of prey;
- honey badgers and others.
Interesting! When they see a human or other danger, lizards instantly flee, trying to escape into a burrow or other shelter. They can change direction sharply, using their short, powerful tail as a rudder. The lizard can also strike with its tail to sting an enemy with its spines.
The reptile only bites in extreme cases. It is also known that some individuals begin to make low sounds when excited or stressed.
To escape from snakes and other threats, the spiny-tailed lizard dives into a burrow, leaving only the tip of its spiny tail on the surface and begins to vibrate it. Local hunters are aware of this feature and imitate the appearance of a snake with a stick.

Then the reptile shows the tip (about a third), which is used to pull it out. It begins to resist and sometimes sheds its tail and runs away, as other lizards do. But even its tail is used for food, and tails are especially prized because they contain a lot of delicious fat.

This is interesting! Recently, scientists have discovered an interesting phenomenon: the symbiosis between African spiny-tailed lizards and poisonous horned vipers. Lizards like to settle near snakes because the latter scare away humans, the reptiles' worst enemy.
Description of appearance
Lizards are quite large, reaching a length of 76 cm (including the tail), although some species, such as the African spiny-tailed lizard, grow up to 40 cm.
Weight also varies depending on species and sex — it can be 400-500 g, 600-800 g, and even 1.5-2 kg (the largest is the common spiny-tailed lizard, also known as the dabb).

The reptile got its name due to the presence of spines on its tail, the number of which varies between 10 and 30. They are used exclusively when attacking, when the animal dives into a burrow and shows only its tail to the enemy. Interestingly, it is not as long as that of many other lizards (50-70% of the body length). The shape is wide and flattened, somewhat resembling a crocodile's tail.
The coloration and body structure depend on the specific species. For example, the body of the dabb is light, gray-brown, with noticeable yellow stripes and spots on the back. If it gets too hot, the coloration approaches black, and then, on the contrary, may turn white.
The Indian species has a whitish belly and dark markings on the throat. Quite large black spots can be seen on the front of the thighs.

Particularly attractive decorated spiny-tailed lizard. Their backs are green, blue, or even red, sometimes with dark brown spots and rounded yellow areas. Their necks and throats are especially beautiful, colored a brilliant green.
Ornate skink
Individuals can be distinguished by their appearance. Females are usually slightly larger than males (at the same age). Sometimes other differences can be noticed. For example, males of the ornate spiny-tailed lizard have brighter coloring, while females have duller coloring.
The spiny-tailed lizard is a large lizard with a powerful, crocodile-like tail and spiny scales, which makes it look like a real little dinosaur. It lives in the dry regions of Australia, so at home it needs a warm, dry terrarium with good lighting and a place to hide. You can feed a spiny-tailed lizard insects – crickets, cockroaches, sometimes small rodents, but it is important not to overfeed it. Despite its prickly appearance, with proper care, this lizard can be calm and even get used to humans.
Rules for keeping and caring for
The spiny-tailed lizard is unpretentious in the sense that it can withstand large temperature fluctuations and go without water for a long time. On the other hand, they are very heat-loving, so you need to carefully monitor lighting and heating.
To ensure your pet is comfortable, you need to create suitable conditions.
- A horizontal terrarium is purchased for keeping them.. For one animal, it should be at least 50 cm wide and 60 cm long. The enclosure should be sufficiently high – from 70 cm.
- A particularly important requirement is maintaining a consistently high temperature.. Thus, in the hottest area (under an incandescent lamp), the temperature should reach 45-50 degrees. At the same time, in the “cold” corner, it should be 28-32 degrees.
- In addition to incandescent lamps, UV lamps must be installed.. Thanks to radiation, calcium is synthesized in the reptile's body, which is the basis of the skeleton and claws.
- Humidity should be low., because the animals are accustomed to arid conditions. Accordingly, there is no need to spray the soil or the walls of the terrarium.
- Since reptiles constantly dig burrows in nature, it is necessary to lay a sufficiently high layer of sand – 8-10 cm or more.. It can be mixed with small round stones and a little sawdust.
- The soil is cleaned periodically., replacing individual parts along with their droppings.
- To recreate the landscape, place several stones to imitate rocks. It would be useful to place caves and other shelters in the enclosure.
It is important to know that spiny-tailed lizards are unclean; they can tear up the soil, dig it, and even overturn the feeder. Therefore, the container can only be placed during feeding and then immediately removed.
Common spiny-tailed lizard (Uromastyx aegyptia)
Important! It is best to buy lizards that were born in captivity. According to statistics, up to 80% of animals caught in the wild die within the first 8 weeks of being placed in a terrarium.
Diet
At home, spiny-tailed lizards should be fed mainly plant-based food:
- cucumbers;
- lettuce leaves;
- dandelion leaves and flowers;
- carrot tops and roots;
- vegetables and fruits (berries) in a ratio of 1:3;
- a dry mixture of seeds and legumes (for example, peas, lentils, and a little millet);
- cabbage (rarely).
The food is chopped with a knife or grated. If the pet has not had water for a long time, it is worth giving it juicy fruits, such as tomatoes or cucumbers. However, it is better not to use frozen food.
Once a week, it is recommended to feed them crickets, Madagascar cockroaches, zoophobes, and blabers. Sometimes you can feed them newborn mice. They are a source of protein and calcium. But 80% of their diet should be plant-based, otherwise the lizards will get sick and die quickly.

The diet and feeding frequency depend on the age of the pet.
- Young lizards are fed mainly insects on a daily basis (once a day).
- Adult lizards, on the contrary, are fed mainly plant food, 2-3 times a week.

Periodically, 2-3 times a month, special supplements containing vitamins A and D should be added to the diet. For this purpose, ready-made preparations such as Calcium Plus can be used.
Varieties
To date, 15 species of spiny-tailed lizards are known. The most well-known representatives are described in the table.
Table. Main species of spiny-tailed lizards.
| Species | Description |
| Common (Dabb) | The largest spiny-tailed lizard, up to 76 cm long (including the tail), light gray in color with brown and yellow shades, sometimes almost black (if the temperature rises). |
| African | Small in size, with a total length of up to 40 cm, a short tail, olive-green coloration, sometimes orange and even brick-red. |
| Ornate | Up to 37 cm long, with a slightly flattened tail, green or blue in color, sometimes with dark brown lines and round yellow spots. |
| Indian | Up to 49 cm long, slender, elongated body, with a broad and short tail, brownish-sand color. |
| Armored | They grow up to 50 cm including the tail, the top is yellowish, almost white, the belly is dark. |
How to breed at home
Spiny-tailed lizards reach sexual maturity at 4 years of age, although in captivity this period can be 5-7 years. For breeding, the male and female are trained in advance to live in the same terrarium, but if they conflict, it is better to remove them.
After mating, females begin to eat a lot, and it is best to feed them insects and larvae. They lay their eggs in a special burrow (on the side). As a rule, they lay 20 to 30 eggs. After 3-3.5 months, small lizards appear, they are completely similar to adults, reaching a length of 5-7 cm.
Reproduction of spiny-tailed lizards
They should be fed exclusively animal food – small invertebrates.
Diseases and health maintenance
Spiny-tailed lizards can suffer from skin infections or encounter problems during molting. The best prevention for this is to maintain an acceptable humidity level in the range of 40-60% (it is better to install a hygrometer and monitor the readings, spraying if necessary).
Note! It is also recommended to lubricate problem areas (where the skin has dried out) with petroleum jelly or other compounds. The reptile should be transferred to another container and kept on newspaper, as sand particles can also get into the old skin. In extreme cases, a veterinarian should be consulted to remove the old layers of skin.
Sometimes fungal infections are observed—they are noticeable by the deformation of the scales and the appearance of a dried crust with a brownish tint. The spines on the tail are most often affected. Antifungal drugs such as Nystatin or Exoderil are used for treatment. However, it is also recommended to consult with a veterinarian beforehand.
Interesting facts
The spiny-tailed lizard is one of the most interesting members of its family. It is extremely undemanding, accustomed to living in very harsh climatic conditions, and can go without water for long periods of time.
There are many other interesting facts known about this animal.
- Spiny-tailed lizards cope well with intense heat.. Zoologists have observed them on soil heated to 55-57 degrees, while the body temperature of the reptiles themselves rose to 45 degrees. Moreover, they remained active. There is evidence that the critical body temperature is +50 degrees. But, of course, it is not worth experimenting with pets.
- Experienced breeders recommend breeding Indian spiny-tailed lizards at home.. It is less heat-loving than the African species, living quite normally at temperatures of 27-32 degrees, and if the temperature rises to 34 degrees, it hides in the shade. But most importantly, this species is easily domesticated, gets used to human hands, and even becomes attached to its owner. It has also been noted that the Indian spiny-tailed lizard is very intelligent and has an excellent memory.
- Spiny-tailed lizards lead a solitary lifestyle and never form groups.. These reptiles like to guard their own territory, so it is better to keep them separately. However, if a male and female get along peacefully and the terrarium is large enough, they can be left to live and breed together. But it is definitely not worth putting two or more males in one container.
Uromastyx ocellata
You can purchase spiny-tailed lizards from private owners or pet stores. The price is quite high, reaching 43-50 thousand rubles for one adult specimen.
The spiny-tailed lizard is a truly unusual and impressive pet. Its unique appearance, reminiscent of a miniature dragon or tiny crocodile, will leave no one indifferent. However, it is important to remember that this is not just a “living toy,” but a wild animal with special needs.
Keeping such an exotic animal is a serious responsibility. It will need a spacious terrarium with very precise temperature and humidity control, as well as a special diet of plant-based food. This pet is more for observation than for frequent interaction, as many individuals are quite shy.
If you are ready to create conditions for the spiny-tailed lizard that are as close as possible to its native desert and provide it with proper care for many years, it will become an amazing and calm inhabitant of your home. The main thing is to approach this with all seriousness and study all the nuances in advance.
