There are currently 41 known species of pythons, which are grouped into 9 genera and belong to the family Pythonidae. The most well-known types are:

  • Burmese python;
  • green tree python;
  • diamond python;
  • ringed python;
  • Indian python (on the list of endangered species);
  • ball python;
  • black-headed python.

Python can be a game-changer for animal lovers who want to get into data analysis or make apps that improve their interactions with dogs and cats in the pet care industry. This article looks at how using Python programming to track medical records, examine behavioral patterns, and even create entertaining training and care tools can be beneficial to pet owners. For anyone looking to get the most out of their furry friends, Python offers something for everyone, regardless of experience level with programming.

Size

Depending on its species, an adult python’s size can differ significantly. Antaresia childreni, the children’s python, is regarded as "very small". This relatively small member of the family Pythonidae can reach a maximum length of 1.2 meters. While several pythons from the African continent (Python sebae), India (Python molurus), New Guinea (Leiopython papuanus), and Australia (Leiopython amethistinus) can reach lengths of more than three meters, some Australian pythons (genus Liasis) never reach lengths of more than one meter.

With a length of roughly 60 centimeters, the dwarf python (Antaresia perthensis) is the smallest species. At 200 to 210 grams in body weight, it is also the lightest python.

The reticulated python is at the opposite end of the spectrum. With a maximum length of 10 meters in the wild, it is not only the longest snake species on the planet but also one of the heaviest, weighing 159 kg.

Appearance and anatomical features

With six rows of razor-sharp teeth, an independently moving jaw, and a tenacious tail that it consistently wraps around its victim during an attack, pythons are impressive snakes.

Numerous varieties of pythons exist, ranging from solid to two-colored, striped, ringed, spotted, and even rainbow in hue. The appearance of distinct colors is linked to the quirks of the snakes’ natural habitat’s native geographic areas.

Moreover, pythons have the following anatomical features:

  • the presence of two lungs. Most representatives of the snake kingdom do not have a left lung, and the right one is elongated and expanded;
  • teeth grow on the premaxillary bones;
  • the presence of a supraorbital bone;
  • rudimentary bones are present in the hemipenis.

Distribution

Most Python users are found in the Eastern Hemisphere. Although only three of the continents are home to native members of the Pythonidae family, their range encompasses all four: Asia, Australia, and Africa. Reticulated pythons have been observed swimming in the ocean; this is most likely how they arrived in the Pacific islands, where a few are currently engaged in breeding activities.

Within the genus Python, eight species are found in sub-Saharan Africa. Numerous species are indigenous to India and can be found throughout Southeast Asia, which includes the Philippines, southern China, and the Indonesian Moluccas. Australia and New Guinea are home to additional related genera.

The sole New World python is the bicolor snake (Loxocemus bicolor). In addition, it is the only individual in the family Loxocemidae. From southern Mexico to Costa Rica, forests are home to the bicolor snake. Although some specimens grow to nearly 150 centimeters in length, it normally reaches a length of one meter. Primarily a crepuscular snake, the bicolor snake consumes a range of small vertebrates on the ground.

Habitat

Different habitats support different subspecies of pythons. The majority of them live on land, though some—like the green python (Morelia viridis) of Australia and New Guinea—predominately in trees. Certain species have a preference for dry deserts. Swamps and tropical rivers are home to other species of pythons. Although terrestrial species can swim well and frequently crawl near water, they primarily hunt and eat on land.

Some pythons manage to live in urban and suburban areas despite their size, and they are prized for their superior rat-catching abilities.

Feeding habits

Smaller python species also consume rodents, amphibians, and reptiles; large python species mainly hunt mammals, lizards, and birds. Snakes with poison can be hunted by black-headed pythons. Because they prey on young crocodiles, birds, and small mammals like swamp rabbits, bobcats, raccoons, opossums, and foxes—some of which are already endangered—Burmese pythons pose a serious threat to the ecosystem of South Florida.

In addition to their keen sense of smell and vision, pythons can sense heat. The snakes can "see" the thermal shadows of birds and mammals even on the darkest night because of infrared receptors found in the pits between their lip scales. These reptiles use blows and bites to immobilize their prey, which is typically followed by strangulation.

Pythons use their two rows of teeth on the lower jaw and their four rows of backward-curving teeth on the upper jaw to catch, hold, and transfer prey into the esophagus. Pythons release mucus that contains trace amounts of innocuous venom proteins when they swallow their prey.

Reproduction

Not viviparous, but oviparous are pythons. In most, if not all, species, females coil around and sometimes even carry their eggs. In order to ensure that the eggs only come into contact with the mother’s body, females select thermally stable nesting sites before laying their eggs and coiling around them. The female maintains an elevated and relatively constant incubation temperature by emitting heat and trembling from a series of tiny muscle contractions when the air temperature starts to drop.

From two to one hundred eggs, depending on the kind, were laid.

40 to 100 days, depending on the species, is the incubation period.

Length: 25–70 centimeters at hatching

Maturity Age: 2 to 8 years

Life Span

Because they are hardy and long-living, python species vary in their maximum average lifespan. They live between 15 and 30 years on average. The ball python holds the record for longest lifespan—it lived to be 48 years old.

The maximum documented life expectancy of several snake species that are frequently housed at homes and zoos is as follows:

  • carpet python – 19.6 years;
  • green tree python – 20.6 years;
  • Children"s python – 25.7 years;
  • Sumatran short-tailed python – 27.8 years;
  • reticulated python – 29.4 years.
