Riccardia Moss: an exotic guest from Taiwan

In the world of aquarium plants, there are stars that catch the eye at first glance. Ricardia moss is one of them. It is not just greenery, but real living lace that can turn an ordinary aquarium into a fairy-tale underwater garden.

This wonder comes from the mountain streams of Taiwan. There it grows, clinging to wet rocks, forming dense, moss-like cushions of bright green color. Its uniqueness lies in the absence of stems and leaves in the usual sense. Instead, Ricardia consists of a thallus — a flat, branching plate.

For aquarists, this plant is a godsend. It is unpretentious, grows slowly, and therefore does not require constant trimming. It can be tied with fishing line or mesh to a log or stone, and over time it will beautifully cover the entire surface, creating the effect of a velvet hill or green waterfall.

If you are looking for a way to add volume, texture, and unique natural beauty to your aquarium, take a closer look at Ricardia. This Taiwanese guest has long won the hearts of aquascape enthusiasts around the world and is ready to win yours.

Ricardia moss was discovered in 2005 in the Taiwan area. Now it is purchased by aquarists from all over the world. It is especially popular in Japan.

Growing and care

The main requirement for growing this moss is crystal clear water. Any suspension in the water will cause discoloration and the appearance of algae. This will slow down growth and lead to rapid rotting of the lower part of the bush.

The plant does not need to be transplanted. It is able to attach itself securely to any base:

Be sure to use good filtration and CO2 (aquarists who have successfully grown Riccardia recommend setting 1-2 bubbles per second).

Water parameters for ideal maintenance

The conditions for keeping moss are a subject of much debate among aquarists. This is due to the undemanding nature of Ricardia. The best results are achieved when grown in soft water enriched with CO2. Under such conditions, it grows very quickly.

Internal filters should not be used, as they create too strong a current. It will tear pieces off the mother bush and spread them around the aquarium—in this case, Riccardia will turn into a weed-like plant.

Water tests for nitrates and phosphates should be performed regularly. Although Ricardia thrives in any water, high concentrations can destroy it. The optimal ratio is 1 to 15. To determine the nitrate and phosphate content, perform a drip test.

Lighting requirements

The intensity of the moss's color depends on the level of lighting:

  • if there is insufficient light, it turns light green.
  • when intensive – emerald, saturated.

It is best to plant it on decorations that will be placed in the foreground in the brightest places. Then it will quickly grow over them, becoming a good background and shelter.

Requirements for soil, nutrient substrate

  • It is not demanding on soil. In nature, it even grows on solidified lava. It covers stones and soil, attaching itself securely to them.
  • Aquarists often use natural and artificial driftwood as a place to plant it. This makes it easier to solve the problem of trimming it — you need to take the driftwood out of the water and remove the excess.

Fertilizer requirements

Liquid mineral fertilizers are used to promote moss growth.

Ricardia moss is a bright, unusual representative of the moss world that has long attracted the attention of designers and lovers of indoor plants. It originates from Taiwan, where it grows in humid tropical forests, clinging to trees and rocks. At home, this moss looks like a fluffy, slightly wavy light green pillow that seems to glow from within. It does not need soil, requires almost no care, and looks great in mini-gardens, on walls, or in pots. Thanks to its decorative qualities and unpretentiousness, Ricardia has become a popular “exotic” in modern interiors — a living decoration without unnecessary hassle.

Propagation

When propagating, it is best to divide a piece of moss into thin branches. You need to achieve thin and flat pieces, which should be attached to the base or pinned with a button. If the moss ball is too thick, it will not get enough light to grow, and the lower part, which should be attached to the base, will start to rot.

There is a way to glue moss for propagation:

  • You will need to take a piece of driftwood and any cyanoacrylate-based glue; you can try medical compounds.
  • Wipe the driftwood dry with a cloth.
  • Apply a drop of glue and place a twig on it for propagation. To help the base cover with moss faster, attach several pieces in this way.
  • Allow the glue to dry slightly, then place the decoration in water.

During the first week, it is best to place the driftwood with a piece of moss in the shade – during this period, it will adapt to its new environment (water hardness and acidity, temperature). Do not check the development of Riccardia too often. The first time you remove the button should be no earlier than 2 weeks. If threads were used, do not touch the moss.

Another form of Riccardia

Geekbuying WWStylewe WW

There is a rarer form of Riccardia – Riccardia Graeffei. It differs from Chamedryfolia in several parameters:

Parameter Difference
Appearance Larger than its relative, with more fleshy leaves and more massive branches.
Lighting More demanding on lighting, may not develop well even under lamps of the wrong spectrum. Good results can be achieved with 1W per 1 liter of water (Sylvania Grolux).
Water quality The optimal parameters are:

Ph – 6;

Gh – 7;

KH – 0.

Additional carbon supply is required, but fertilizers are not necessary.

Deviations from these parameters are acceptable, but not significant.

It is more demanding in terms of maintenance conditions; without the owner's attention, it begins to turn black and die. The reason for this may be the algicide Sidex — when used, poor growth and death of moss are often observed.

Ricardia is a truly special moss that can transform any aquarium. Its delicate, velvety texture and bright green color create stunning living pictures on rocks and driftwood.

Although it requires a little more attention than some other plants, the effort is worth it. Clean water, good light, and secure fastening are all you need for success. Don't be afraid of its slow growth; it's more of an advantage, eliminating the need for frequent trimming.

If you want to add something truly exquisite and unusual to your underwater world, Ricardia is an excellent choice. This modest guest from Taiwan can become the main decoration of your aquarium, giving it a unique and well-groomed look.
