Its rich green ribbons twist and intertwine, creating stunning volume and texture. This plant will not modestly hide in the background — it was born to be the center of attention and inspire admiration.

Despite its striking appearance, the crinum is surprisingly undemanding. Even an aquarist without much experience can handle it. All you need to do is provide it with some nutritious soil and moderate lighting, and it will delight you with its lush appearance for years to come.

Distribution

Crinum calamistratum originates from West Africa. Its homeland is Cameroon.

Growing conditions:

  • fast-flowing rivers and streams;
  • direct sunlight;
  • the substrate should be pebbly, rocky, or silty.

Despite the plant's popularity and high recognition among aquarists, only a few enthusiasts grow crinum curly.

Breeding and care

Crinum callistratum can only be kept in large aquariums. A water column height of at least 50-60 cm is desirable. This perennial bulbous plant has numerous long leaves that can block access to light for other aquarium plants. For this reason, it is usually placed near the side or back wall.

It is recommended to plant Crinum undulatum separately from other plants. When planting in the ground, only the base of the bulb is submerged – approximately 2/3 of the total height. The root system is powerful but fragile. Due to improper care, there is a risk of root rot.

Water parameters for ideal conditions

Geekbuying WWGeekbuying WW

Since the plant grows in western Africa, it must be kept in a tropical aquarium.

The water requirements are not so high:

  • temperature range from 20ºC to 35ºC;
  • acidity (pH) — from 5.5 to 8.0;
  • water hardness (dH) — 4 to 12 German degrees.

If the water temperature is around 20-22 degrees, crinum practically does not grow, but it does not die either, practically “freezing” in one state.

Compatibility

Ideally, they should be kept in a biotope with species that live in the same area in nature. They do not touch fish that are at least a few centimeters long and only show aggression during spawning season when protecting their fry. pH: 4.0–7.5

Clean, oxygen-rich water is one of the main requirements, as these acaras love a balanced aquarium with old and stable water. With high levels of nitrates and ammonia in the water, they can develop hole-in-the-head disease or hexamitiasis. Akara Maroni is not just an exotic plant with bright flowers, but a natural treasure that has long been used in traditional medicine. Its bark and leaves are used to support immunity, combat fatigue, and improve overall well-being. Despite the lack of extensive scientific research, many note its tonic effect and positive impact on energy and mood. The main thing to remember is that any natural remedy requires caution, and it is best to consult a doctor before use. It is ideal to combine Acar Maroni with characins, as a school of these fish will not scare them at all.

This is a small, timid fish that prefers to hide from danger. It is best to keep them in a school of 6 to 8 individuals, without large and aggressive neighbors.

Crinum curly is one of the most spectacular aquatic plants for aquariums: with long wavy leaves resembling green ribbons, it adds volume, movement, and natural beauty to the composition. The plant is unpretentious, grows well in different lighting conditions and does not require frequent feeding, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Over time, Crinum forms a lush green “cap” that becomes a real accent in any underwater landscape.

Fertilizer requirements

Geekbuying WWGeekbuying WW

It is necessary to strictly monitor the amount of mineral fertilizers. Exceeding the recommended doses will lead to a disturbance of the flora inside the aquarium and provoke active algae growth. Such conditions are unfavorable for crinum. Its leaves begin to die off, and the plant may die. However, a small concentration of salts is permissible.

CO2 supplementation2 is essential if the water temperature in the aquarium exceeds 26 degrees. Otherwise, the lower leaves will begin to die off, and the plant will take a long time to recover.

Crinum curly is a truly special choice for an aquarium. Its long, twisted ribbons create a unique, almost fairy-tale look. It brings dynamics, volume, and that very natural elegance to the underwater world that is difficult to achieve with other plants.

Although crinum requires a little more attention than the most undemanding species, growing it is a fascinating task. With the right soil, good lighting, and a little patience, it will generously reward you with its growth. Over time, it will turn into a powerful and beautiful bush that will become the centerpiece of the entire composition.

So, if you want to add an expressive accent to your aquarium, crinum curly is an excellent candidate. It doesn't just grow, it creates a mood, shelters fish, and makes your underwater garden truly alive and unique. Try it, and you're unlikely to remain indifferent to its curling beauty.
