Red Neon Tetra – characteristics of the fish, types and rules of keeping

Among aquarium fish, few can match the popularity of neon tetras. These small, bright freshwater dwellers have become a symbol of the home aquarium. And the red neon tetra is a real gem in this family.

Unlike its more common counterpart, the regular blue neon, this fish has more than just a glowing stripe. Its lower body shimmers with a rich scarlet color that creates a stunning contrast with its blue upper body. This sight is mesmerizing, especially when a school of fish frolics among the plants.

Keeping red neons is not very difficult, but there are some important nuances. They like soft, slightly acidic water, like in their native rivers of South America. They need a calm aquarium without large aggressive neighbors. Under the right conditions, these little sparkles will delight you for many years.

Habitat

In nature, the red neon tetra (also known as the cardinal tetra) inhabits the rivers of South America (Orinoco, Rio Negro). It prefers slow-flowing water bodies, channels, and backwaters.

These fish live in dense tropical forests, so almost no sunlight reaches the water. They live in schools of several individuals and feed on insects and small crustaceans.

Characteristics

The maximum length of a red neon tetra living in captivity is 5 cm, although in nature it can grow up to 6 cm. The body is elongated, slightly flattened on the sides, with an olive back and white belly.

An emerald-colored stripe stretches from the tail to the eyes, which reflects light well and looks very attractive—it's as if bright scarlet lights are flashing in the aquarium. Below the stripe, the body is bright red.

The fins are usually transparent, with the dorsal and anal fins sometimes having a faint blue border.

Females and males are practically indistinguishable from each other, but after reaching sexual maturity, you can notice that the abdomen of females becomes more rounded.

The red neon tetra is a bright and undemanding fish that is often chosen by both beginners and experienced aquarists. Despite its similarity to the common neon tetra, the red neon tetra has a warmer color—its rich red-gold side gives it a special charm. These fish are peaceful, live in schools, feel better in the company of their fellow creatures, and need space to swim. They are easy to keep: they need clean water, moderate lighting, soft soil, and plants that mimic their native shady rivers. The main thing is not to forget about regular water changes and balanced feeding, then the red neons will be active and will delight the eye for a long time.

Red neons are kept in groups of 5-10, with an aquarium volume of 50 liters or more. Firstly, they look more impressive in groups, and secondly, this corresponds to the nature of the fish.

The bottom should be covered with substrate, preferably dark in color—sand, pebbles, or gravel will work.

The fish are very active and often jump out of the water, so the tank should be covered.

It is essential to provide shelters and underwater flora to make the fish feel more comfortable. It is best to place the plants around the edges and leave the center empty.

Any popular species are suitable, including:

Dim lighting is preferable—floating plants are suitable for creating a slight twilight effect.

Since red neon tetras are tropical fish, they need a high temperature of 23-27 degrees Celsius. The water acidity should be 6.0-7.0 pH, and the hardness should not exceed 10 dH. A filter (the current should not be too strong), a compressor, and regular siphoning of the substrate are required, as well as weekly water changes of 25-50%. The more stable the aquarium parameters are, the more comfortable the fish will feel.

Red neons are not picky about food, so the key rules for feeding are variety and high-quality food.

There are special products for this type of fish, but they should also be given frozen food—tubifex and daphnia are good choices.

Neons have small mouths, so food should be chopped up. Portions should be small, so that the fish can eat them in 3-5 minutes, and they should be fed twice a day.

Breeding

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Breeding red neon tetras is a difficult task even for experienced aquarists. A separate 4-liter tank per pair is used as a spawning tank, with a water level of 12-15 cm.

Optimal conditions are very low hardness (1-2 dH), pH 5-5.5, and a temperature not lower than 25 degrees. The water is disinfected using a UV lamp or ozonator. Dim lighting and a large number of plants are required, and the aquarium must be left to settle for 2-3 weeks before introducing fish.

A week before spawning, the females and males are separated from each other, kept at a temperature of 22-23 degrees, fed abundantly, and the day before being placed in the spawning tank, feeding is stopped. Spawning begins in the evening or at night—the female lays 300-500 eggs. It is better to separate the parents immediately, otherwise they will eat the eggs. The larvae appear in 20-36 hours and begin to swim on the 5th-6th day.

As soon as the fry start swimming, you need to start feeding them. Nauplii and infusoria fry are suitable for starters. At the same time, you should set up a weak air flow in the aquarium. In addition, you need to gradually increase the hardness of the water by adding a little bit from the main aquarium every day. As the fry grow, they are transferred to adult food.

Compatibility

Red neon tetras are calm, peaceful fish.

The following species are suitable as neighbors:

Due to its small size, the neon tetra can fall prey to any fish that can fit it in its mouth, so neighbors must be chosen very carefully.

Advice for owners

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW
  • Red and blue neon tetras are somewhat similar in appearance, but their living conditions differ. The former species is more capricious and sensitive to living conditions than their counterparts.

  • The water in which red neons live in nature has a characteristic brown tint due to the tannins dissolved in it. To achieve this effect at home, add oak leaves, a special additive, or regular black tea to the aquarium (the only condition is that the product must be of high quality).
  • Under the right conditions, red neon tetras are resistant to disease.

The most serious danger is neon disease, which is incurable. It is caused by parasites that penetrate the fish's tissue. The first signs are loss of bright coloration and impaired coordination.

If you find sick individuals, it is best to destroy them and then thoroughly disinfect the aquarium.

  • Since red neon tetras are sensitive to toxins that accumulate in the water, aquarium owners need to have special tests for the concentration of nitrogen compounds—NH3/NH4, NO2, and NO3. These are often the main cause of disease and death in fish.
