However, this crab is not just a decoration. It comes from mangrove thickets, where the tides ebb and flow. This means that for a comfortable life, it needs a special home with a piece of land and water. A simple aquarium will not suit it.

Keeping this crab is an exciting challenge. You will need to recreate a piece of its natural environment, feed it properly, and understand its character. If you are ready to take these nuances into account, the red mangrove crab can delight you with its amazing life for a long time.

The red mangrove crab is a bright and active inhabitant of the tropics that can become an unusual pet. It is unpretentious in care, but requires certain conditions: a spacious terrarium with a moist substrate, access to fresh and salt water, warm temperatures, and shelters. The crab is omnivorous, easily accustomed to being hand-fed, and can live for several years. The main thing is not to keep it in a regular aquarium, because it is an amphibious creature that needs both land and water. With proper care, it will be healthy, active, and interesting to observe.

General information

The red mangrove crab is a small tropical crustacean. In its natural habitat, it can be found among the mangrove thickets of Southeast Asia.

These little bullies need water to live comfortably, but it is important to note that they spend a lot of time on land. In their natural habitat, crabs live in brackish water, so it is incorrect to call them freshwater crustaceans. However, in aquaterrariums, mangrove crabs can swim peacefully in fresh water.

There are about 150 species of red mangrove crabs in nature.

It is very interesting to observe the life of mangrove crabs. Crustaceans like to climb to the top of driftwood and carefully observe what is happening in the house. If they suspect even the slightest danger, the crabs quickly jump off the elevation and swim away to their shelter. They are also very good designers — if they don't like something, they move the scenery to another place.

There are some difficulties with breeding crabs, as there is a floating larval stage. For this reason, only imported mangrove crabs caught in their natural habitats are available for sale.

Appearance

All members of the family have the same body structure. Their rounded body is covered by a carapace, a dense shell. The abdomen is located at the bottom, and the belly is bent inward. Of the five pairs of walking legs, the first pair resembles claws. Crabs use them to defend themselves from predators and obtain food. The movable stalks rising above the head have two eyes. The mouth contains jaws.

The carapace of an adult male reaches 5 cm in length, while that of a female reaches 3 cm. Their coloration is variable, but crabs with dark purple backs are often found. The walking legs are a similar shade, but the claws are bright red. Where the segments connect to the carapace, they are orange or yellow. These little bullies can pinch painfully, so be careful when you want to pick up your pet.

Red mangrove crabs live for 4 years when kept in comfortable conditions.

Habitat

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

The mangrove forests of Southeast Asia are the natural habitat of red mangrove crabs. Tides are a frequent occurrence in this area. After the water recedes, the crabs happily scurry around in the soil in search of tasty treats, the gifts of the sea. The water in these areas has low salinity, as ocean water mixes with river water.

These little bullies are excellent cleaners – they crawl along the shore and pick up everything that people have left behind or that has been washed ashore by the water.

Mangrove crabs are not particularly large.

Care and maintenance

Before buying a mangrove crab, novice aquarists should familiarize themselves with the peculiarities of keeping tropical exotics and learn how to care for the aquarium.

This crustacean feels perfectly comfortable on its own, so don't worry that it will get bored; you can try buying just one crab at first. In tropical forests, each animal has its own territory, which it considers its personal property and protects from uninvited guests. This is where they hunt and find food.

Rule 1. Spacious terrarium

For a small pet, you can buy a 30×30 cm tank for a comfortable life. If you plan to get more than one pet, you will have to calculate the area of the aquarium, taking into account that one mangrove crab needs 30 cm2. Having enough space will reduce the risk of clashes between individuals.

Although crabs are aggressive by nature, according to the description, they are often frightened and try to escape to a hiding place. Therefore, it is necessary to install caves and grottos in the tank, as well as stones, driftwood, coconut shells, and half of a clay pot.

Rule 2. Proper temperature

It is recommended to maintain a stable temperature of +22-28°C in the tank, and the water temperature should not be lower than +24°C. To ensure optimal conditions, it is recommended to install a heater. If the water and air temperature drops, the crabs will lose their appetite.

Rule 3. Suitable substrate and plants

You can pour sand or place stones at the bottom of the tank. Aquarium fish substrate is available in stores and is also suitable for crabs. When designing the tank, keep in mind that crustaceans only spend part of the day in the water and most of their time scurrying around on land. Therefore, do not fill the aquarium with too much water; 15 cm is sufficient. With this amount of water, the aquarium crab can climb out of the water without assistance and bask on the prepared island.

Plants can be used to decorate the tank. Hornwort, Indian fern for aquariums, and duckweed are unpretentious plants.

Note! The diet of mangrove crabs must contain a sufficient amount of plant-based food, otherwise the pets will eat the plants in the aquarium.

Rule 4. Tank with a lid

The tank must be covered with a lid, otherwise the pet will escape, as mangrove crabs can easily climb even on a smooth glass surface. If an escape does occur, don't panic. To catch your pet, simply place a plate of water on the floor. After a while, the crab will come running and fall into the trap.

Compatibility

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

When buying at a pet store, novice aquarists often ask whether the crab will get bored in the tank if it lives alone. Representatives of this species, on the contrary, prefer solitude, so they are even wary of their fellow crabs. Therefore, they will not be bored.

When breeding crustaceans in an aquarium, they behave territorially. If a rival crawls into someone else's territory, a fight is inevitable. And it will be so fierce that it could result in the loss of claws. But over time, the lost limbs will grow back.

Living together with certain types of fish is unsafe for the latter. If a crab is sitting in what it considers to be its territory and an aquarium fish swims back and forth near it, the crustacean will not think twice about what to do with it. It will simply pinch it.

But there are fish with which crabs are compatible. These are:

  • barbs;
  • guppies;
  • mollies;
  • danios, which are very small in size;
  • swordtails.

Macrobrachium shrimp are also good neighbors for cohabitation with red mangrove crabs.

Before buying other animals and adding them to the tank, it is worth learning in detail about their character, habits, behavior, and living conditions, as well as how they behave towards other inhabitants.

In nature, red mangrove crabs lead a solitary lifestyle.

Feeding red mangrove crabs

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Crabs eat on land, so food should be placed on a rock protruding from the water. Your pet will run out onto the rock and see that you have prepared some tasty treats for it.

What to feed a crab:

  1. It is recommended to give them leafy salad, finely chopped carrots, zucchini, pumpkin, cabbage, and not very sweet fruits every day. If the crab does not get enough plant-based food, the aquarium plants will suffer.
  2. Twice a week, you should treat your pet to lean raw meat. This includes bloodworms, insects, tubeworms, and seafood.
  3. You can buy food designed for feeding crustaceans at a pet store. This is not the best option, but it is acceptable.

A varied diet will affect the brightness of the crab's body color – it will become brighter and more attractive. It will also be interesting to observe its behavior. The pet will get used to the feeding ritual and will already be waiting for the owner to come and feed it. As soon as the aquarist appears in sight, the crab will run out onto the rock and pull its claws, waiting for the next treats.

Over time, the mangrove crab will lose its fear of its owner. Then it will be interesting to watch it crawl along the bottom and tidy up its home with its claws: it will sort through the pebbles and move them to another place, according to its taste.

Molting

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

At a young age, pets molt 6 times a year, every 2 months. Adults molt twice a year.

When the shell becomes too small for the crab, it leaves it. With each molt, the animals show noticeable growth. This indicates that they are in good health. Do not remove the old shell from the aquarium; the crabs will find something to do with it. After molting, the color of your pet may differ slightly, but over time, the shade will return to normal.

Please note! Moulting is a stressful time in the life of invertebrates. If difficulties arise, add a few drops of iodine or a pinch of sea salt to the water.

Red mangrove crabs are omnivorous crustaceans.

As we can see, keeping red mangrove crabs is an exciting but responsible project. They are not pets that you can simply put in an aquarium with water and forget about. They need a specially equipped area with both land and water.

If you are willing to take the time to learn about its needs and create the right habitat, you are in for an amazing experience. It is very interesting to observe its active life, molting, and exploratory forays. It is a real piece of mangrove forest in your home.

Remember that the main key to success is stable conditions and proper nutrition. With good care, your bright pet will be able to delight you for many years, demonstrating all its unique habits.
