Eichhornia azurea – Water Hyacinth

Imagine an elegant plant gently swaying on the surface of a quiet pond, decorating the water with a scattering of blue and lilac flowers. This is Eichhornia azurea, often called water hyacinth. Despite its common nickname, it is very different from its more famous “relative” — Eichhornia excelsa, which takes over entire bodies of water.

This perennial inhabitant of warm waters amazes with its delicate beauty. Its flowers, resembling small orchids, rise above the water on slender stems, and its leaves form a floating rosette. Unlike aggressive species, the blue water hyacinth is much calmer, making it a welcome guest in decorative ponds and aquariums.

In our article, we will take a closer look at this amazing plant. You will learn how to create the right conditions for it, what the peculiarities of caring for it are, and why it deserves a place in your water garden. This is the story of a plant that combines fragile beauty with the amazing ability to live between two elements — water and air.

Distribution

With the exception of the African Eichhornia nathans, this genus is represented mainly by non-tropical species. Its main habitat is the marshy areas and stagnant ponds of South and North America.

It has become widespread in Brazil. The plant entered aquariums in the 1980s when it was imported from South American countries to the United States.

In natural conditions, the underwater form is practically non-existent. Some varieties have spread beyond their natural range as weeds.

Thanks to Eichhornia crassipes, Eichhornia azurea was known for some time as a dangerous weed and was banned from import.

Eichhornia azurea, or water hyacinth, is a beautiful floating plant with bright purple-blue flowers and swollen stems that keep it afloat on the water's surface. It grows quickly, loves warm, calm water, and reproduces actively, which can clog water bodies and interfere with other nature. Although it looks pretty, in the wild it often becomes a weed, especially in the tropics and subtropics. It can be kept in artificial ponds, but with caution — so that it does not get out of control.

Cultivation and care

This plant looks more attractive when floating, as it produces elegant clusters of inflorescences resembling orchids in shape. However, this requires a large open tank. Therefore, only the underwater form is used in aquariums.

Beginners are advised to wait before growing Eichhornia azurea. When submerged, the leaf plates become fragile, which makes the cutting process difficult. If too much pressure is applied, they turn black and fall off. In addition, the plant needs space. This must be taken into account when placing other representatives of underwater flora nearby.

General care recommendations:

  • The recommended tank height is 50 cm or more. When the stem stretches to the water surface, the leaf plates begin to grow rapidly along it. In this position, they lose their decorative qualities and become spoon-shaped. In addition, the top of such a shoot is no longer suitable for submerged cultivation. If you cut it off, the plant will continue to produce leaves in the cut area and will no longer transition to an underwater form. Therefore, you must always ensure that the leaves of the plant do not reach the surface of the water.
  • The plant is grown in aquariums with a volume of at least 100 liters, in humid greenhouses, paludariums, and even in pots. The main requirement is that Eichhornia needs space for its leaves to fully open.
  • The optimal placement plan is in the middle or at the back. If planted in a ladder pattern, a beautiful solitaire-like pattern is created.
  • Pruning frequency — at least once a month.
  • Since all species of eichhornia react negatively to sudden changes in hydrochemical parameters, the stability of the aquatic environment should be monitored.

In addition to Eichhornia azurea, Eichhornia diversifolia is also popular among domestic aquarists. However, due to the unusual color of its flowers and the shape of its inflorescences, Eichhornia azurea is preferred.

Optimal water parameters

Since Eichhornia grows well in stagnant water in natural conditions, the plant should not be placed in areas with strong currents. Traditionally, a weekly replacement of 30% to 50% of the total water volume is required.

  • temperature: 22-28°C;
  • pH — 4-7;
  • CO2 — 20-30 mg/l;
  • hardness — 2-16° dGH.

The plant is thermophilic. In natural conditions, it does not bloom in cool summers, and the vegetative mass dies at the first frost. Therefore, the temperature should not be allowed to fall below 22°C.

Lighting requirements

The plant is quite light-loving. It is necessary to provide intense lighting. Fluorescent lamps with a power of 0.6 W/l can be used as artificial lighting devices.

The optimal length of daylight hours is at least 12 hours.

Soil quality

The plant can be grown in neutral soil and in soil-type substrates. A mixture of clay and sand would be a suitable option.

The use of substrates and root fertilizers is recommended.

Fertilization requirements

Eichhornia azurea responds well to both liquid and soil fertilizers.

When there is a lack of nutrients, the leaves located in the lower part of the stem turn black. Additional carbon dioxide supply is welcome.

Features of propagation

The plant propagates by cuttings. When daughter shoots with 3 leaves form on the side shoots, they can be separated and transplanted to a new location. Seed propagation at home is not possible.

Variations of the name

Eichhornia azurea has several alternative names:

  • Eichhornia aquatic;

The plant is also often called rooted water hyacinth.

Eichhornia azurea, or water hyacinth, is not just a beautiful plant. It is a real find for lovers of aquariums and tropical ponds. With its delicate blue flowers and floating rosette of leaves, it creates a unique, almost fairy-tale look, enlivening any water surface.

However, behind this beauty lies a strong and resilient plant. It grows quickly and helps keep the water clean by absorbing excess nutrients. This makes it a useful helper, but it requires attention to prevent it from filling up the entire space.

Overall, Eichhornia is a striking example of how nature combines elegance and practicality. With proper care, it will become the main decoration of your pond, bringing a touch of tropical summer and natural harmony to it.
