Encountering this reptile in the wild is very lucky. Gila monsters lead a secretive lifestyle, spending most of their time in underground shelters. Their world is the hot deserts and rocky foothills of the southwestern United States and Mexico, where they are ancient and respected masters.

This article invites you to the world of the amazing venomous lizard. We will learn how it survives in harsh conditions, why it needs venom, and why this lizard, despite its danger, needs our protection more than our fear.

Habitat and lifestyle

Gila monsters live in the southwestern United States (Nevada, Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah), Mexico (Sonora, Sinaloa), and northern Guatemala. They choose arid, rocky terrain as their habitat. This can be rocky deserts, dry canyons and streams, thickets of cacti or small shrubs.

In spring, the animals are diurnal until the air temperature rises above 24°C. Closer to summer, they begin to switch to nocturnal hunting, hiding during the day in burrows and other shelters. The reason for this is that lizards they lose moisture quickly in hot weather., and it is very difficult to find water in desert areas. The venomous lizard can occupy someone else's burrow or dig its own if necessary.

Poisonous

This is a slow and clumsy predator that does not run away from its enemy even in case of danger. The lizard stops in its tracks and does not move. In most cases, this helps, as the animal has bright warning colors that hint at the presence of poison.

Note! Despite living in the desert, the gila monster loves wet places and bodies of water, where it eagerly bathes at every opportunity. The lizard swims using its paws, which it paddles with like oars.

Appearance

This species has a dense, rounded body. Its body length, including the tail, reaches 60-80 cm. Its head is flat and slightly flattened. Its eyes are small, black, and have movable eyelids. Its mouth is large and wide, allowing it to swallow large prey.

The upper and lower jaws are covered with a row of sharp teeth that are curved in the opposite direction. The tail is thickened, shortened, and rounded at the tip. Fat deposits accumulate in it.

Note: Their bodies are covered with large, thick scales that form a protective armor.

There are bony growths (osteoderms) on the sides of the body, on the back, and on the legs, which are designed to protect against other predators. The body is orange with numerous irregularly shaped black spots. There may also be red and yellow spots, depending on the habitat. As a result, the lizard develops a unique carpet pattern. Some individuals are brown or gray in color.

Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced.

Diet

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

Gila monsters have a slow metabolism, so they feed very rarely. However, when they go hunting, they eat as much as they can. The animal can eat up to 35% of its own weight at one time.

Their diet consists mainly of rodents, bird eggs, chicks, and bats. Gila monsters hunt for prey on the surface or underground. This can include bird nests, animal burrows, or caves with bats.

The search for food is ensured. with a hypersensitive forked tongue, which works similarly to a snake. The animal can sense prey from a distance of more than 1 km. To prevent the prey from escaping, the venomous lizard bites it and injects saliva with a small amount of venom into the wound. This paralyzes the victim for a while. Its favorite food is bird eggs, which the lizard easily cracks with its powerful jaws.

Heloderma suspectum

Please note! In difficult times, the venomous lizard may eat carrion or hibernate until better times. Without eating, the animal can survive for up to 5-6 months.

Reproduction

The mating season begins in late winter or early spring, when the reptiles wake up from hibernation. At this time, the males fight for the right to mate with the female. They grab each other with their teeth and try to knock each other onto their backs.

Such a fight can last for hours until one of the males gives up. Moreover, such fights do not cause any harm to the animals, as they have thick and durable skin.

After mating, the female incubates the eggs for 40-50 days. Then she lays them in a secluded place. The number of eggs in a clutch can reach 12. After 3-4 months, the young hatch from the eggs. From the very first days, they lead an independent life. Neither the male nor the female take part in their fate.

Sexual maturity occurs at 3-4 years of age.

The weasel is a small animal similar to a mouse, but with sharp teeth and poison capsules in its jaws. It lives in Europe and western Asia, most often in forests, among rotten wood, stones, and thick litter. Despite its tiny size, the dormouse can kill small animals — its bite is poisonous, although it is not dangerous to humans. Interestingly, this animal hardly sleeps, constantly hunting to maintain a high metabolism, and is incredibly voracious — eating more in a day than it weighs itself.

Housing conditions

The most important condition for keeping them is the strength and reliability of the terrarium. The animal is poisonous and can harm the health of the owner and their family. The glass should be at least 4-5 mm thick.

Ventilation must also be sturdy and reliable. Strong steel wire should be chosen. Aluminum wire is not suitable, as lizards can easily tear it with their strong jaws.

The terrarium should be spacious so that the pet can walk around in it. The ideal shape is a cube. It is recommended to place driftwood and other decorations as decor. Rolled gravel with the addition of sawdust or coconut shavings is used as a base for the soil to retain moisture.

Please note! The water bowl should be the size of the lizard, as gila monsters like to bathe and generally sit in the water for a long time.

The terrarium should be heated spotted. In one corner, the temperature is maintained between 30-32°C, in the other – 24-25°C. The heating is turned off at night. The animals are fed no more than once a week. They can easily withstand starvation thanks to the fat reserves in their tails, but overfeeding them is harmful. A maximum of 2-3 mice and 1-2 eggs per feeding. If you feed the animal every day, it will surely die.

Important! Mice, chicken eggs, and quail eggs are used as food. Young animals feed even less frequently—once every two weeks. One to two mice and one to two eggs per week are sufficient for them.

Varieties

There are only two varieties of poisonous snakes. Let's look at both of them.

Arizona gila monster (Heloderma suspectum)

It inhabits the southwestern United States in the states of Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada. This animal is up to 60 cm long and weighs up to 2 kg. Its diet consists mainly of bird and turtle eggs, as well as rabbits, squirrels, and mice. During one season, the lizard feeds only 8-10 times, but very actively. This species has a bright reddish-orange color with black spots that match the red soil of the Arizona deserts. The species is listed in the International Red Book and is on the verge of extinction. Hunting this lizard is prohibited by law.

Mexican beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum)

It inhabits the north and central parts of Mexico in deserts and semi-deserts. Some subspecies live in northern Guatemala. It is a large lizard up to 90 cm long and weighing more than 4 kg. Its body color is light brown or black-brown with yellow spots. This species hunts snakes, lizards, birds, and rodents. It readily eats eggs and young terrestrial mammals. It hunts only at night, attacking sleeping prey. Nutrients are stored as fat in its thick tail. The species is also listed in the international Red Book. The total population does not exceed 200 individuals.

Interesting facts

Let's look at some interesting facts about the venomous lizard:

  • feeds no more than 10 times a year.
  • can eat up to 35% of its body weight at one time.
  • swims “doggy style.”
  • it spends about 90% of its time in hiding.
  • its bite is dangerous even to humans.
  • its tail acts as a camel's hump, i.e., it is a storehouse of nutrients.
  • despite its appearance, the snake eagle never attacks first.
  • the animal's venom is used in the production of diabetes medication.

This slow-moving animal is excellent at climbing trees thanks to its sharp claws.

The venomous snake is a creature that can easily be called a living contradiction. Slow and massive, it seems like a harmless relic of the past until it reveals its most important secret—a powerful venomous bite. This unique lizard venom is not used for hunting, but as a formidable weapon of self-defense, making it one of the most respected inhabitants of the North American deserts.

Its life is a master class in survival in extreme conditions. It spends up to 95% of its time in cool underground burrows, conserving energy and moisture, and only comes to the surface when the weather is right. Its ability to store fat in its tail allows it to survive for months without food, turning its body into its own pantry.

Getting to know the poisonous lizard reminds us how fragile the balance of nature can be. Its threatening appearance is just its way of living in a world where it is often targeted. These unusual lizards are protected by law, and their disappearance would be an irreparable loss, depriving our planet of one of its most extraordinary and fascinating creatures.
