General course of dog training without a trainer

It may seem difficult to train your dog without the assistance of a professional trainer, but it is totally doable with the correct strategy and a little perseverance. It’s not necessary to be an expert to see results, whether you’re working on behavior modification or teaching your dog basic commands. You can make training enjoyable for both you and your dog if you put in the necessary time and have a solid grasp of their needs.

For dog trainers, developing a close relationship with their pets is essential. You need to spend quality time with your dog in order for them to trust and respect you. It will be simpler to teach your dog new skills the more positive interactions you have with them. It’s important to comprehend their body language and communication in addition to giving orders.

When training without a professional, patience is essential. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to dog training; each dog learns at its own speed. While some dogs may learn commands quickly, others might need a little more time. To promote progress, it’s critical to maintain composure, act consistently, and recognize and reward positive behavior.

With the right patience, consistency, and approach, it is completely possible to train a dog without the assistance of a trainer. The secret is to use positive reinforcement, like treats and praise, in conjunction with basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "come." You can instill excellent behavior in your dog and fortify your relationship with them by structuring training sessions to be brief and enjoyable, fostering trust, and adhering to routines.

What is a general training course?

OKD is a set of guidelines for dog obedience and owner-given command compliance. Despite being created by Yazykov V.V. nearly a century ago, it is still relevant today. We can say that this forms the basis of the dog’s future training because every service animal is required to complete a general course before being given a specific specialization. Yet, teaching a pet an OKD course won’t be unnecessary.

Every major cynological organization holds OKD competitions. These include verifying that the dog follows the trainer’s instructions without question and that all of the abilities and reflexes learned during training are in place. Judges with the necessary qualifications evaluate dogs competing in OKD; they are able to identify even the smallest defects in a dog’s performance of a given command.

What is included in OKD for dogs?

The dog must learn ten fundamental skills and commands during the general training course. What is covered in the general dog training course is as follows:

  1. Movement next to the owner on the command "Next!";
  2. The dog approaches after the command "Come!";
  3. Return to the place on the command "Place!";
  4. Execution of the commands "Lie!" "Sit!" "Stand!" given by voice and gesture from a distance;
  5. Bringing an object thrown by the trainer on the command "Bring!";
  6. Calm attitude to the muzzle;
  7. Neutral, passive reaction to spilled food. Stopping unwanted actions on the command "No!";
  8. The dog"s reaction to a gunshot;
  9. Showing the bite to a stranger (judge);
  10. Overcoming an obstacle course consisting of a boom, a ladder, a blank fence and a barrier.

Having mastered the general training course, let’s examine each of these points in more detail and see how the dog should react to commands:

Command "Next"

The trainer turns on the spot to the left, right, and around after yelling "Next." The dog has to follow the trainer’s movements exactly. The dog must move in the same direction as the human, stopping at his left foot and changing course when necessary. When The dog is permitted to sit close to the left leg when stopping. If the dog moves two meters away from the trainer during the exercise, it is deemed incomplete. and even more.

Command "Come to me!"

Giving the command "Come to me!" with both voice and gesture is a part of OKD courses for dogs. The dog should hurry up to the trainer and sit at his left leg as soon as it hears the command.

Nevertheless, the dog does not have to circle around a person. It is acceptable for the dog to sit in front of the person during this exercise, and only after getting the command "Next" can it move to the left leg. If the dog does not approach the trainer within 15 seconds of being given the command, the skill is not finished. Calling the animal by his nickname is acceptable to get his attention.

Team "Place!"

Giving the OKD command "Place!" to a dogboth verbally and gesturally possible. The basic idea of the exercise is this: the trainer tells the dog to "Lie down," at which point the dog is put down and an object is placed next to it. After relocating 15 meters, and with the judge’s approval, at least 30 seconds later, the speaker gave the order "Come to me!" and repeated it with a gesture. Running up the animal by using the command "Place!" returns it to its original location after at least 15 seconds.

The dog should sprint toward the trainer, run back to its spot, and lay down no more than a meter away from the object that is lying down. The trainer approaches the dog after 30 seconds and gives it the order to "Sit." The dog has to lie down until now. If the dog lies down more than two meters away from the left object, the exercise is not recorded.

Execution of commands "Lie down!", "Stand!"And" sit!»

The next thing that is included in the OKD of dogs is the execution of the command "Lie down!», «Stand!» and «Sit!». Commands are given by voice, and are duplicated by gestures. The trainer leaves the dog to sit, and he himself moves away 15 meters. With the help of commands, a person forces the animal to take the necessary position. Each command must be performed twice from different positions. The dog is obliged to carry out commands the first time, as well as to remain in the desired position, without moving towards the owner. If the trainer gives the command at the wrong time (for example, when the dog has turned away), then the dog"s glasses are not removed. A failure of the exercise is considered to be the dog moving 5 or more meters from any position.

"Fetch"

It takes practice to teach a dog the OKD skills of "Fetch" and "Bring." The dog is initially positioned at the trainer’s left foot. The person throws the object forward from himself, but no less than ten meters, after demonstrating it to the dog and giving it the order to sit. Following a brief interval, the instructor issues the order to "Fetch" or "Bring," replicating the command with a motion. The dog needs to chase after the object, lick it, and then sit in front of the owner or at their left leg.

Following a brief interval, the dog must deliver the item into the person’s hands when given the command to "Give." When the dog sits in front of the trainer, he must sit it close to the left leg by giving the order "Next." If the dog refuses to give the object, places it more than one meter away from the person, or just doesn’t bring it, it is deemed a failure.

Muzzle

The general approach to training dogs in accordance with disciplinary courses ensures that the dog will approach the muzzle calmly. The exercise is as simple as putting on a muzzle and saying, "Walk." The trainer calls the dog and then takes off the muzzle. The dog shouldn’t respond in any manner to the muzzle. When wearing a muzzle, displaying resentment or hostility is regarded as falling short of the required behavior.

Reaction to treats on the ground

Teaching the dog the proper response to food or tasty treats that are lying on the ground is an essential part of the OKD (general training course) curriculum. Nothing should be picked up by a dog outside of its bowl unless the owner gives permission. Your dog’s life and future health may be saved by doing this. Regarding the command "Fu!," the dog is required to halt its actions upon receiving this directive. Two techniques are used to assess this skill: forbidding the taking of any object and forbidding the taking of a treat from hands.

  • In the first case, the trainer gives the dog a treat from the palm of his hand several times, and at the command of the judge – another piece on the palm is prohibited by the command "Fu!». After 5 seconds, the hand with the treat is removed, and the test is considered passed.
  • In the second case, any object is thrown away from you, and the dog is given the command "Bring!". At any time, the command "Fu" can be given!”, and the dog should immediately stop its actions. If she runs after an object – stop, if she already carries an object in her mouth – drop it and wait for the next command.

If the dog continues to act in the same way after repeating the team "Fu!" twice, the test is deemed unsuccessful.

Reaction to a shot/loud sound

In OKD, dog training necessarily requires the animal to react calmly to a shot (a loud, sharp sound). Studying this reaction is allowed when performing any exercise, except for the “Next” and “Bring” (fetch) commands. After performing any skill, the judge asks to repeat the exercise. At the same time, unnoticed by the dog, a shot is fired from a starting pistol at a distance of 15 meters from the animal. If the dog stops executing the command at the moment of the shot, it is considered that it has failed the shot test. It is also unacceptable for the dog to be frightened, and for it to move away from the trainer after a shot.

Showing the bite

Every exercise in the OKD for dogs assesses a different skill. But displaying the bite is solely a psychological tactic. The judge must inspect the animal’s bite while applying this standard. The owner must present the animal to the judge and show the bite in order to accomplish this. In this situation, the dog needs to act composed and show no signs of anxiety during the process. Should the dog turn away, refusing to bare its teeth, the task is deemed unsuccessful.

Overcoming obstacles

Like training any other dog, training a German Shepherd generally entails overcoming challenges. In addition to being given vocally, commands are also repeated by the trainer with gestures. The following is the process for passing the obstacle course: the trainer brings the animal to the obstacle with the judge’s approval, then uses a command and a gesture to direct the dog to the barrier.

The trainer circles the obstacle on the right side after the dog has successfully cleared it, but not before the dog lands. The trainer calls the dog and then moves on to the next device. The animal is allowed two more tries to cross the obstacle if it is not successful the first time.

Assisting the animal to get past the obstacles is strictly prohibited. The dog needs to cross the track and field barrier without making contact with anything. The dog uses only the ramps to go up and down as it navigates the boom on its own. It is acceptable for the trainer to walk beside or in back of the dog. If the dog needed assistance from a person or just failed to clear at least one obstacle in three tries, the set of exercises is deemed unsuccessful.

Price for a general training course

After deciding to teach their dog the fundamentals of obedience, many owners frequently ponder how much and where to locate a general training program that won’t break the family budget.

After examining a variety of sources, we have calculated that a course of lessons typically costs roughly 7,000 rubles. This, of course, is merely a rough guide; the trainer in each area and club is free to assign as many students as he deems appropriate. You get 16 group classes at the training ground, where everyone trains together, for this amount of money. The instructor will probably not turn you down if you require personal training, but you should be aware that the cost of OKD for a dog in this situation will be roughly 1000 rubles per lesson.

That means that the total cost of your individualized training will be 16,000 rubles. You determine whether training a dog in the same skills for more than twice the average cost is necessary. It is important to remember that bitches in heat and sick animals are strictly prohibited from attending classes, no matter how much OKD for dogs in any group costs. This can cause a rift at the location by diverting the attention of other dogs.

Is it possible to train a dog in OKD on your own?

nubia Many GEOsnubia Many GEOs

Breeders are increasingly attempting to teach dogs in general without the assistance of a trainer. Sometimes this works out well, with the dog masterfully following all the commands, but other times, no matter how hard the owner tries, there is no discernible improvement. What is required for such actions to be successful?

First, let’s talk about the dog itself: if your dog is intelligent and perceptive, it will grasp what is expected of it very fast and will gladly comply with all the demands. Additionally, the outcome largely depends on how persistent and patient the owner is. If the owner lacks the endurance to repeatedly demonstrate to the dog what he wants, it will be impossible to conduct OKD for dogs at home. If all is well and you have endurance, you should be able to teach your pet some simple commands.

Step Description
1. Build Trust Spend time bonding with your dog, play and give rewards to create a positive relationship.
2. Basic Commands Teach simple commands like "sit," "stay," and "come" using treats and praise for motivation.
3. Leash Training Practice walking on a leash to ensure your dog follows your lead without pulling.
4. Consistency Repeat training daily and stay consistent with commands and rewards for better results.
5. Socialization Expose your dog to different people, pets, and environments to build confidence.
6. Patience Give your dog time to learn and avoid getting frustrated; progress can be slow.

Without the assistance of a professional trainer, training your dog can be a fulfilling experience that improves your relationship with them. It is possible to successfully teach your dog important commands and appropriate behavior at home if you adhere to the fundamental values of consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement.

To avoid overburdening your dog, training sessions should be brief, interesting, and limited to one task at a time. While treating your dog with kindness and understanding promotes better results, regular practice and gradually increasing challenges help maintain progress.

Recall that each dog learns differently, so exercise patience and acknowledge your progress in tiny steps. You can train your dog to be a docile and well-behaved friend with commitment.
