Musk turtle: one of the smallest reptiles in the world

In the world of turtles, where many species are impressive in size, there is a real tiny one. This is the musk turtle, one of the smallest reptiles on the planet. It is easy to overlook or mistake it for a pebble at the bottom of a stream.

These small reptiles lead a very secretive lifestyle, preferring quiet bodies of water with muddy bottoms. Their main feature, apart from their size, is their special ability to defend themselves. If disturbed, the turtle emits a sharp musky odor, which is how it got its name.

Despite its modest size, the musk turtle is an amazing creature with unique habits. Let's get to know this little creature better and find out how it manages to survive in the big world.

Range, habitat, and conditions

Musk turtles are found throughout the United States and can also be found in southeastern Canada and Mexico. The reptile leads an exclusively aquatic lifestyle, preferring small lakes and backwaters with stagnant water and muddy bottoms.

Turtles of this species do not swim in deep water, but crawl along the bottom. In good, warm weather, musk turtles come out of the water to bask in the sun. They come ashore and climb onto tree branches that hang over the water.

Musk turtle

Musk turtles are solitary creatures. They almost never show aggression towards their fellow creatures when they meet, but they also do not seek communication or group living. These reptiles feed mainly on mollusks and insects, sometimes catching fish and eating aquatic plants.

Note: Musk turtles do not shy away from carrion, which is why they are called the “sanitation workers” of the pond.

In northern regions, these reptiles hibernate, using ready-made shelters or digging burrows. Turtles begin digging burrows when the water temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius. Several turtles can hibernate in one burrow or shelter.

Range map

Musk turtles have many enemies. When attacked by a predator or a human, the reptile can bite and scratch fiercely, but its main weapon is glands, which emit a strong, unpleasant odor. Because of this characteristic, the reptile was named “Stinky Jim.”

Please note! The state of Alabama is home to the small musk turtle, which is protected by local law.

Appearance

The main distinguishing feature of musk turtles is their long and flexible neck, which allows them to reach their hind legs. The reptile's shell is decorated with three longitudinal ridges of a wave-like shape (more pronounced in young individuals, they may smooth out with age).

The color is quite dull: gray, olive, brown. This is necessary to protect and shelter the turtle from predators. Its dark head has white spots or stripes. There are webbing between its toes.

Turtle S. odoratus

Musk turtles have very strong and long tails, which act as rudders when swimming. Males have longer tails than females. Male turtles also have spiny scales on their hind legs.

Housing conditions, care

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

Musk turtles adapt well to living in captivity. However, it is important to create suitable conditions for these reptiles to live comfortably.

They can be kept alone or in groups. However, it is important to monitor how the relationships between individuals develop. If signs of aggression appear, hostile turtles should be separated.

Aquarium

To keep a musk turtle, you will need an aquarium with a capacity of 50 liters. The more turtles, the larger the tank should be. The water depth can be 50-60 cm. For babies, a depth of 15 cm will suffice. As they grow older, the amount of water can be increased.

A 50-liter aquarium

Important! Some breeders do not recommend exceeding a depth of 15 cm, as musk turtles are poor swimmers and need to surface from time to time to take a breath of air. In fact, this is a misconception!

In their natural environment, musk turtles live in bodies of water up to 85 cm deep. They have a special organ on their tongue that allows them to extract oxygen from the water. These reptiles can stay at the bottom without needing to surface for many months. Of course, from time to time, the turtle will still come to the surface, but it will spend most of its life underwater.

Design

An aquarium with musk turtles should have a shore with a gentle entry into the water. An ultraviolet lamp can be placed above the ramp, under which the turtle will sunbathe. However, it is important to understand that your pet will rarely use the shore.

You should also place the following in the aquarium driftwood, that rise above the water and serve the same purpose for the turtle as the shore. In addition, young turtles, which are very poor swimmers, sometimes cling to driftwood to breathe normal oxygen.

Substrate is not necessary for musk turtles. Washed river sand decorated with stones and driftwood can be used as a substrate. Plants in aquariums with reptiles of this species grow very poorly, so preference should be given to algae that grow on the surface of the water: scindapsus, ivy, etc. Artificial plants are also suitable, as they will serve as a shelter for your pet.

Sternotherus odoratus

An aquarium with turtles needs a powerful filter that will remove debris and waste products.

Microclimate

The water and air temperature should be kept within this range. 22-25 degrees Celsius.. In water that is too warm or too cold, turtles become less active. This species of reptile does not need a UV lamp (it can only be installed above the resting island).

This is important! To maintain health and provide the body with all the vitamins it needs, it is enough to create a balanced diet for your pet.

Hygiene

Once a week is important. change 1/3 of the water in the aquarium. The water for changing should be the same temperature, settled. Do not use tap water. From time to time, it is necessary to clean the bottom of the aquarium with a vacuum cleaner. Monitor the condition of the filter and its performance.

The musk turtle is a tiny creature that barely reaches the size of a palm, but lives completely independently in the swamps and ponds of North America. Despite its miniature size, it swims well, hides from predators, and can live for more than 50 years. This turtle is not afraid of the cold and often hibernates at the bottom of ponds, breathing through its skin. Although it hardly ever communicates and is almost invisible, the musk turtle is a true survivor in the world of reptiles.

Diet

Musk turtles need a complete diet. To replenish the balance of vitamins and minerals, reptiles are given:

  • fresh shrimp;
  • fish, cut into pieces with bones;
  • snails;
  • earthworms;
  • bloodworms;
  • crickets;
  • liver;
  • cockroaches.

Hiding turtle

Important! From time to time, turtles are offered plant-based food: cucumbers, carrots, zucchini, etc. Reptiles can eat aquatic plants that are in the aquarium. If turtles live together with small fish, they may hunt them.

Musk turtles are also fed complete dry food:

With a complete diet, turtles do not need any additional supplements or vitamins. In case of vitamin and mineral deficiency (determined by a veterinarian), you can give the reptile supplements:

Zoomed Reptivite with D3/without D3

Young animals are fed daily. Adult turtles eat 2-3 times a week. The portion of food is selected individually. It is very important not to overfeed your pets, as reptiles are prone to obesity.

To keep the water clean, it is recommended to feed musk turtles in a special breeding tank.

There are two species of musk turtles:

Common musk turtle. The average size of the reptile does not exceed 13.5 cm. Its color is olive, brown, or reddish-brown, allowing it to hide from predators. There are white stripes on the head. It has three longitudinal ridges on its shell.

Keeled musk turtle. It is larger in size, up to 15-16 cm. The upper part of the shell is brownish-brown, and the lower part is yellowish-brown. There are dark stripes on the head, and the nose is “heeled.” There is only one longitudinal ridge on the shell. It prefers to settle in swampy rivers and lakes with lots of greenery on the banks.

Reproduction

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

To breed musk turtles in captivity, you will need a full-fledged island of land with soft soil and shelters. The mating season for reptiles of this species falls during the warm months. Mating takes place underwater.

For laying eggs the female comes ashore. Most often, it digs a shallow hole, but it can use various depressions or simply leave the eggs on the ground. It is very important to ensure that the eggs do not roll into the water, as they will die after an hour in it.

This is important! The number of eggs from one turtle can vary from 1 to 7.

For successful incubation of eggs, the temperature must be maintained. 25-29 degrees. It can take 60 to 170 days from the time of laying to the hatching of the first turtles. The young are born fairly independent and do not need parental care.

Eastern Musk Turtle (Stinkpot)

Important! It is best to keep young animals in a separate aquarium with a small amount of water. For the comfort of young reptiles, additional lighting can be provided. The same food is used as for adult individuals, but in smaller quantities.

Diseases and health maintenance

Musk turtles are extremely unpretentious and have strong health. Most diseases and problems arise from improper care.

The following are common problems.

  1. Parasites (helminths). Infection can occur from other turtles or from eating raw contaminated food. Treatment is determined by a veterinarian. Antiparasitic drugs are usually used.
  2. Conjunctivitis. Poor care, hygiene violations, and inadequate nutrition can provoke disease. Treatment is selected by a veterinarian. It is also important to normalize nutrition and ensure aquarium hygiene.
  3. Stomach tympany. This disease is common in aquatic species. It manifests itself as severe bloating, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The turtle may blowing bubbles with the mouth. The cause of the pathology is improper feeding of the pet. It is treated with medication and a suitable diet.

To avoid complications and problems in the future, turtles should be purchased from reputable breeders, and animals caught in the wild should be avoided.

Interesting facts about the animal

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

Musk turtles can “breathe” with their tongues. Thanks to this ability, they can stay underwater for many months.

  1. Although reptiles spend most of their lives in water, they are very poor swimmers.
  2. These turtles have an excellent sense of smell, which allows them to search for food even in poor visibility.

Turtle shell

The cost of a musk turtle depends on its age and size. The average price ranges from from 3,000 to 10,000 rubles. This is a beautiful and undemanding pet that is perfect for a beginner.

So, the tiny musk turtle is proof that greatness is not measured by size. It has adapted perfectly to life in streams and ponds, becoming an important part of its ecosystem. Despite its miniature shell, this reptile has amazing endurance and an interesting personality.

For nature lovers, this turtle serves as a living reminder of the diversity of the animal world. It can be observed in the wild or, with a responsible approach, kept in a home terrarium. In any case, it requires respect for its natural needs.

Encountering such a small but completely independent turtle invariably brings a smile and admiration. It reminds us that there is a place in the world not only for giants, but also for such modest yet charming creatures whose lives are full of great discoveries.
