History of the origin of the species

Geekbuying WWGeekbuying WW

The Doberman Pinscher is a 19th-century breed that is still quite new. The dogs were named for tax collector and policeman Friedrich Louis Doberman, who is considered the "father" of the breed. Many financiers and others handling substantial sums of money at the time required strong protection from robbers. Consequently, Friedrich made the decision to produce a new breed of security dogs despite lacking specialized training. None of the animals in his modest shelter for stray animals could provide the genetic foundation required to establish a new breed. Doberman purchased Old German Pinschers from a fair in Appold (Thuringia), and he wanted to enlarge them.

Since Louis did not keep any records, it is impossible to pinpoint the breed’s exact ancestors. Greyhounds, shepherd dogs, Manchester Terriers, and Blue Great Danes are thought to have taken part in the selection process.

Literally after 20 years of active work, Doberman received new fierce, fearless dogs with increased aggression. They were not as graceful and elegant as the modern type, and had an uncontrollable character. The breed was called Thuringian Pinschers. Their quick reaction, high speed and physical development were appreciated by the police and security services. The dogs became widely known in Germany. After the death of Friedrich, the Pinschers were named in his honor – Dobermans, Otto Geller continued the development of the breed. He began to soften the obstinate character and reduce aggression in pets. The first show of new dogs was held in 1897. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first clubs appeared in Germany, and Dobermans received international recognition only in 1960. During World War II, the breed was actively used by sapper services and search parties. Today, about five monuments to these dogs have been erected.

  • Colors: black with red, limited tan markings on the muzzle, chest, ears; brown-chocolate with similar tan markings.

The Doberman Pinscher is a sleek, muscular dog breed with protective instincts that is also devoted, intelligent, and extremely active. Dobermans are quick learners who, when properly trained and socialized, make excellent family companions. They were originally bred for security and protection. They are well-known for their close relationships with their owners, require frequent mental and physical exercise, and thrive on human interaction. While they can be naturally wary of strangers, with the right guidance, Dobermans are both loving pets and vigilant protectors.

Characteristics and behavior

Homestyler WWSunsky-online WW

A beginner should not own a Doberman Pinscher. These animals require extensive and rigorous training; the owner alone determines the breed of puppy that will mature. The character of the Doberman cannot be described based on the standard. Every person is different.

Either way, this breed is not nearly as vicious and violent as the media portrays it. These canines actually make excellent family pets since they are able to ward off intruders. They don’t usually get angry too much, but they are inherently suspicious of strangers.

Dobermans are still used on search teams, in law enforcement, and in customs. In fact, some dogs are trained to despise people. However, the majority of this breed’s members are incredibly loving and compassionate.

Advantages

  1. Doberman Pinschers are one of the best breeds for protection. They have a strong territorial and object attachment, will protect their family and home at any cost. Physical qualities (speed, reaction speed, muscle development) only help them in this.
  2. Hotly devoted to their family and owner. Quite friendly and peaceful, treat household members and even small children well. However, it is not recommended to leave such a dog with children.
  3. Very smart, easy to train, quickly remember commands. They can assess the intentions of a stranger and, in case of danger, will try to neutralize the intruder. Moreover, the Doberman will not bite a stranger, but rather will drive him into a corner and wait for further commands. These pets are usually fearless and purposeful.
  4. The external attractiveness of the breed is highly valued among breeders. It is pleasant to walk along the street with such a protector and catch the admiring glances of passers-by.

Disadvantages

Every myth contains some element of truth.

  • Dobermans have an average threshold of irritability, which means that they do not like loud sounds and sudden movements. Therefore, they may not like the screaming or laughter of a child. Pets will really protect their territory and their things from anyone who wants to encroach on them.
  • They do not tolerate other pets, especially males. They are jealous of their family and personal space. On walks, they can be uncontrollable – chasing cats, fighting with other dogs. Females are considered more docile, but they are more stubborn and cunning than males.
  • This breed is willful, manipulates the owners and strives to take a leadership position in the house. If the dog is not raised correctly, and it does not know that the person is the main one, then the consequences can be catastrophic: from torn pillows to crippled people. Dobermans need to be trained for a long time and methodically to get a good friend and protector.
  • It is impossible to predict what a puppy will become. The habits and temperament of the parents rarely become an indicator.

Care and maintenance

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Due to their short hair, Dobermans require little maintenance. Docking the tail and ears causes the most trouble. This can be done by owners and nurseries alike.

  • The tail is cut off on the 5th day from birth, ears – on 2-4 month of life (it is important to tie the cartilages correctly so that they grow together at the right angle).
  • It is better to raise such a dog in a house with an adjacent territory, Dobermans love space, and it is simply inconvenient to keep large pets in an apartment. But this is quite possible with regular walks. Pinschers are short-haired, so in cold climates, street keeping is not recommended.

Education and training are the key components. It will take the most time, energy, and nerves to do this. When faced with the traits of the breed, some people seek help from dog training schools.

  • Before buying a puppy, determine the place where the bed will be installed later. In addition, all the necessary items for daily use are purchased: bowls, brushes, shampoos, toys.

Nutrition

The diets of Doberman Pinschers are not particular.

  • They will need about 2 kg of food per day, of which about 40% are meat products.
  • As a puppy, the dog is fed 6 times, at 5-6 months – 4 times, by the year they switch to one meal a day. The portion size depends on the activity of the animal and its weight.
  • You can choose special dry food or develop a natural diet. In the first case, you need to pay attention only to super-premium class products, preferably holistic (grain-free). Such food is quite convenient to use, but is not always well absorbed.
  • When feeding a dog on natural food, it should receive all the necessary vitamins and minerals. Therefore, the diet must include proteins (lamb, veal, chicken, rabbit, sea fish, eggs, cottage cheese, kefir), carbohydrates (vegetables and fruits, rice, buckwheat and oatmeal) and fats (olive and linseed oil, can be in the form of seeds).

It is absolutely prohibited to feed certain products:

  1. Bones (tubular chicken, fish);
  2. Pork;
  3. Citrus and exotic fruits;
  4. Potatoes, corn, heavy vegetables;
  5. Butter.

Feeding a puppy or adult dog on a natural diet requires giving it a vitamin complex that has been recommended by a veterinarian.

Clean water should always be freely available. During walks, you need to take something to drink with you. Cheese or special bones and ropes from a pet store can be used as a treat.

Health

Although this breed has a strong immune system, many breeders are unhappy with how sickly their pets are. This is typically brought on by inadequate diet, overindulgence in physical activity, and birth defects. In Europe, heart failure cases have increased in frequency. Dobermans used to have an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years, but these days it’s only 9 to 13 years.

To improve your chances of purchasing a healthy dog, you must first ask the breeder about any immune system deficiencies that the puppy’s ancestors may have had. Appropriate care, frequent check-ups at the clinic, and prompt vaccinations are essential for a long and healthy life.

Vaccinations

The puppy should receive its vaccinations against harmful viruses on time in order to maintain its immunity.

  1. The first two vaccinations are done in the nursery, where a pedigree sheet and a veterinary passport are also started. Vaccinations are carried out at the age of 8 weeks. The puppy is vaccinated against hepatitis, leptospirosis, coronavirus, distemper and enteritis.
  2. The procedure must be repeated after 2 weeks, then upon reaching 6 months and 1 year.
  3. Vaccination should be updated every year.

Your dog must have a rabies vaccination if you intend to travel with them. The vaccination is given at seven months of age and is repeated annually.

When giving a Doberman Pinscher vaccination, keep in mind these few guidelines:

  • It is strictly forbidden to walk the dog before the second vaccination;
  • After each vaccination, quarantine should be observed for 2 weeks;
  • Vaccinations should only be carried out in specialized clinics;
  • Before vaccination, make sure that the Doberman Pinscher puppy is completely healthy;
  • For 14 days before vaccination, it is necessary to cleanse the pet of worms using special preparations;
  • It is forbidden to vaccinate nursing or pregnant females, as well as males after mating;
  • If after vaccination the pet has negative symptoms that last more than one day, you should contact a veterinarian.

Diseases

Breed diseases are typically linked to Dobermans’ musculoskeletal systems. These dogs are susceptible to inflammation of the intervertebral discs and elbow and hip dysplasia, an incurable disease that causes acute pain and lameness due to excessive stress on the paws. Compression of the cervical vertebrae, or wobbler syndrome, is becoming more widespread.

Additionally, Doberman Pinschers are prone to skin conditions:

  • Dermatitis;
  • Allergic reactions;
  • Cutaneous histiocytoma (benign solitary tumor);
  • Alopecia (hair loss);
  • Lipomas (fatty tumors);
  • Fibrosarcomas (tumors with rupture of connective tissue);
  • Melanomas (benign tumors, skin cancer).

Overfeeding pinschers can lead to obesity. Gastritis and eating disorders are common. Furthermore, the Doberman breed line is prone to diabetes, a hereditary disease.

Heart failure and cardiomyopathy cases have increased, as has the incidence of von Willebrand disease, which worsens blood clotting and causes internal bleeding.

Walking

Dobermans have a lot of energy. For them, the secret to a strong skeleton and muscular growth is walking.

  1. If the dog has access to free access to the street, then walks can take no more than an hour, but twice a day. If the pet lives in an apartment, then the walk should last 2 hours.
  2. You can walk a puppy after the second vaccination, using a harness or a loose collar.
  3. The pet needs to be trained to walk next to the owner. Early socialization (acquaintance with people and animals) will help to cultivate confidence and restraint in the dog.
  4. Dobermans love active games. They like to run after balls and sticks. A good option would be joint sports, cycling or swimming.

Remember that the breed has short hair. It is necessary to put the dog in protective overalls during very cold temperatures. Additionally, you should seek shade from the sun on hot days.

Grooming

Despite having short hair, Dobermans shed a lot, particularly during the winter months.

  • The dog needs to be combed with a soft brush or a glove brush a couple of times a week.
  • Dust accumulations and dirt after walks are removed with a damp towel, paws are washed under warm water.
  • But bathing is done no more than once every six months.
  • Cropped ears cause less trouble, but this procedure is prohibited in many countries. Ears of a natural shape must be examined and cleaned of sulfur with a soft cloth 2 times a week. Erect ears also need to be checked for dirt, but this can be done less often.
  • Deep-set eyes Dobermans can water and fester. They are wiped with a weak decoction of chamomile 2-3 times a week.
  • Claws need to be trimmed carefully, using a special claw cutter. Only the light ends are cut off so as not to damage the blood vessels. The pads of the paws can crack, in which case their lubricate with thick cream.

The dog needs to be treated for ticks and fleas in the summer and fall. If you select a special collar or shampoo, the process won’t be invasive and will happen on a regular basis.

Mating

Gshopper Many GEOsTicombo - Global Event Tickets Many GEOs

Because there are many Dobermans in the breed, mating does not always result in breeding. In any event, the animals need to be healthy, pathogen-free, and vaccinated.

The sexually mature stage of life begins at 8 or 9 months. Males start to mount during this time, and females go into heat.

Only at 20 months, following the onset of the third estrus, should mating take place. A girl’s level of readiness can be gauged by several indicators:

  • The pet spreads its paws wide and throws off its tail;
  • The discharge becomes lighter;
  • The loop begins to swell.

You can invite an expert to handle the denouement without any issues. It will benefit animals and make mating easier. The male introduces himself to the girl first, and they begin to get to know each other. The procedure takes roughly fifteen minutes, during which time the animals get accustomed to sniffing each other. She’ll let the boy mount as soon as the bitch is ready.

While the duration of a sexual encounter is roughly 10 minutes, the lock-up lasts for up to 30 minutes. The female should not be permitted to sit; instead, her stomach should support her. It is necessary to direct the cables into the loop. The male might not be able to reach it if the size difference is very large; in such cases, it should be planted. After two days, mating should be repeated.

Key points in training

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

Dobermans are canines with a complicated temperament that is difficult to train. When a puppy sees a person with strong morals, he will identify the leader and submit to him. You can get in touch with a specialized pet school, where canine educators will start training the pinscher and provide instructions to the owner on how to proceed.

At three to four months of age, the puppy should be able to walk on a leash, recognize his nickname, and react to people’s comments. He should also be able to feed himself. As a guard dog, a Doberman will not comply with basic orders. Its intelligence necessitates ongoing training and increasing in complexity; therefore, you can transition to whistles or claps once you have learned voice instructions.

The animal must hone perfect performance of these commands:

It will be challenging to control otherwise.

How to choose a puppy

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

One breed of dog that can be extremely aggressive is the doberman. Thus, buying a puppy from a recognized nursery ensures that your future pet will be in a normal mental state. A reputable breeder will also provide comprehensive details about the dog’s parents and other ancestors, outline any shortcomings, and provide all required paperwork.

  • If a puppy is bought at 2-3 months, then it must be disinfected from worms and at least once vaccinated. As permitted by law, the tail is already docked by this time, and in some cases the ears.
  • Compliance with standards is important if a puppy is bought for exhibitions, but then its price will be much higher than usual. Pet-class puppies are sold for 15,000-20,000 rubles, and show-class puppies – from 40,000 rubles.

One exceptional breed that is well-known for its strength, loyalty, and intelligence is the Doberman Pinscher. These dogs are regarded as both protective and loving companions and have a sleek, powerful appearance. Although Dobermans were initially bred as guard dogs, with the right training and socialization they can make wonderful family companions.

Extreme loyalty is one of the Doberman’s most important characteristics. They make great watchdogs because they are loyal to their families and inherently protective. They can also be kind and loving at the same time, especially to their owners and young ones.

But having a Doberman demands dedication. Due to their high levels of energy, they require frequent exercise and mental stimulation in order to be content and healthy. As long as they receive adequate exercise, a Doberman can thrive in a variety of settings, including an apartment or a house with a yard with the correct care, training, and attention.

Ultimately, the Doberman Pinscher is an intelligent, adaptable dog that suits a wide range of lifestyles. This breed can provide its owners protection, loyalty, and affection for a lifetime if given the right care, training, and attention.
