Bucephalandra Thea: the main thing is stability

If you are interested in aquarium plants, you have probably heard of Bucephalandra. These amazing plants with velvety leaves have become a real hit among aquarists. One of the most spectacular and desirable is Bucephalandra Teya.

It is difficult to confuse it with other species. Young leaves are striking with their bright red or orange color, which eventually turns into a rich green. But the plant only displays this fireworks display of colors when it feels completely safe.

The secret to success in keeping Bucephalandra Thea is very simple: it does not need super-powerful lights or tons of fertilizer. Stability is much more important for it. Any sudden changes in water parameters, temperature, or lighting cause it severe stress.

It can sit in one place for months without showing any signs of growth if something is wrong in the aquarium. But as soon as you provide it with calm and stable conditions, it slowly but surely begins to reveal its beauty, delighting you with new luxurious leaves. This is its nature.

Bucephalandra Teya is a beautiful and unpretentious plant for an aquarium, but its main requirement is stability. It does not like sudden changes: neither in temperature, nor in water composition, nor in lighting. It feels best in a calm aquarium with a gentle current, where the parameters remain at the same level. If you do not disturb it with transplanting and do not change the conditions unnecessarily, it will grow strong, with brightly colored leaves, and will delight you with its appearance for years.

Tea, like all other Bucephalandra, is native to the island of Borneo (Southeast Asia) and grows in reservoirs, as well as on their banks and rocks. The alternation of heat and tropical rains has allowed Tea to adapt to both above-water and underwater habitats.

Growing and care

Caring for Bucephalandra is relatively easy.

The main thing is to follow a few rules:

  • Maintain the recommended water parameters (temperature, acidity, hardness).
  • Avoid overexposure of the plant to light. Lighting intensity should be moderate.
  • Do not allow the aquarium water to become contaminated or the leaves of Teia to become overgrown with algae.
  • Excessive root depth will lead to rot.
  • Do not change the maintenance conditions abruptly, otherwise the plant may die.

Tea grows quite slowly, so fertiliser and carbon dioxide supplements will be beneficial for it. An adult plant blooms regularly underwater, producing small white or pink buds that look like candles.

The golden rule for keeping this bucephalandra is stability in everything. Any sudden changes in lighting, feeding, or water parameters can cause “cryptocoryne disease” and lead to complete leaf loss.

The underwater and above-water versions of Teia differ from each other:

  • color (underwater brighter);
  • leaf size (above-water plants are larger);
  • density (underwater thinner).

Water parameters for ideal maintenance

When growing this bucephalandra, you can use the following water parameters as a guide:

  • high temperature – from 22°C to 28°C;
  • neutral acidity – pH from 6.0 to 8.0;
  • soft or medium hardness – from 5 to 15 dH.

Tea will tolerate slight deviations from the recommended values if the changes are gradual.

Do not forget about regular water changes (25%, once a week) and filtration. Bucephalandra does not tolerate suspended solids and sediments well and is prone to algae growth.

Lighting requirements

The ideal option for Teia is diffused light of medium intensity (0.5-0.8 W/l). The duration of daylight hours should be at least 8 hours.

However, the plant can adapt to bright lighting (0.8-1 W/l), but this will require additional care:

  • Careful monitoring of cleanliness (not only bucephalandra will begin to grow, but also harmful algae).
  • Fertilizer application (bright light stimulates growth, so tea will need extra nutrition).

Requirements for soil, nutrient substrate

Tea can be planted both in the ground and on various surfaces (stones, lava, driftwood):

  • Planting on the surface: the plant should be secured with fishing line or thread to the selected surface and then left undisturbed for about 15-20 days. During this time, it will take root.
  • Planting in the ground: it is important to avoid deep rooting, otherwise they will begin to rot. The rhizome needs sufficient aeration.

A nutrient substrate is not required when planting Teya, but if desired, it can be placed in a layer 1-2 cm below the soil.

Fertilizer requirements

Tea grows quite slowly, so it does not need intensive feeding.

However, periodic use of carbon dioxide (CO2) and mineral fertilizers:

  • will stimulate growth;
  • will make the color of the leaves more saturated;
  • will allow weak and young plants to take root faster;
  • will support the plant during flowering;
  • will help Teya cope with bright lighting.

In addition, fertilizers added to the water or under the roots will be the main source of nutrition for bucephalandra growing on driftwood or lava (without soil).

CO2 must be supplied at a rate of 20-30 mg/l.

Propagation and growth

Tea propagates vegetatively, by root division:

  • The resulting “daughter” should be planted in the soil without deepening it, or attached to the surface with glue, fishing line, or thread.
  • A small segment is separated from an adult plant by cutting the rhizome with a knife or scissors.

Some aquarists advise initially planting the “daughter” in the ground so that the root system forms faster, and only then transferring it to the surface.

To sum up, everything is simple with Bucephalandra teya: it does not require super conditions, but it greatly appreciates consistency. This is not a plant that will tolerate sudden changes or a long aquarium start-up period. Its beauty will unfold in a stable, mature system.

So, the main secret to success is not to chase after ideal water parameters, but to provide a stable environment. A constant temperature, regular but not excessive water changes, good filtration, and lighting are what it really needs.

If you are willing to be patient and give it time to adapt, Bucephalandra teya will become a real long-liver in your aquarium. It will repay you for your stability with slow but steady growth and an incredible play of color and texture on its leaves.
