Farmina cat food

It’s vital for your cat’s health and happiness to feed them the proper food. Farmina cat food stands out from the competition due to its dedication to using high-quality ingredients and providing a balanced diet. Farmina strives to provide meals that meet the unique needs of feline friends by emphasizing natural ingredients.

With its range of formulas, Farmina guarantees that every cat, from active kittens to well-adjusted adults, will find something they like. They frequently use a lot of protein in their recipes, which is important for preserving energy and muscle mass. Moreover, a lot of formulas are grain-free, which is advantageous for sensitive cats.

This post will discuss the salient characteristics of Farmina cat food, its different product lines, and the reasons why many cat owners find it to be their best option. You can choose the best diet for your furry friend by being aware of what Farmina has to offer.

General information about the manufacturer of Farmina food

Pet food is made in factories owned by Farmina Pet Food in Italy, Brazil, and Serbia. The absence of potentially harmful additives and adherence to the declared ingredient list and nutrient proportions are ensured by foreign production. Dog diets are also produced by the company. Furthermore, the company has created the vitamin complex known as "Vit-Active."

Every food packaging bears the company’s logo.

Detailed characteristics of Farmina food

Farmina cuisine in general is hard to describe because the lines are so dissimilar from one another. However, it is reasonable to note that every diet series either significantly outperforms or stands out when compared to their compositional counterparts. One common drawback is that there isn’t any wet food at all. For owners of sick cats or pets who don’t follow the drinking regimen, this could be crucial. When feeding granulated diets, the latter is more likely to cause urolithiasis because of the oversaturation of minerals in the urine and the resulting stagnation. We shall quickly go over each category because the caliber of the products in the various classes differs substantially.

Record-breaking production of over 50 different food varieties is done under the Farmina brand.

Name of food or series of food Features
Fun Cat The line consists of two types of food. Among the economy class products that can be purchased in Russia, the Farmina brand rations have the most balanced compositions. They contain many ingredients of animal origin. Their quality, of course, is far from ideal, but for the low price this is forgivable.
Matisse The premium line is very modest: it consists of only 5 feeds. One of them is suitable for kittens, another – for castrated and sterilized animals, and the remaining 3 are rations with different flavor additives. The share of the latter is relatively large by the standards of premium feeds, but the main source of protein in any case remains chicken.
Cimiao The series consists of 8-12 varieties of super-premium feeds. The line includes specialized products for kittens, adult and elderly cats. There are preventive feeds for castrated male and sterilized female cats, as well as for representatives of the Persian breed. The latter often have kidney problems, so the presence of a dietary recipe is a significant advantage. There are foods for removing hairballs, for hypersensitive cats, etc. d. For adult cats, there are 2 types of food: with fish and with chicken. However, the first product also contains chicken, so you should not try to replace hypoallergenic diets with it.
VetLife The veterinary line includes products to improve the condition of cats with increased shedding and the formation of hairballs in the gastrointestinal tract, diabetes, inflammatory diseases of the digestive organs, obesity, renal, hepatic and heart failure, idiopathic cystitis, struvite urolithiasis and adverse reactions to food. Additionally, the series includes specialized foods for castrated and sterilized animals. They are more effective, but contain fewer nutrients, so they are most often used either with an increased risk of developing urolithiasis, or during remission.
N&D The widest line of the company. Includes whole grain, low-grain and grain-free varieties of dry food in the holistic category. The latter is additionally divided into standard and diets with quinoa or pumpkin.

Farmina feed composition

It would be incorrect to consider the composition of only one dry food, since the quality of the food lines differs. We selected one sample of each class to get a full impression of the diet series. Let"s start with the economy class, then move on to more balanced products. We will not consider veterinary feeds in detail, because. . When developing their recipe, the manufacturer is limited by the characteristics of unhealthy animals. Suffice it to say that the VetLife line of diets will be an excellent healthy alternative to advertised medicinal brands (Royal Canin, Hill"s, Pro Plan, etc. d.), since the manufacturer tries to bring the composition as close as possible to the standard.

The following names are on Farmina Fun Cat Fish’s ingredient list:

  • chicken meal (25%);
  • wheat flour;
  • corn;
  • fish meal (8%);
  • meat meal (5%);
  • chicken fat;
  • animal protein hydrolysate;
  • sugar beet pulp;
  • sodium chloride.

The disadvantages include the presence of potentially dangerous cereals (wheat and corn), which, however, is the norm for economy class feeds, as well as the introduction of a separate protein hydrolysate instead of whole meat. More significant disadvantages are the presence of harmful additives in the composition. Sodium chloride is salt. Here it acts as a preservative. Cats need some amount of sodium, like all animals, but this proportion is minimal and is already contained in meat and vegetables. Excess salt causes a violation of the water-salt balance. The blood becomes thicker, the load on the heart and kidneys increases. With the accumulation of minerals, the likelihood of developing urolithiasis increases. Also at the end of the list of vitamin and mineral supplements, the manufacturer indicated that the food contains dyes. There is nothing useful in them, they do not increase the attractiveness of the granules, but they can irritate the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary system. This increases the risk of developing pathologies. It would be better if the manufacturer refused to use dyes, even if they are relatively safe.

Enjoyable In the event of unanticipated events, cat food may serve as a temporary substitute for premium food; however, it is not advised to keep your pet on it for longer than one to two months.

It’s also disturbing that, despite the dish’s name suggesting otherwise, fish is only used as a flavoring ingredient. One spot is occupied by chicken meal. However, you cannot expect economy class food to have a hypoallergenic composition or a high salmon content. There’s a slight improvement in the wool and skin quality and some cats become more interested when fish is added, but overall this line of feeds doesn’t differ much from one another.

A lot of animal ingredients are found in feed. Up to 38% of it is made of meat flour. And this is without accounting for the hydrolyzate of fat and proteins, of which the necessary addition along with vitamins and minerals is the latter, the percentage of which is not specified. Fun Cat only mentions the economy class, but the majority of premium feeds are unable to claim an indicator comparable to this one. Even pulp sugar beets, a preventive supplement, are included in the mixture. It is not particularly remarkable, but it aids in intestine cleaning and digestion regulation.

Since the dish only contains flour instead of meat in this instance, the word "meat" in the name appears to be a marketing ploy.

Despite the advantages, I can not recommend using Fun Cat food on an ongoing basis. Once my brother, deceived by the high content of animal ingredients, began to give his cat Fun Cat. As a result, after six months, they became regular visitors to veterinary clinics: the cat was found to have several problems at once. First of all, this is a deficiency of fat, because in the stern it is only 10%. The fur began to fall out more, the skin began to peel. There were minor problems with the pancreas, which were resolved by switching to grain-free Farmina recipes. In addition, the animal"s digestion worsened. He was bothered by vomiting, constipation and diarrhea appeared alternately. I associate this with the use of low-quality raw materials in the production of feed. The ash content of the diet is a record 10%. Usually, such an indicator is observed either in holistic or in economy class feeds, which contain offal, bones and other waste. The latter contain many minerals and little protein, and also partially burn during processing, hence the high ash content.

The following names are listed among the ingredients of Matisse Salmon & Tuna:

  • dehydrated fish (salmon 10%, tuna 10%);
  • rice (20%);
  • dehydrated chicken meat;
  • corn;
  • chicken fat;
  • animal protein hydrolysate;
  • sugar beet pulp;
  • fish oil;
  • vegetable oil;
  • corn gluten;
  • dehydrated whole eggs;
  • sodium chloride;
  • potassium chloride;
  • dehydrated calcium sulfate;
  • dry brewer"s yeast.

The advantages of the food include a good meat content. Only 20% of fish in it, but there is also chicken. The manufacturer indicates protein sources not in fresh, but in dehydrated form. This is a more accurate indicator, since the water from the meat has already evaporated. The mass fraction of fresh ingredients can decrease by 4-5 times due to the removal of liquid during heat treatment. There are about the same amount of cereals as meat, and for the premium class this is a good indicator. In addition, the food contains dehydrated whole eggs, which are well absorbed by cats. The composition includes several preventive additives. Fish oil improves the appearance of wool and skin. Brewer"s yeast contains many B vitamins. Vitamin and mineral composition is well balanced. Calcium in the feed is 0.98%, and phosphorus – 0.85%. This is a borderline indicator, but such a low concentration reduces the likelihood of developing urolithiasis.

The food’s actual inclusion of the additives listed on the packaging is praiseworthy.

The disadvantages are about the same as those of economy class food. At first glance, it may seem that there are a lot of meat ingredients, but it is necessary to take into account their quality. The manufacturer specifies the type of fish in brackets, t. e. may contain unspecified additives. The wording "tuna" and "salmon" indicate that not pure meat was used, but at least whole carcasses with scales, fins, internal organs, etc. d. This is the best case. At worst, the ingredient may be a mixture of low-quality offal. The manufacturer compensates for the lack of meat components by adding protein hydrolysate, but meat is still preferable, t. k. it is better absorbed and additionally contains vitamins and minerals. In addition, the composition contains corn and other grains as a cheap filler, but for the premium class this is normal.

The following names are included in Cimiao Kitten’s component list:

  • dehydrated chicken meat (34%);
  • chicken fat;
  • rice (12%);
  • corn (12%);
  • dehydrated fish (6%);
  • dehydrated whole eggs (4%);
  • animal protein hydrolysate;
  • corn gluten;
  • flaxseed;
  • pea fiber;
  • sugar beet pulp;
  • fish oil;
  • vegetable oil;
  • dry brewer"s yeast;
  • fructooligosaccharides (0.5%);
  • mannanoligosaccharides (0.5%);
  • potassium chloride;
  • sodium chloride;
  • calcium sulfate;
  • sodium phosphate.

This is a rather mediocre composition for the super-premium class. The manufacturer uses more meat without extraneous additives, compared to previous products, although questionable components are still present. For example, dehydrated fish. Neither the type of fish nor the type of tissue is specified. In general, the content of ingredients of animal origin exceeds 50% excluding liquid, but the composition still requires the addition of protein hydrolysate. Significant disadvantages include the presence of corn, which is divided into 2 components: whole grains and gluten. It is preferable to use hypoallergenic cereals with slow carbohydrates: oats, barley, etc. d. It would also be nice if the manufacturer replaced regular rice with brown rice. Many manufacturers of feeds in this category do this.

The super-premium line is not the most popular; in fact, it is mediocre in its category and even falls behind some competitors.

The following names are included in the list of N&D Cat Chicken& Pomegranate Kitten’s components:

  • fresh boneless chicken meat (30%);
  • dehydrated chicken meat (28%);
  • potatoes;
  • chicken fat;
  • dehydrated whole eggs;
  • fresh herring;
  • dehydrated herring;
  • fish oil;
  • hydrolyzed animal proteins;
  • pea fiber;
  • dried carrots;
  • dried alfalfa;
  • inulin;
  • fructooligosaccharides;
  • mannanoligosaccharides;
  • pomegranate powder (0.5%);
  • dehydrated apples;
  • spinach powder;
  • plantain (0.3%);
  • blackcurrant powder;
  • dehydrated sweet orange;
  • blueberry powder;
  • sodium chloride;
  • dry brewer"s yeast;
  • turmeric root (0.2%);
  • glucosamine;
  • chondroitin sulfate;
  • calendula extract (source of lutein).

The composition is close to the natural menu of animals. There are several types of meat, eggs and herbal preventive supplements. There are quite a lot of the latter: prebiotics (inulin, fructooligosaccharides, mannanoligosaccharides, etc. .) support natural microflora, fruits and berries regulate the acidity of urine and prevent the appearance of kidney stones, chondroitin and glucosamine improve the condition of the joint. The overall picture is slightly marred by the presence of potatoes in third place: it contains virtually no useful substances and is a cheapening filler. It is not entirely clear why sodium chloride is added to the composition, since the food is preserved with a mixture of tocopherols and rosemary. In general, the food is better than mediocre, since there is still a lot of meat, but I would like the manufacturer to do without hydrolyzate.

Farmina offers the largest selection of holistic products, but the price is significantly impacted by the use of exotic ingredients.

Is it worth switching a cat to Farmina N&D or super premium food? I can only advise trying and looking for a suitable diet. Of course, if a cat eats Orijen food and has no health problems, then it is better to leave everything as is. But when transferring from less protein holistic or lower-class diets, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the animal. I have been feeding my cat with Farmina N&D products for over a year now, she has no negative reactions, but some owners complain about deterioration of their pets" health. Most often, negative consequences affect the gastrointestinal tract. If persistent diarrhea occurs, it is strongly recommended to postpone the transition or consider other foods: sometimes even the closest to the natural diet products are not suitable for some cats. This depends not only on the balance of the recipe, but also on individual characteristics.

Cost and availability of Farmina foods

Farmina food products are available online. Retail establishments do not always carry the brand’s merchandise. The type and class of food determines how much it costs. One kilogram of food in the economy class typically costs 200 rubles, while meals in the premium, super, and holistic classes cost 350–400, 400–500, and 600–1200 rubles, respectively.
