Tylomelania orange rabbit snail – a long-eared snail with a wolf’s appetite

Imagine an aquarium snail, but not just a simple gray worker, but a real exotic beauty. Tilomelania orange rabbit is a bright and funny creature that is impossible to miss. Its rich orange or golden color immediately catches the eye, and its funny long “ears” — sensitive tentacles — make it look like a miniature rabbit.

However, behind its cute appearance lies a very energetic and voracious character. This snail can safely be called a “wolf in sheep's clothing,” but only in the world of aquariums. It has a truly heroic appetite and incredible activity, constantly on the move in search of food.

Keeping this pet is exciting, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. Its love of food can be a problem for delicate aquarium plants, and its demanding water quality requirements mean that owners need to be attentive. Let's take a closer look at this amazing creature to understand how to befriend this hungry but charismatic “orange rabbit.”

Habitat

In nature, the orange rabbit snail lives only on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, which resembles a flower with four petals. Most of the mollusks are found in Lake Malili (a system of five reservoirs connected by rivers) and Lake Poso.

The island of Sulawesi is located on the equator. The lakes are mainly surrounded by humid tropical forest, with many leaves and branches falling from the trees. In some parts of the reservoir, the bottom is rocky, in others it is sandy and muddy.

Snail characteristics

The snail has a straightened spiral shell. In some subspecies, it is smooth, in others, it has spikes and curls.

The body attracts attention with its long horns, reminiscent of rabbit ears, and an elongated mouth similar to a trunk. Because of the latter feature, the mollusk is sometimes called an elephant snail.

This species of tilomelania is distinguished by a wide variety of colors. For example, the body can have the following colors:

The shell is black or dark brown, sometimes with a white border.

Snails living in areas with rocky bottoms are distinguished by their bright and variegated coloration. There are many large specimens among them, and their behavior is distinctly territorial.

Tilomelania from areas with sandy-muddy bottoms are predominantly monotonous in color. They are smaller and calmer than their “rocky” counterparts.

Orange rabbits are dioecious, but males and females are virtually indistinguishable in appearance.

The optimal volume of the aquarium is 20-30 liters. The container is equipped with a lid—snails like to climb out to admire the surroundings.

Sand or loam is laid on the bottom. A layer of leaves is spread on top, and a couple of small snags and stones are placed. The latter imitate the rocky soil native to tilomelania.

Lighting should be dim (0.3-0.4 W/l). If you want to make it brighter, place caves and other shelters in the aquarium: here the snails will be able to rest from the intense light.

Plants with long leaves that reach the water surface are planted in the tank. They create shade, in which orange rabbits feel most comfortable.

The vegetation should not be too dense – snails need enough free space.

Water

These guests from the equator love warm water—the optimal temperature is +28°C. The environment must be clean—filtration and powerful aeration are essential. The latter ensures the removal of carbon dioxide and thus helps to achieve the high pH level that snails need.

Replace 1/3 of the water with fresh water every week. It is important to maintain the hardness within the specified limits: at low levels, the snails' shells soften, and at high levels, they hibernate.

Copper must not be allowed to enter the aquarium, as it is toxic to mollusks. This element is present in some medicines and fish feed. When purchasing such products, check the composition and, if you find compounds with copper, replace them with an analogue.

Diet

Tilomelania are omnivorous. They are fed:

In addition, orange rabbits actively consume fish waste products and uneaten food, dead plant parts, and biofilm; they may eat dead fish. In this way, they keep the walls and bottom of the aquarium clean.

It is impossible to overfeed tilomelania – they are always hungry. They are fed several times a day, and if the rabbits are left hungry, they will eat the plants and leave only the stems. Only moss and cladophora, as well as floating species that are difficult for mollusks to reach, are safe from this fate.

Use sinking food. Snails mainly search for food at the bottom and, being absorbed in this process, may even burrow into the ground.

Breeding

No special conditions or stimulation are required for breeding. All that is needed is a comfortable environment.

Female orange rabbits are viviparous. Every 3-4 weeks, they give birth to 1-2 fully formed offspring. However, they are still in the egg, from which they hatch immediately.

Compatibility

Orange rabbits feel best in a species aquarium. This option eliminates conflicts and feeding problems.

Careful selection of neighbors is required for breeding in a community aquarium. Suitable neighbors include:

  • compact heat-loving fish — peciliids, tetras, catfish, neons, etc.
  • melania snails, ampullaria, devil's thorns;
  • shrimps from the island of Sulawesi – Carolina spongicola, cardinal, harlequin, etc.

Large aggressive fish should not be allowed near these snails.

The orange rabbit snail is a bright and unusual creature for an aquarium, which immediately attracts attention with its color and shape: a variegated shell, light antennae, like ears, and lively behavior. Despite its cute appearance, it has a reputation as a voracious cleaner—it sweeps algae off glass, rocks, and plants without stopping for a minute. However, the rabbit snail is not strictly vegetarian: if there is not enough food, it may feast on soft plant leaves or fish food leftovers. Overall, it is a useful helper in the aquarium, but it is still necessary to monitor the balance.

Advice for owners

  1. When placed in a new environment, an adult snail hides in its shell and can stay there for several days without coming out. To lure your pet out, place some tasty-smelling food around it, such as a cucumber or zucchini.
  2. Immediately after being placed in the aquarium, tilomelania feed more actively than usual. Increase the frequency of feeding.
  3. Living up to their name, orange rabbits readily mate with snails of other species. Remove other mollusks if you want to breed a pure breed.

As you can see, the orange rabbit snail is not just a bright inhabitant of the aquarium. It is a real star with character. Its unusual appearance, resembling a rabbit with horns, instantly attracts attention.

But behind this cute mask hides a tireless worker with an excellent appetite. This snail will not sit in one place all day. It is constantly on the move, exploring every corner in search of food and helping to keep the tank clean.

If you are ready to provide it with a spacious aquarium with suitable water and sufficient food, it will become a wonderful pet. You will get not only a beautiful, but also a very active, interesting to watch snail that will definitely not let you get bored.
