The rock lizard – the most agile and nimble lizard of the Caucasus

The Caucasus Mountains are home to many amazing creatures, but among them there is one true champion of agility and speed. It is the rock lizard, a small reptile that is easily recognizable by its bright, sometimes almost emerald-colored belly. If you have ever walked along rocky slopes, you have probably seen it darting by like a flash of color.

What makes it so special? It is all about its perfect adaptation to the harsh mountain landscape. Her strong paws with tenacious toes allow her to run on almost vertical cliffs and jump from rock to rock with incredible precision. There are no obstacles for her — any cliff becomes a track for a dizzying stunt.

Watching this lizard is a real pleasure. It will freeze, basking in the sun, then in a split second hide in the nearest crevice at the slightest sign of danger. Its movements are so swift and precise that it seems as if it is not running, but simply disappearing in one place and reappearing in another. This is its unique skill for survival among the rocks and the bright Caucasian sun.

Habitat, locations, and living conditions

The rock lizard's habitat covers the Krasnodar and Stavropol regions, the mountain ranges of the Caucasus, and the southern coast of Crimea. Populations of lizards are found in Abkhazia, Georgia, and Turkey. These reptiles prefer dry, rocky places and are often found near mountain roads and trails.

These are very curious animals. If a rock lizard notices a person or any moving object, it will move towards it in order to get a better look at its opponent. If it is a potential threat, the lizard quickly runs away and never freezes in place. If there is shelter nearby, they immediately hide in it. Usually, crevices in rocks, depressions between stones, or tree roots serve as shelters.

Rock lizard

The rock lizard is an excellent runner, including on vertical slopes. It can move both head up and head down. If necessary, the reptile can jump over 1 meter. This lizard is aided by its long legs and strong tail. Some species of rock lizards are excellent swimmers and can jumping in water from a potential threat.

Cornered, the lizard fights back fiercely. It tries to grab its opponent with its sharp claws. If the enemy is much larger, it resorts to a technique characteristic of most lizards and sheds its tail. These are territorial animals: each male has its own territory, which it will never allow a rival to enter.

The first lizards wake up after hibernation around the end of March, when the air temperature rises to +11 degrees. The peak of reptile activity in spring is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. In summer, lizards come out of their hiding places at 8 a.m. and hide for the night after 5-6 p.m. Much depends on the habitat of the lizards.

For example, in some regions of Crimea, rock lizards can be found even in winter during the thaw. The hibernation period begins in October.

Appearance

The lizard's body length is 25-30 centimeters, with most of it being the tail:

  • body – body length 6-8 cm. Flattened shape;
  • head – pointed shape, flattened in the vertical plane;
  • legs – long with special calluses that allow them to cling to rocks;
  • claws – long, sharp, adapted for climbing.

Rock lizards are quite nimble and fast, they jump well and move along vertical surfaces. Their flattened body allows them to fit into any crevice, even the smallest ones.

The coloration of lizards varies from green to sandy or brown. A dark or brown stripe runs along the back. There are dark patterns on the sides. The color of the belly depends on the species and can range from pink to rich green.

Please note! Visually, males and females are almost indistinguishable from each other. The only difference is their coloration. Females have more faded coloring.

Housing conditions, care

Rock lizards thrive in home terrariums. They can be kept alone or in groups. However, it is important to remember that two males will never get along and will constantly fight, while a group of 2-3 females and 1 male will not cause any trouble. These are fairly undemanding reptiles, so even a beginner can keep them.

Terrarium

A horizontal terrarium is used to keep rock lizards. One individual requires a tank measuring 80*40*40 cm. It is very important that there is a lid on top that the lizard cannot escape through. At the same time, the lid should not prevent proper air circulation.

A mixture of sand and gravel can be used as substrate. You can also lay out stones, placing the largest one under the lamp so that the lizard can bask on it. Driftwood and live plants planted in pots can be used for decoration. Another advantage of live plants is that they maintain optimal humidity levels.

Spiny-Tailed Lizard

If you don't want to bother with live plants, you can do without them altogether or replace them with artificial ones.

Lighting and heating

Be sure to use high-quality heating and lighting. ultraviolet lamps. The length of daylight hours should be the same as in nature – 10-12 hours. Mirrored incandescent lamps with a power of about 2 watts are ideal for this purpose. At the point of maximum heating, the temperature should reach +30 degrees, and in the cold corner +26.

Additionally, use special heating mats, which are installed under the terrarium. At night, the temperature should drop by 4-5 degrees.

Humidity

A mandatory attribute of the terrarium should be water dispenser. It should not be too deep, as some lizards like to use it as a pool. Also, every 2-3 days, spray the interior with a spray bottle. The lizards themselves can be bathed in warm water no more than once a week. This procedure will be most beneficial during the molting period.

Hygiene

Food residues must be removed from the terrarium and the drinking bowl washed daily. The soil and glass should be cleaned as they become dirty. Decorations and accessories should be washed once a week using safe solutions. Once every 3-4 weeks, the terrarium should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

Important! Only specialized products can be used to disinfect the terrarium. Under no circumstances should chlorine and aggressive solutions, soda, and other untested preparations be used.

Hibernation

Rock lizards need to hibernate. This usually takes place in January. For hibernation, use a separate small container. Sand and soil are placed on the bottom. The temperature during hibernation should be +8 degrees. Preparation should be gradual, and the duration of hibernation itself can be 2-2.5 months. The transition out of hibernation is also gradual.

Diet

Rock lizards are predators. Their diet consists mainly of invertebrates that live in a specific region.

At home, you can feed reptiles:

  • banana crickets;
  • marble cockroaches;
  • mealworms, etc.

Note: It is very important that the lizard's diet is varied. You cannot feed it only worms or cockroaches all the time.

To avoid vitamin and mineral deficiencies, vitamin supplements and calcium powder should be used, which can be sprinkled directly onto food. To ensure that the lizard does not lose its hunting skills, it is occasionally fed live cockroaches. The diet can also be varied with grated carrots.

The rock lizard is a true champion of agility among the reptiles of the Caucasus. It jumps lightning fast across rocks, dodges predators, and literally “sticks” to narrow crevices, as if glued to the rocks. Its agility is especially noticeable on open slopes, where every movement is calculated to the fraction of a second. Thanks to its excellent coordination, keen eyesight, and endurance, it feels right at home where other lizards would never dream of going.

Reproduction

The breeding season for rock lizards begins 2-3 weeks after they wake up from hibernation. During this period, males behave particularly aggressively and often engage in violent fights. The winner is the one who forces the opponent to retreat.

Three to four weeks after mating, the female lays three to eight eggs. Eggs may be laid in crevices or between rocks. However, if there is no suitable shelter, the lizard may dig its own burrow in the ground.

Lizard in the wild

After 50-55 days, young lizards hatch. They feed on insects but try to stay away from adults. Usually, rock lizards do not bother each other, but cannibalism is common among some species. These reptiles reach sexual maturity in 2 years.

Insect caught

Some species of rock lizards, such as the Armenian rock lizard, reproduce through parthenogenesis. In simple terms, females do not need males to produce offspring.

Among the most common subspecies are:

Darevskia aghasyani – this species of rock lizard is found exclusively in Armenia.

Darevskia alpina lizards of this species are found in the subalpine meadows of Georgia and Russia. Their color ranges from green to brown. A distinctive feature of young individuals is their bluish-green tail.

Darevskia armeniaca or Armenian lizard – inhabits northwestern Armenia, with small populations found in Georgia and Azerbaijan. Representatives of this species reproduce by parthenogenesis.

Darevskia bendimahiensis – an unusual species found in Turkey. The population consists exclusively of females, which lay two eggs each.

Darevskia brauneri or Brauner's lizard – can be found in both Georgia and Russia. During the breeding season, the bellies of these lizards turn blue.

Darevskia caspica – this species of rock lizard is found exclusively in Iran.

Darevskia dahli or Dalia's lizard – an endemic species of the Caucasus. These lizards are listed in the Red Book due to a rapid decline in population.

Diseases and health maintenance

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Rock lizards are quite healthy. Most problems arise due to the fault of the owners themselves and improper care.

Common diseases include:

  • rickets or hypovitaminosis D – during the course of the disease, there is a disruption in the formation of cartilage and bone tissue. Various growths may form on the animal's body, and there is also a decrease in appetite and exhaustion;
  • ticks – you can get infected from reptiles that have not undergone keratinization, as well as from bedding or accessories. With a large accumulation of mites on the body, anemia develops. Treatment is selected individually;
  • geotrichosis — ekaterina Alekseeva I became acquainted with the world of terrariums as a child.
  • to diversify your pet's diet, you can feed it 1-2 times a month artificial mats are a good choice. There should be two mats: while one is in use, the other is being cleaned.

Substrate

Keeled grass snakes belong to the tree species. an excellent substrate for keeled grass snakes is. Close-up

Coconut fiber or aspen sawdust

Since keeled grass snakes are a tree species, the terrarium must be supplemented with plants with dense foliage. The thickness of the branches for climbing should be commensurate with the thickness of the snake itself. Approximately half of the terrarium's volume should be occupied by foliage.

It would be a good idea to add some dry leaves to the soil. To rid them of parasites, place them in the freezer overnight.

  1. Life hack artificial plants are suitable for keeled grass snakes. They are much easier to care for than live plants.. Decor
  2. Grass snakes get along well in groups. The size of the terrarium for several snakes can be determined as follows: 60x40x45 cm for the first snake, plus 30 cm² for each subsequent individual.
  3. Please note! You can use paper towels or newspapers instead of bedding, but they will make the terrarium look less attractive.
  4. The tank should be made of glass or wood with glass walls. A plastic container is not suitable for this species.

Shelters

Mouse skins! Rock lizards are quite unpretentious and thrive in home terrariums. They are distinguished by their mobility and curiosity. They can be wonderful pets for both experienced owners and beginners.

The rock lizard rightfully deserves the title of the most agile acrobat among Caucasian lizards. Its ability to move lightning fast across almost vertical rocks and stones is not just a skill, but a true art of survival, honed by nature.

Watching her in her natural environment is a real pleasure. It demonstrates incredible coordination and fearlessness, jumping on steep cliffs where no predator would dare to climb. This agility makes it elusive and allows it to live peacefully in harsh mountain conditions.

So if you happen to find yourself in the Caucasus Mountains, take a closer look at the scree slopes and rocks. You may be lucky enough to see this nimble and graceful creature, a true rock climbing champion in the world of lizards.
