Pipefish (Freshwater Garfish)

Imagine a fish that looks like it came straight out of a science fiction novel. Its long, arrow-like body and elongated jaws, resembling a beak, make it unlike the familiar inhabitants of our rivers. This is a freshwater sargan, often referred to simply as a needlefish.

Despite its slightly intimidating appearance, this fish is completely harmless to humans. Its “beak” is studded with small teeth and is perfectly suited for hunting small prey such as fry and insects. Watching the sargan in the water is a real pleasure; it moves with incredible grace and speed.

This rarity can be found in the basins of the Black, Azov, and Caspian Seas, where the river water is slightly brackish. It enters estuaries, lower reaches of rivers, and canals, remaining an unusual and memorable catch for many fishermen, because catching it is already a small victory.

The needlefish is a long, thin inhabitant of freshwater bodies, more like algae than a normal fish. It lives in quiet rivers and lakes, hiding among plants and hardly moving so as not to give itself away. Thanks to its unusual appearance and slowness, it is well camouflaged from predators and itself lurks unnoticed for small prey. Despite its strange appearance, it is a real fish, not something between an animal and a plant — nature simply made it to match its hiding place.

Habitat in nature

The natural habitat of the freshwater barbel is the water bodies of Southeast Asia, from western India to the coast of Thailand. At one time, the fish were transported to the Hawaiian Islands, where they took root and spread.

In the wild, these fish prefer to inhabit swamps and large and small rivers shaded by dense coastal vegetation.

Description

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

The needlefish is large, growing up to 30-35 cm in aquarium conditions. Aquarists like the fish for its appearance in adulthood. The main feature in the description of the fish's appearance is its unusual, elongated and thin, needle-like body. In cross-section, the body is oval.

External characteristics:

  • Elongated flattened jaws with many small, sharp teeth;
  • The dorsal and anal fins are located close to the tail, one directly below the other.
  • The pectoral and pelvic fins are barely noticeable.
  • Greenish-gray in color, with a dark stripe running along the body.

Care and maintenance

Since the sargan is a large fish, a spacious tank should be selected for it. A school of 3-4 individuals requires at least 500 liters, and the height of the aquarium should be at least 30 cm. From the appearance of the needlefish, it is clear that it is nimble, moves rapidly, and can jump out of the water, so the tank must have a lid.

Water parameters

The following water parameters are comfortable for freshwater pipefish:

  • Temperature – 23-28°C;
  • Acidity – 6.5-7.5 pH;
  • Hardness – 5-10 dH.

The current should not be intense. However, high-quality filtration is essential. Like other predatory aquarium fish, the sargan must live in clean, oxygen-rich water. Do not use filter models that create strong water movement in the aquarium.

The aquarium water is changed weekly by 30% of the volume. The substrate and decorative items are regularly siphoned to clean them of accumulated organic matter.

Be careful when cleaning the aquarium, as frightened fish can bite your hand with their sharp teeth.

Lighting

Aquarium pipefish like dim light. But if floating vegetation is used for shading, the lighting can be slightly increased.

Vegetation

Plants are planted along the aquarium walls, leaving space in the middle of the tank for fish to swim. It is advisable to supplement the green decor with floating vegetation that creates partial shade. The best option for decorating an aquarium is Javanese moss.

Substrate

Any substrate can be chosen, but fine sand is preferable.

Decor

Aquarists can choose the decor according to their taste. However, it is important to provide plenty of hiding places when setting up the tank: driftwood, caves, piles of stones, and pots.

Feeding

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

In nature, pipefish hunt small fish and insects, lying in wait for their prey and sucking it in with their long, narrow mouths from a distance of up to 4 cm. At home, adult fish are fed fish fillets, mussels, shrimp, earthworms, and insects. For young fish, finely chopped worms and shrimp are suitable food.

Behavior and compatibility

It is advisable to keep fish in a school of 3-4 individuals. Although the sargan is a predator, it is known for its sociable, detached, and non-confrontational behavior.

Intraspecific and interspecific compatibility is ideal. Sargan easily shares its territory with large and calm species: catfish, non-aggressive cichlids. It is not recommended to place needlefish with small, nimble, and timid fish, as it will consider them prey and begin to hunt them.

Sexual differences

Sexual differences in representatives of the species are not very pronounced. But there is a way to determine the sex: males have black stripes on their dorsal and anal fins. Also, during spawning, males develop a small growth on the back of their heads, their jaws become reddish, and their bellies become yellowish.

Breeding and reproduction

Breeding aquarium fish is difficult, but possible. In natural conditions, sticklebacks spawn between late spring and early autumn, i.e. during the rainy season. Precipitation changes the chemical composition of the water and makes it colder. It is difficult to recreate such conditions in an aquarium, but it is possible to try.

The sargan reaches sexual maturity at one year of age. To stimulate reproduction, you will have to change the water daily, imitating precipitation, and feed the fish abundantly with live food. Needlefish spawn in the morning, with the female attaching thin strands of roe, up to 2 cm long, to underwater vegetation.

The fry hatch after 8-10 days. In the first days of life, they feed on live dust. Older individuals are capable of devouring their slower-growing siblings.

The stickleback, or freshwater sargan, is one of the most amazing and ancient inhabitants of our rivers and lakes. Encountering it is a real stroke of luck, as it hides masterfully among algae, remaining almost invisible to predators and humans.

Its unusual appearance and habits are living proof of how diverse and inventive nature can be. This fish seems to transport us to a world where time flows more slowly, reminding us of the ancient stages of evolution.

If you are lucky enough to see a barbel in its natural habitat, observe it from a distance so as not to disturb it. Preserving such unique species is our common task, as they are an integral and very fragile part of aquatic ecosystems.
