The classic blue form of pindani is most common in aquariums. But there are other color variations, such as snow-white or with yellowish fins. All of them are color morphs of the same fish, which can even live together.

Keeping these beauties is not too difficult, but it is important to understand their nature. Like all Malawi cichlids, they like hard water and need a spacious aquarium with plenty of rock shelters. These are territorial fish, so choosing the right neighbors and avoiding overcrowding will ensure peace in your underwater world.

Pseudotropheus pindani is a bright and active cichlid from Lake Malawi, often chosen by aquarists for its rich blue color and interesting behavior. These fish are small but have a pronounced character: they can be territorial, especially the males, so it is important to keep them in groups with a predominance of females and provide the aquarium with shelters made of stones. Pindani are unpretentious in their diet, but they feel better on a plant-based diet, and clean, oxygen-rich water is the key to their health. With proper care, they live a long time, decorating the aquarium with their brightness and activity.

Habitat

Pseudotropheus pindani is a popular aquarium fish. In its natural environment, it is found only in Lake Malawi, located in several African countries. This body of water is of tectonic origin, making it an ideal habitat for various species of cichlids.

Pseudotropheus pindani lives mainly in the upper layers of the water column. It prefers places with various rock formations where there are many crevices. The latter are necessary for the fish as shelter. They also find live food here, which supplements their diet, 70% of which consists of plant-based food.

Fish characteristics

Pseudotropheus pindani is a medium-sized fish. The body length of adult specimens is no more than 12 cm, which is typical for most other cichlids. Males are slightly larger than females (by about 2 cm), which makes it easy to find them in a school. Pseudotropheus pindani prefer to live in small groups. Most often, these groups consist of only one male and 3-5 females.

The main advantage of representatives of this species is their bright blue body color. It is characteristic of individuals of both sexes, regardless of age and period of activity. In some cases, purple hues may appear on the body of adult fish. They indicate that the Pseudotropheus pindani is very frightened, which can lead to various health problems.

The fins of males and females are blue, and the tips of some rays are black. Males have small orange spots on their anal fins, which are absent in their female counterparts.

Maintenance

Pseudotropheus pindani should live in spacious aquariums where they have complete freedom of movement. For this reason, it is recommended to choose a tank with a volume of at least 160 liters for these fish. This will be sufficient for a male to live comfortably with 3-5 females.

Sand or small pebbles should be poured onto the bottom of the aquarium. They will serve as an optimal base for laying stones and various decorative elements that can create many secluded places for fish. It would also be useful to have driftwood and artificially created caves.

Pseudotropheus pindani only uses vegetation as food. Therefore, only aquatic fauna with hard leaves can be placed in the aquarium. Their fish will not be able to damage them with their sharp teeth.

Pseudotropheus pindani can jump out of the water, so the aquarium must be equipped with a lid.

Pseudotropheus pindani are demanding in terms of water quality and characteristics. Because of this, aquarium owners need to purchase a high-quality external filter, as well as a powerful compressor and thermostat. The latter is necessary to maintain the optimal temperature found in shallow waters where these cichlids live.

As a mandatory procedure in the aquarium, a partial water change of 25-30% is required. This is done once every 6-7 days. Also, periodically siphon the soil to remove food debris and waste products from the aquarium.

Pseudotropheus pindani prefers water with an acidity level of 7.5-8.8 pH.

Pseudotropheus pindani is a shallow-water inhabitant, which is why its lighting requirements are significantly higher than those of many other cichlids. Therefore, to ensure that the fish do not experience a lack of light, the aquarium should be placed near a window. On cloudy days and during the dark hours of the day, you will need to use various lighting devices.

Most of the diet of Pseudotropheus pindani consists of plant food. To obtain it, the fish use their sharp teeth to bite off pieces of aquatic plant leaves or scrape various green growths off rocks. On average, plant food makes up 70% of the diet of Pseudotropheus pindani. The remaining 30% is protein-rich food (e.g., insect larvae, small mollusks, and crustaceans).

Pseudotropheus pindani cannot control the amount of food it consumes on its own. Therefore, it is necessary to pour a precisely measured amount of food into the aquarium, which will not lead to overeating.

Breeding

Breeding Pseudotropheus pindani at home is both simple and difficult. The simplicity lies in minimal human intervention in the process. At the same time, the fish need ideal conditions for reproduction, without which it can take a very long time for spawning to begin.

Achieving the optimal temperature, hardness, and acidity of the water is quite difficult, which creates certain difficulties even for experienced aquarists.

The reproduction process begins with the selection of a suitable place for laying eggs. This task is performed by the male. He carefully cleans and prepares a specific area of the bottom, after which he waits for the arrival of a female ready to mate. After choosing the most suitable female from several individuals, he lets her into the created “dwelling” and drives the others away.

Next, the female lays eggs, and the male fertilizes them. After that, the male goes to patrol the surrounding area, and his partner puts the eggs in her mouth. The future fry stay there for about a month. During this time, the female practically does not leave her shelter and does not eat anything. After the specified time, the fry appear, fully adapted to independent life.

Subspecies

Pseudotropheus pindani belongs to the Mbuna group of the Cichlidae family. It includes several dozen species of cichlids that share common external characteristics and behavioral traits. All of them can be called relatives of the fish in question. This cichlid also has its own subspecies. It is an albino form of Pseudotropheus pindani, which is quite rare.

Due to the white color of its scales, it is called the “Snow Prince” (Pseudotropheus socolofi albino).

Compatibility

Although Pseudotropheus pindani is a moderately aggressive fish, it is not recommended to keep it in the same aquarium with peaceful representatives of aquatic fauna. Also, do not combine this species with small fish that could become their lunch. However, it is permissible to place other cichlids from the Mbuna group in an aquarium with Pseudotropheus pindani.

Advice for owners

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

The more an aquarist knows about fish, the easier it is to keep them. In this regard, it is necessary to carefully study all available information and take into account the recommendations of professionals.

Useful recommendations:

  1. Pseudotropheus pindani is prone to overeating. Therefore, it is important not to overfeed it. However, if there is too little food, the fish will develop digestive problems. Hunger will also cause cichlids to search for food in the aquarium (for example, among other aquatic inhabitants).
  2. The female Pseudotropheus pindani carries eggs in her mouth, which means she does not eat for a month. To help her survive this difficult period, aquarists should increase the amount of food they give her a week before spawning. You can also increase the percentage of protein in her diet to 40% of her total food intake.
  3. As soon as the eggs are in the female's mouth, the fish must be protected from stress. To do this, reduce the noise level in the room, remove excessively bright lighting fixtures, and move aggressive neighbors to another aquarium. If this is not done, the female will spit out the eggs and you will have to forget about the appearance of fry.
