Pogostemon octopus. A lush, bushy octopus of aquarium flora

If you are looking for a plant that will turn your aquarium into a real underwater garden, take a look at Pogostemon octopus. Its name speaks for itself: its long, fancifully curved leaves resemble octopus tentacles. This is not a modest bush in the background, but a bright, dynamic accent that immediately catches the eye.

This plant is famous for its lushness and rapid growth under good conditions. In a short time, a few stems can produce dense, openwork thickets of a delicate green or light olive color. The movement of the leaves in the water creates the feeling of a living, breathing composition.

Like many beautiful things, Pogostemon octopus is a little capricious. It likes good lighting, nutritious soil, and additional carbon dioxide supply. But your efforts will be rewarded a hundredfold. A well-groomed plant becomes the pride of the aquarium, its lush “tentacles” creating the perfect shelter for small fish and shrimp.

The main habitat of Pogostemon octopus is the water bodies of Southeast Asia. It has been actively used in aquarium keeping for about 10 years.

Cultivation and care

Pogostemon octopus is quite picky about its living conditions. For this reason, it is not suitable for beginners.

One of the conditions for good acclimatization of Pogostemon is planting the plant in an “old” aquarium, in which a stable ecosystem has already formed.

Immediately after starting an aquarium, the water is usually very unstable, which can be detrimental to Pogostemon octopus.

Depending on the conditions of keeping, the width and color of the leaf plates of Pogostemon octopus change.

Immediately after planting, the plant takes a long time to settle in. On average, this process takes about a month, during which time the pogostemon may not grow and lose almost all of its leaves. After acclimatization, it is recommended to periodically trim the bushes.

This will preserve the beautiful appearance of the plant. Plus, after removing the upper part of the stem, it begins to bush, which gives Pogostemon greater splendor. The cut parts can be used to grow new bushes.

Water parameters for ideal maintenance

To ensure the healthy condition of Pogostemon octopus, it is necessary to maintain stable water conditions in accordance with the following indicators:

  • temperature range: 22-28°C.
  • acid-alkaline balance — 6-7.5.

Pale leaves are an indicator of unfavorable conditions.

  • Water purity is very important for the plant. A quarter of the liquid volume must be replaced every week. It is also necessary to replace the filter in a timely manner and clean the aquarium regularly.

  • Otherwise, the leaf plates will begin to become covered with a coating that hinders gas exchange processes. This will lead to a deterioration in the growth of Pogostemon. In addition, care should be taken to ensure an uninterrupted supply of carbon dioxide.

Lighting requirements

Like many tropical plants native to Southeast Asia, pogostemon requires bright lighting.

It is advisable to choose lamps with a power of 0.5-1 W/l. Fluorescent lamps are best suited as a light source.

The plant should be provided with light for 10-12 hours a day.

With insufficient lighting, the leaves of Pogostemon octopus will become pale and elongated, causing the plant to lose its decorative appearance.

When planting, the plant should be positioned so that the shoots do not shade each other and so that neighboring plants do not create shade.

Requirements for soil and nutrient substrate

Pogostemon octopus has a powerful root system that requires a soil depth of at least 5-6 centimeters. The plant prefers a silted substrate, which is mainly found in “old” aquariums. It takes some of its nutrients from the silt, so pebbles or sand can be used as the main substrate, under which a nutrient substrate can be placed.

The following can be used as a “rich” layer:

  • Tropica Substrate. A nutrient-rich substrate based on peat and clay. Its main feature is that it practically does not change the acidity and hardness of the water in the aquarium. It slowly releases nutrients, providing the plant with nourishment for a long time.

  • Dennerle NutriBasis. A substrate with a high content of chelated iron, clay minerals, and peat will provide Pogostemon with a long-lasting nutrient medium. According to the manufacturer, it is unique in that it does not release excess nutrients, but absorbs them.

Fertilizer requirements

Pogostemon octopus obtains most of its nutrients through its roots. Therefore, it is best to use tableted fertilizers for additional feeding of the plant, or when the nutrient-rich soil begins to deplete and requires immediate replacement.

Pogostemon octopus mainly needs micronutrients, especially iron. You can provide the plant with the necessary nutrients using the following fertilizers:

  • API Root tabs. Tableted fertilizer with a high iron and potassium content. Promotes the growth of aquarium plants. Recommended for use every month.

  • Tetra Crypto. A tablet-form fertilizer rich in micronutrients. It does not contain phosphates and nitrates, which are often present in sufficient quantities in a stable aquarium ecosystem.

Propagation

Pogostemon octopus reproduces vegetatively.

In aquarium conditions, it is recommended to carry out the procedure as follows:

  • cut off the top of the stem or a side shoot at least 10 centimeters long.
  • dig a small hole in the soil and place a fertilizer tablet at the bottom to support the root system.
  • place the cut stem in a hole and cover it with soil without tamping it down.

Pogostemon octopus is a bright and lush aquarium plant that is rightly considered an “octopus” because of its long, twisting, dissected leaves that seem to stretch in all directions. It grows quickly, bushes beautifully, and adds volume and movement to the aquarium, as if everything inside is constantly swaying. Suitable for both the background and middle areas, it looks especially impressive against a light background. With good light and nutrition, it becomes rich green or slightly reddish — and always remains one of the most picturesque aquarium “bushes.”

Variations and forms of the plant

Pogostemon octopus does not have its own artificially bred variations or natural forms found in nature. However, other types of pogostemon have found application in aquarium keeping:

  • Erectus. The leaves are grouped in whorls of 8. The leaf plate reaches a length of up to 4 cm and a width of up to 1 cm. A lush, dense bush can be obtained in 1-3 months under favorable conditions. It requires constant thinning.

  • Pogostemon Helfer. Its leaves also gather in whorls. The bush reaches 10 cm in height and 5 cm in width. It is mainly green in color. Pogostemon Helfer Red is distinguished by its red leaves, which is reflected in the name of the subspecies.

  • Stellatus. Also known as star-shaped, it is characterized by rapid growth and can only be used in large aquariums due to the plant's considerable length. The leaf plates are grouped in whorls of 8, reaching a length of 8-11 mm and a width of up to 5 mm.

  • Kimberly. The bush of this pogostemon can grow up to 25-40 cm in height. It is distinguished by the presence of serrations along the edges of the leaf plate.

Pogostemon octopus is a truly special plant. Its long, twisted leaves, resembling tentacles, give the aquarium a dynamic and picturesque volume. It does not just grow, but creates entire underwater thickets where small fish and shrimp like to hide.

Of course, it will take a little attention for it to reveal its full beauty. Good lighting, CO2 supply, and regular feeding will help it stay bright green and lush. But these efforts are more than rewarded by the sight of a luxurious, flowing bush.

If you want to add depth, movement, and lush greenery to your aquarium, octopus is an excellent choice. This plant is a soloist, capable of becoming the centerpiece of the entire underwater composition and bringing a touch of wild, natural beauty to it.
