The sailfin lizard – a reptile that can run on water

Imagine a lizard that, when in danger, does not dive into the water, but takes off and runs across its surface as if it were asphalt. It sounds like a scene from a science fiction movie, but this is a real skill of an amazing reptile — the sailfin lizard.

For this small creature, which lives in Southeast Asia, water is not an obstacle, but another path to salvation. This unusual talent developed as a result of evolution, allowing the lizard to avoid predators where its relatives would be doomed.

How does it do this? The secret lies in an amazing combination of speed, a special body structure, and the laws of physics. Let's figure out what makes the sailfin lizard a real sprinter on the water's surface.

Range, habitat, and living conditions

Sailfin lizards are found in Southeast Asia. Large populations live on the islands of the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Sulawesi.

This reptile prefers a warm and humid climate. It settles in close proximity to bodies of water: lakes, rivers, swamps, etc. It spends most of its time on the branches of trees and shrubs.

The basis of the lizards' diet is tree fruits, leaves, young shoots, berries. Reptiles prefer worms and aquatic insects as animal food, and sometimes a sailfin lizard can catch a mouse or another reptile.

Hydrosaurus amboinensis

Sailfin lizards are distinguished by their timid nature. At the slightest hint of danger, an adult lizard dives into the water and hides from its predator. Reptiles are excellent swimmers and divers and can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes.

Interesting! Young lizards have the ability to run on water. However, adult reptiles do not have this ability.

During the day, lizards bask on tree branches. They lead a leisurely lifestyle. If the reptile is cold, it spreads the sail, located on the back, thereby increasing the body surface area and consumption of solar heat. These reptiles lead a reclusive lifestyle. When encountering their fellow lizards, they rarely show aggression.

The sailfin lizard is a small reptile that can run on the surface of the water as if gravity does not exist. It lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and, when it senses danger, instantly runs off the tree and rushes across the water, pushing off with its paws at such a speed that it does not sink. The secret lies in its narrow, webbed fingers — when running, they spread out, increasing the support area, while its powerful hind legs take sharp steps, preventing it from sinking. It seems as if it is running on water by some miracle, but in reality, it is an excellent adaptation to life in swampy areas.

The body length of an adult reaches 120-130 centimeters, most of which is taken up by a powerful tail. The coloration depends on the species and can vary from brown, olive, and brownish to almost black.

The body is tall, massive, and compressed on the sides. The head is large with a short jaw. The fingers of the hind limbs have narrow fins that help the reptile swim.

Distinguishing males from females can be identified by the following characteristics:

  • males are significantly larger than females;
  • the sail on its back. The male's sail is larger and more pronounced.
  • males are more aggressive.

At home, Weber's sailfin lizard is usually kept. This is a fairly difficult reptile to keep, requiring certain skills and experience from the breeder.

It is important to understand that this is a wild animal that can bite or strike with its powerful tail. During the breeding season, males can behave quite aggressively and unpredictably. Therefore, caution should be exercised when handling the lizard.

Terrarium

Sailfin lizards are kept in vertical or cubic terrariums. The recommended size for one individual should be 170*120*170 cm. Most of the bottom should be occupied by a water body with a depth of at least 25 cm. It is very important to have high-quality filtration.

Note! It is essential to install driftwood, islands, various stones, and other objects that will serve as a resting place and shelter for the lizard. The back wall can be decorated with bark or other materials suitable for climbing.

Microclimate

This animal loves moisture. The humidity level in the terrarium should be kept within the following range 70-80%. If necessary, spray the contents of the terrarium several times a day using a spray bottle.

Hydrosaurus amboinensis

It is important to regularly monitor temperature fluctuations. During the day, the thermometer should read between 28-30 degrees, and at night – 20-25 degrees. At the heating point, the maximum temperature can reach 32 degrees. For this purpose, you can use special heated mats or lamps.

The lizard's daylight hours last 12 hours. For normal metabolism and health maintenance, the reptile should be illuminated with a UV lamp. You can buy one at a specialty store.

Must be installed in the terrarium hygrometer and thermometer. Without these devices, it is very difficult to maintain a comfortable microclimate.

Features

  1. Young lizards and adults cannot be kept in the same terrarium due to the possibility of cannibalism.
  2. It is important to clean the terrarium regularly. Maintenance cleaning should be done once a week or more often, and a general cleaning once a month.
  3. Do not carry the reptile in your hands if it is afraid of you or struggles to escape. This can cause stress. Get it used to your hands gradually.
  4. If there are signs of illness or behavioral changes, consult a herpetologist immediately.

Diet

The basis of the diet of sailfin lizards at home consists of:

  • dandelion leaves;
  • lettuce;
  • grated vegetables
  • pieces of ripe fruit.

Male Hydrosaurus microlophus

Protein foods such as locusts, mealworms, and cockroaches are preferred. Special complete feeds can be given.

Please note! Lizards are rarely fed newborn mice or chicks.

Each feeding includes vitamin D3 and mineral supplements. Adults are fed once every 2-3 days. Youngsters need to be fed daily.

It is distinguished by its brown color with a yellowish or light green pattern. Some individuals have almost black spots. Males are more brightly colored than females.

Sulawesi black sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus celebensis)

Endemic to Indonesia. The head, neck, shin area, and shoulders of these lizards are completely black.

Indonesian giant sailfin dragon (Hydrosaurus microlophus)

Another endemic species of Indonesia, found exclusively on the island of Sulawesi. This is the largest and heaviest species of sailfin lizard.

Philippine sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus pustulatus)

Endemic to the Philippines. Adult reptiles grow up to 1 meter in length. The main color is greenish-gray. Like other species, they have a sail-shaped crest on their backs.

Weber's sea dragon (Hydrosaurus weberi)

A grayish-brown or olive-green lizard with yellow scales on its back. The largest individuals grow up to 120 cm in length.

Reproduction

Sailfin lizards are oviparous. Young individuals begin to reproduce at the age of 2 years. The mating season is from February to April.

After fertilization, the female lays eggs in 10-11 weeks. To do this, she digs a hole in wet sand. One clutch can contain up to 15 eggs measuring 3-4 cm. After laying the clutch, the female leaves and does not return. no involvement in the life of offspring.

Most reptile diseases occur due to poor care and poor nutrition. The most common problems include the following.

  1. Parasites. Most often, infection occurs when items purchased in a store or taken from nature are not properly disinfected.
  2. Boils and ulcers. These arise as a result of contamination of the terrarium and the presence of injuries on the skin.
  3. Bone deformation. This is the first sign of a vitamin D3 and mineral deficiency, and also indicates that the reptile is not being fed properly.
  4. Muzzle injuries. These are common in lizards kept in terrariums that are too small.
  5. Joint problems. This can be caused by vitamin deficiency, as well as lack of exercise due to the small size of the terrarium.

If you notice any problems, you should consult a veterinarian. herpetologist, and review the conditions of their enclosure. If there are several sick reptiles in one terrarium, they must be quarantined.

Interesting facts about the animal

The sailfin lizard is one of the most striking examples of how inventive nature can be. Its ability to run swiftly across the water's surface seems like a miracle, but in reality, it is the result of subtle adaptation. It is not magic, but ingenious mechanics perfected by evolution.

This ability shows how incredible talents can be hidden in seemingly ordinary creatures. The lizard does not just survive in its environment, it masters it perfectly, turning the water barrier into a high-speed track. Its agility and speed are its main weapons and defense.

Phenomena such as the sailfin lizard make us marvel once again at the diversity of life. They remind us that nature is full of amazing surprises, if only we take a closer look at the inhabitants of our planet. This small reptile is a great example of how life finds the most unexpected and effective ways to thrive.
