Among hundreds of species of aquarium plants, cryptocorynes occupy a special place. It is a whole world of amazing shapes and colors, where each variety is a small discovery. And today we will get acquainted with one of the most spectacular and mysterious — Cryptocoryne Mi Oya.
This plant cannot be confused with others. Its main pride is its deep, richly colored leaves. They can shimmer from dark olive to chocolate and even burgundy, especially in good lighting. The surface of the leaf often has a velvety appearance with a beautiful texture, which gives the bush a noble and slightly mysterious look.
Cryptocoryne Mi Oya is an ideal candidate for creating contrasting spots in an aquarium. Against the backdrop of the bright greenery of other plants, it looks like a precious stone. Its unpretentious nature makes it an excellent choice for both experienced aquarists and those who are just beginning to discover the world of underwater jungles.
Distribution area
In its natural environment, Cryptocoryne Wendtii is widespread in Southeast and South Asia. But Mi Oya grows exclusively on the coast of the river of the same name.
Cryptocoryne Mi Oya is not just an aquatic plant, but a real highlight in the underwater landscape. With its narrow, gracefully curved leaves of a rich brown-olive hue, it looks like a beauty from the tropics that instantly enlivens any aquarium. Despite its exotic appearance, it is quite unpretentious and suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. The main thing is not to rush, give it time to adapt, and it will reward you with thick, lush greenery, creating the atmosphere of a real underwater jungle.
Growing and care
By following a few rules and knowing the peculiarities of breeding this subspecies, growing Mi Oya will become a fascinating process. The main thing is to prevent the aquarium from becoming overgrown. In such conditions, the plant will fade into the background against larger aquarium cultures.
General care recommendations:
- The optimal size for the aquarium is a tank with a height of 50 cm. It is also possible to keep it in a small aquarium. But in this case, Mi Oya will be small in size and will be used mainly as a background plant. This species of Cryptocoryne grows to form sparse thickets.
- The recommended placement is in the center, closer to the front glass.
- Although Mi Oya is not demanding in terms of temperature, it is better to keep the plant in a tropical aquarium. Advanced aquascapers grow Cryptocoryne in herbariums.
- Its growth rate is slow, but this species grows evenly throughout the year.
- Coexistence with crustaceans, especially shrimp, is not recommended.

Cryptocoryne Mi Oya shows its best decorative qualities in a humid greenhouse environment.
Optimal water parameters
Medium hardness water is optimal for keeping. In a soft water environment or with strong pH fluctuations, Mi Oya grows worse and sheds its leaf plates. Reducing the total hardness to 4° and below can lead to plant depression.
Recommended hydrochemical parameters:
- temperature — 22–28°C;
- pH — 6.5–8.0;
- carbonate hardness — 5–11 dKH;
- total hardness — 9–16°dGH.

Lowering the temperature to 22 °C can lead to growth cessation. Mi Oya grows well in both old and fresh water, so it does not need regular water changes.
Lighting requirements
To achieve a vivid leaf color, Mi Oya should be kept in conditions of intense lighting. Then the leaf plates will become succulent and acquire a rich hue. Moderate shading does not adversely affect growth, but the decorative qualities suffer.
Both natural and artificial lighting that is close to the natural spectrum is suitable. Lighting can be provided using incandescent lamps and LB-type fluorescent lamps. The recommended length of daylight hours is 12 hours.
Soil requirements
This parameter is not of significant importance. Both nutritious and inert substrates can be used. However, for better growth, it is advisable to purchase a nutritious substrate.
Since Mi Oya forms a powerful root system, the recommended layer thickness is 7 cm.
Need for feeding
In aquariums with a large number of fish, there is no need for additional feeding. Mi Oye gets enough nutrition from the fish food.
The main thing is to control the calcium concentration in the water. This subspecies needs large amounts of this element.
Features of reproduction
In aquarium conditions, only vegetative reproduction is possible. Daughter bushes form on the rhizome.
Once at least four leaf plates appear on the daughter shoot, this fragment is ready to be transplanted to a new location.
Cryptocoryne Mi Oya is a real gem for aquarium plant lovers. Its unusual, rich coloration, ranging from olive to chocolate, can create a truly mysterious and deep atmosphere in your underwater world.
It does not require any extraordinary effort on your part. All it needs is stable conditions, moderate light, and nutritious soil. This plant is the perfect choice for those who want to add elegance and contrast to their aquarium without turning maintenance into a constant struggle.
Place it in the middle or foreground, give it some time, and you will see how this “dark-skinned beauty” begins to reveal its character. It will become the most expressive accent around which the entire composition is built, giving your aquarium the look of a wild, untouched jungle.
