Eleocharis: a beautiful underwater lawn

Imagine a thick, velvety carpet of emerald greenery spreading across the bottom of your aquarium. This is Eleocharis, or, as aquarists often call it, “threadgrass” or “layered lawn.” This amazing plant can turn an ordinary home tank into a real living underwater landscape, giving it a well-groomed and natural look.

Eleocharis is valued for its unpretentiousness and rapid growth. It forms dense turf from thin, grass-like leaves that can serve as the perfect foreground or green background for your underwater composition. Small shrimp will happily scurry around in such a lawn, fry will hide there, and schools of fish will rest there.

To keep your lawn looking lush and bright, it needs very little: good lighting and periodic mowing. Regular trimming stimulates the plant to grow wider, creating that dense and beautiful carpet. Even a beginner can handle this, making Eleocharis an excellent choice for your first underwater lawn.

Plant description

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Eleocharis is a member of the genus Eleocharis, which includes about 260 species. Many of them are successfully grown in aquariums. Despite the fact that from a biological point of view it is a full-fledged weed, it is actively used in the creation of aquascapes.

The alternative name, needle grass, did not come about by accident. The leaves of this plant are “replaced” by narrow, needle-like stems.

There are two varieties common in Russia:

  • Sitnyag needle-like. Tall grass with sharp stems, reaching 15 cm in length. The plant prefers moist areas and meadows. It blooms periodically, but the flowers are not decorative.

  • Sitnyag Tiny. This plant has many subspecies that grow almost all over the globe, except for cold continents and the northern part of South America. The stems reach a height of 10 cm.

In terms of care, these species do not differ from each other.

Plant morphology:

  • The stems are stiff, slender, needle-shaped, light green in color with a brown tip at the top.
  • The rhizome is weak, branched, and thread-like.
  • The spikelets are small and elliptical in shape.
  • The flowers are bisexual and arranged in a spiral.
  • The fruit is white and rounded.

This plant can reach a height of 45 cm. In natural conditions, it blooms from June to October. Outwardly, it resembles Eleocharis parvula, which has a shorter stem.

Distribution area

Eleocharis is widespread almost everywhere. Sitnyag is often found in Asian, North African countries, and Australia. In its natural environment, it prefers to grow along lakes, rivers, ditches, and swamps, covering the ground with an emerald carpet.

Eleocharis is a plant that can turn the bottom of an aquarium into a real underwater lawn. Although in nature it grows in swamps and along the shores of reservoirs, in an aquarium its delicate green threads grow thickly, like grass, creating a cozy and natural look. It is unpretentious, grows well even in average lighting, and is suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. The main thing is to be patient: Eleocharis does not grow very quickly, but the result is worth it.

Growing and care

The plant is not difficult to grow.

One of the main problems faced by aquarists is controlling its spread. It is capable of overcoming even partitions installed in the soil.

General recommendations:

  • It should be planted in a medium or large aquarium.
  • A low water level is preferable. Under other conditions, Eleocharis may stop growing.
  • The plant takes a long time to get used to a new place.
  • Since Eleocharis has seasonal growth, a cold aquarium is more suitable for it.
  • This weed reproduces very quickly, so it needs to be trimmed seasonally. You can cut the stems at the root, which promotes the formation of more squat bushes. Or you can use the fillet method with vertically positioned scissors.
  • To prevent this plant from becoming overgrown with algae, the water should be changed regularly and the soil cleaned of organic matter.

It is advisable to place needle-leaved waterweed in the background and dwarf waterweed in the foreground. In small tanks, it successfully replaces long-stemmed plants, shading the back wall of the herbarium. In large tanks, it can be planted in the center. The plant is also suitable for spawning.

Optimal water parameters

Eleocharis prefers aquariums with clean water.

Recommended hydrochemical parameters:

  • total hardness — up to 14° dH.

Sittag tolerates cold well and is comfortable even at 14°C. However, it can die at high temperatures.

Lighting requirements

Eleocharis thrives in both natural and artificial lighting and does not like direct sunlight. Diffused light is preferable. Otherwise, it will be engulfed by algae.

Incandescent lamps are not recommended. Fluorescent lamps and side lighting are the best options. The optimal power is 0.5 W/l, and the recommended daylight duration is up to 14 hours.

Soil quality

Eleocharis does not grow well in poor-quality soil. It is advisable to purchase a fine-grained sand and gravel mixture and lay it in a 3 cm layer.

Need for fertilization

Eleocharis obtains all the nutrients it needs from the water and silted soil, so mineral fertilizers are not necessary.

Reproduction characteristics

Noracora WWNoracora WW

The plant propagates by ground cuttings that form near the mother stem. This process is similar to growing ferns.

The shoots do not take root for a long time, so it is better to keep them in a tank with a low water level. This measure will help young shoots to form rhizomes faster and take root in the soil.

Then the young plants are planted in the soil in small groups, immersing them 2 cm into the substrate. After that, the stems should be shortened to 3 cm. Since Eleocharis has a long acclimatization period, this will promote the faster emergence of new shoots.

Variations of the name

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

Among aquarists, Eleocharis (Needle Grass) is also known as Needle Marsh Grass.

Eleocharis is truly one of the best choices if you dream of a living, velvety lawn at the bottom of your aquarium. Its delicate greenery and soft texture create a stunning natural landscape that is pleasing to the eye and serves as an excellent backdrop for any fish.

What is particularly nice is that this plant is suitable even for beginners. It does not require complex care or powerful lighting. With sufficient light and nutritious soil, Eleocharis grows quite quickly, forming a dense carpet.

Such a green carpet is not only beautiful but also practical. It helps keep the water clean, provides shelter for fry and small inhabitants, and its roots strengthen the soil. This enlivens the entire underwater world, making it more natural and harmonious.

If you want to give your aquarium a well-groomed, stylish look with minimal effort, go ahead and choose Eleocharis. A few bunches, a little patience, and your underwater kingdom will have its own beautiful lawn.
