Description

Hypancistrus Zebra L046 belongs to the family of locariid catfish. It is endemic. This means that in nature it can only be found in one body of water, the Xingu River in Brazil. Like almost all catfish, this animal stays in the lower layers. Most often, these are areas where daylight does not penetrate. They have strong currents and the water is highly saturated with oxygen.

At the same time, Hypanistrus zebra prefers to stay in areas where there are burrows, thickets, caves, and other shelters. As a rule, there are no plants there, nor are there any submerged trees. This means that if you keep this pet in your artificial pond, it does not need driftwood, real flora, etc. Its biotope is a dark aquarium with lots of shelters and stones.

It is worth noting that the Brazilian authorities carefully protect this animal. The Institute of Natural Resources has compiled a list of fauna that can be caught in rivers and lakes and then exported. Hypanciurus is not included in it. This means that catching and exporting it is strictly prohibited. Therefore, if you see it in a pet store, the catfish were either artificially bred in captivity or brought in by poachers. At the same time, their species is currently dying out. And perhaps the world of aquarium keeping will help save it, as it once did with cardinals.

Keeping and caring for them in an aquarium

No special approach is needed for this fish to delight the aquarist's eye. Hypancistrus zebra is quite unpretentious. Especially when it comes to individuals that have been bred by aquarists. When this catfish first appeared in pet stores, there was debate about how it should be kept and what conditions it would be most comfortable in. But, as is often the case, each side was right in its own way. The fact is that these animals adapt to different conditions even in nature. For example:

Water parameters. The hardness can be anything. There are known cases when offspring were successfully obtained in both hard and soft water. But the main thing is that it should be warm, within 30-31 degrees. It is equally important to install an external filter and aerator, as these catfish prefer clean water with a high oxygen content. As for acidity, the indicator should be neutral.

Decoration. Sand is the best substrate to choose. You will need to create several hiding places. You can also place stones and, if you like, a couple of driftwood pieces. The flora is not important, but if you wish, you can add undemanding species such as Javanese moss.

Lighting. Lighting is not important, as these catfish are used to living in the dark.

Aquarium. It can be small, as these fish grow to no more than 8 cm. However, it should be noted that they prefer strong currents, and it would be better if they had plenty of space and could move freely, sit in shelters, etc.

Feeding

To make your pets feel more comfortable during feeding, it is advisable to set up a place where they will eat their food. This should be an area without soil and fenced off with stones. At the same time, it is important that there are shelters nearby where the fish can rest.

As for the food itself, it should sink to the bottom. All kinds of flakes floating on the surface are not suitable. But it is worth considering that the tablets that are usually given to ancistrus are not suitable. These catfish, well known in aquarium keeping, feed on plant food, while the zebra hypancistrus prefers meat food. It should make up the bulk of the diet.

Both live and frozen foods can be added to the menu. These can include bloodworms, mussels, shrimp, tubifex, and brine shrimp. They usually eat vegetation reluctantly, but sometimes zucchini or pumpkin can be placed in the aquarium. Portions should be moderate, as these pets have a good appetite and will eat non-stop.

Compatibility

This catfish has a peaceful nature and does not bother its neighbors. However, the difficulty in keeping it with other fish lies in the non-standard conditions in which these pets are comfortable living. Not all representatives of the fauna can withstand a temperature of 30-31 degrees, and not all of them like strong currents. Because of this, it is extremely difficult to find a suitable neighbor that will thrive in the same conditions. Suitable options include phantoms, erythrozones, clown barbs, Sumatran barbs, and cherry barbs. However, as a rule, hypancistrus are kept in species-specific aquariums.

So, the zebra cichlid is a truly special and very beautiful inhabitant of the aquarium world. Its unique black and white coloration leaves no one indifferent, making the fish a real star among bottom-dwelling catfish.

However, behind this beauty lies a character that requires attention and a certain amount of experience. This fish is quite finicky about water quality and cleanliness. It is not suitable for beginners who are just starting to learn about aquariums.

If you are prepared to provide the zebra with stable conditions, cool and oxygen-rich water, it will become an amazing and long-lived pet. Watching its unhurried life among driftwood and stones is a special pleasure.

In general, Hypanistrus zebra is the choice for an avid aquarist who appreciates natural uniqueness and is ready to put effort into creating the perfect underwater world for such a demanding but incredibly impressive catfish.
