Anubias Pinto: striking variegation

In the world of aquarium plants, there are stars that catch the eye at first glance. Anubias Pinto is one of them. It is not just a green bush, but a real living canvas where nature has revealed itself as an artist.

Its main feature is the unique variegated coloration of its leaves. They look as if they have been painted by hand: bright, almost snow-white spots and streaks are scattered across a dark green background. The patterns are never repeated, making each specimen one of a kind.

Growing this plant is a challenge for aquarists and a source of special pride. To preserve its fantastic coloration, you need to create special conditions. But it is precisely this complexity that makes the process so exciting.

Let's figure out what Anubias Pinto is, where its unusual beauty comes from, and how to grow this miracle in your own aquarium.

Distribution

Anubias are native to African tropical forests, swamps, and rivers. However, you will not find Pinto among them. It was bred by German breeders from the Nana variety and, unfortunately, does not occur in the wild. Pinto's leaves are speckled white and green and look very impressive in an aquarium.

Growing and care

This type of Anubias is quite unpretentious and easy to maintain.

Following a few rules will help you grow a strong and healthy plant:

  • Pinto should be provided with the necessary water parameters (temperature, acidity, and hardness).
  • Lighting should not be too bright, but not too dim either.
  • When planting, the roots must receive sufficient aeration.
  • The water in the aquarium must be changed and filtered regularly.

Anubias will respond positively to mineral fertilizers and carbon dioxide, but it will grow without them. By the way, Pinto is a very slow-growing plant and produces 1-2 new leaves per month.

The plant can be planted in various types of aquariums (regular, nano, paludariums, ripariums), in soil and on solid surfaces (driftwood, stone, lava, brick). Thread, fishing line, or glue is used to better secure the seedling in place.

Water parameters for ideal maintenance

It is important to provide Pinto with the following water parameters:

  • warm temperature – from 22°C to 28°C;
  • soft or medium hardness – 0 to 18 dH;
  • slightly acidic, slightly alkaline, or neutral acidity – pH from 5.0 to 9.0.

While the plant is tolerant of water acidity and hardness, the temperature should not be low, otherwise Pinto's growth rate will slow down significantly.

Regular water changes of 1/3 of the total volume of the aquarium are necessary, as well as filtration and aeration systems. Without proper cleaning, Anubias will become overgrown with algae and begin to lose its leaves.

Lighting requirements

Unlike its relatives, Pinto does not tolerate low light very well and begins to turn green, losing its variegated color with white speckles. But bright light is not to its liking either and can lead to algae growth and slow growth.

The ideal option is an average level with a daylight duration of 11-12 hours per day.

Soil and substrate requirements

Anubias Pinto can grow both in soil and without it, as well as with or without a nutrient substrate.

Various combinations are possible:

  • in soil with substrate: a good solution for submerged and emergent cultivation (paludariums, ripariums), when the plant receives nutrients only from the soil, but it is also suitable for submerged cultivation.
  • in soil without substrate: another universal solution, but one that requires increased attention from the aquarist (feeding, monitoring root health).
  • without soil, on a solid surface: this option is only possible in aquariums where the plant can obtain the necessary micro- and macroelements from the water.

It should be remembered that Anubias are susceptible to root rot if planted too deep in the soil. To avoid this, the rhizome must always have a supply of fresh water and air. It is better to lightly sprinkle the roots of Pinto from above or cover them with stones.

Anubias Pinto is an unusual aquarium plant that immediately catches the eye with its variegated foliage: cream, yellowish, and almost white spots are scattered chaotically on dark green leaves. This coloration makes it a real decoration for any aquaterrarium, especially since the plant is unpretentious, grows slowly, and is not afraid of shade. Unlike the common anubias, the color of the Pinto can change depending on the light and conditions, which adds to its mystery. This plant is chosen not for its size, but for its unique appearance — it is like a living coloring book in the world of aquarium plants.

Fertilizer requirements

Fertilizers and supplements are not essential for this plant, but they do offer certain benefits:

  • this will accelerate growth and development;
  • it will support the health of the Anubias in excessive lighting conditions.
  • will help a transplanted or young plant take root in the soil.

Mineral fertilizers can be added to the water or under the root, but since Pinto grows slowly, feeding should not be too frequent.

The plant can also be fed with CO2 (carbon dioxide) using special systems that can be purchased in a store or made independently.

Propagation and planting

Adult Pinto reproduces vegetatively: by dividing the rhizome or cutting off the “daughter.” When dividing, the roots are broken or cut so that the plant forms side shoots. In the second method of reproduction, a segment with growth points and roots is cut off from the mother plant with a knife or scissors and planted separately.

Planting a new plant is done as follows:

  1. A “daughter” separates from the adult Anubias. If the plant is purchased, its roots are first cleaned of substrate.
  2. The seedling is placed in the ground or on a solid surface.
  3. In the ground: the roots are slightly buried or sprinkled on top. On the surface: the plant is fixed with thread or glue.

Anubias Pinto is not just a plant, but a real aquarium decoration. Its unique leaves with contrasting white or cream streaks look like a work of art created by nature itself. It brings a touch of sophistication and light to the underwater world, becoming its main accent.

It is not that difficult to grow it if you remember its main needs: soft light, clean water, and patience. This plant is not in a hurry, but its slow growth is part of its character. Over time, with proper care, it will form a luxurious, colorful bush that you will be proud of.

If you are looking for a hardy and incredibly beautiful plant, Anubias Pinto is an excellent choice. It has proven that a bright appearance can be combined with a strong character. This is a case where the aquarist gets both aesthetic pleasure and an unpretentious, reliable pet for many years.
