Imagine a miniature alligator that has mastered the treetops instead of swamps. Such an amazing creature really exists, and it is called an abronia. This lizard looks like a creature from ancient times, straight out of the pages of a fairy tale book.
It inhabits the distant tropical forests of New Guinea and nearby islands. The arboreal alligator spends its entire life high above the ground, in the dense foliage of trees. Its prehensile tail and strong paws with long fingers are perfectly adapted for life in the branches.
It got its unusual nickname, “alligator lizard,” because of its distinctive appearance. Its powerful head with scaly skin, strong jaws, and piercing gaze make it remarkably similar to the famous predator, only in miniature. It is one of the most unusual and memorable inhabitants of tree crowns.

Range, habitat, and living conditions

All species of abronia live in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and other Central American countries. Unlike many other lizards, tree alligators cannot tolerate heat. These reptiles are most active at temperatures of +24-27 degrees Celsius. At lower temperatures, the lizards bask in their nests.
Abronia lizards lead a tree-dwelling lifestyle. They build their nests in the trunks of rotting but still sturdy trees. The reptiles' limbs are well developed, allowing them to climb trees without fear of falling.

Some individuals are brown or gray in color. Gila monsters have a slow metabolism, so they feed very rarely. However, when they go hunting, they eat as much as they can. The animal can eat up to 35% of its own weight at one time.

Which works in a similar way to a snake. The animal can sense prey from a distance of more than 1 km. To prevent its prey from escaping, the venomous lizard bites it and injects saliva containing a small amount of venom into the wound. This paralyzes the victim for a while. Its favorite food is bird eggs, which the lizard easily cracks with its powerful jaws.! In difficult times, the venomous lizard may eat carrion or hibernate until better times. Without eating, the animal can survive for up to 5-6 months.

Their diet consists mainly of rodents, bird eggs, chicks, and bats. Gila monsters hunt for prey on the surface or underground. This can include bird nests, animal burrows, or caves with bats.
Please note! sexual dimorphism is not pronounced..

The search for food is ensured.
The mating season begins in late winter or early spring, when the reptiles wake up from hibernation. At this time, the males fight for the right to mate with the female. They grab each other with their teeth and try to knock each other onto their backs.
It is best to keep abronia in vertical mesh terrariums. This will allow you to create optimal ventilation for the reptile, as well as a good supply of natural sunlight. An adult specimen requires a terrarium measuring 50 cm long, 50 cm wide, and 75 cm high.

Soil
The following are used as substrate sphagnum moss. The layer should be 5-10 cm thick. Moss is best suited for abronia, as it maintains optimal humidity levels and keeps the snake cool in hot weather.

Important! The moss must be kept moist. However, it is not necessary to spray the entire substrate. It is best if you have a “dry” island, for example, at the heating point. Also, from time to time, you need to let the moss dry completely.
Microclimate
Terrarium lighting requirements uVB 7-10% ultraviolet lamps. During the summer months, the terrarium can be taken outside for fresh air. The duration of daylight hours should be 10-12 hours.

Please note! Do not allow the abronia to overheat above +33 degrees or overcool below -7 degrees.
Twice a day, the substrate and the lizard should be sprayed with clean, settled water from a spray bottle. Twice a week, it is necessary to arrange terrarium drippers, which supply water continuously for several hours. Once a month, simulate rain for the abronia by continuously spraying the lizard, substrate, and all contents of the terrarium for 15-20 minutes.

Abronias love humidity, but cannot tolerate dampness. Allow the soil to dry out completely from time to time. Also, pay special attention to good ventilation in the terrarium.
Terrarium contents
The terrarium must have a container with water and a log, which will serve as both a shelter and a place for the lizard to rest. If desired, you can add live plants in pots.

Care
It is important to change the water in the drinking bowl daily and remove any food remains from the terrarium. Once a week, you need to do a thorough cleaning, and once a month, a general cleaning. Use special detergents and cleaning products to care for the terrarium.

The abronia is an unusual lizard that looks more like a small green alligator than a typical lizard. It lives in the trees of the warm forests of Central America, clinging to branches with its clawed feet and rarely coming down to the ground. Its body is covered with bumpy scales, and its movements are smooth and measured. Despite its appearance, it is harmless and feeds mainly on small insects. Abronia is a rare and little-studied creature that looks like it came out of a picture from prehistoric times.
Diet

To maintain good health, the diet of an abronia must be varied. It is a predator that feeds on live food.
At home, the following are suitable for feeding lizards:
- green caterpillars;
- crickets;
- snails;
- mealworms;
- cockroaches;
- spiders;
- flies, etc.

Best used for feeding insects bred specifically for this purpose. However, some owners catch insects outside.

Note: Abronia's diet should be varied. Do not feed the lizard exclusively protein-rich insects. Give preference to invertebrates that feed on plant food.
To maintain vitamins and minerals in the body, the lizard is given calcium and vitamin supplements.

Reproduction

Abronia are viviparous lizards. Reptiles reach sexual maturity at the age of two. The breeding season is from May to November. Females give birth only once a year.
Pregnant females have special calcium bags. This is where calcium accumulates, which is necessary for the full development of offspring.
Female Abronia graminea
Important! The mass appearance of babies occurs in April-June. A female can give birth to up to 13 young at a time. At first, young abronia stay close to their mother, but soon they scatter and become completely independent and isolated lizards.

Diseases and health maintenance

Abronia are quite healthy. When kept at home, diseases arise due to violations of feeding and care rules. Most often, lizards develop rickets, have problems with molting, and suffer from various injuries.
What to do if a reptile is sick?
- Contact immediately herpetologist: he will examine the lizard, make an accurate diagnosis, and select a treatment.
- Isolate the infected pet from the rest of the group. Disinfect the terrarium.
- Strictly follow the course of treatment and inform the specialist of any changes in the reptile's condition.

Under no circumstances should you self-medicate your reptile!
Interesting facts about the animal

The cost of an abronia depends on its species. The average price for an adult reptile ranges from 49,000 to 100,000 rubles.
- The abronia population is steadily declining due to human activity. Today, these lizards are considered one of the rarest species.
- Abronia likes to sunbathe in the early morning, when the sun's rays are not as aggressive as during the day.
- When the temperature drops to +5 degrees, abronia gather in groups in their nests, which allows them to better retain heat.

Please note! The number of abronias in the wild is extremely small.
To preserve the population, great importance is attached to breeding reptiles in captivity. These are very bright and beautiful lizards, which are a real gem of the terrarium.
Abronia fimbriata
Abronia is an amazing example of how nature mixes the features of seemingly incompatible creatures. It got the name “alligator lizard” for a reason: its armored scales and powerful jaws really resemble a miniature crocodile. But unlike a crocodile, this reptile feels perfectly at home high above the ground, among the branches of trees.
Its life in the treetops is a delicate balance of strength and agility. Her powerful body helps her stay on uneven bark and cope with prey, while her prehensile tail serves as a reliable fifth point of support. To observe the abronia is to see how a predator, created for strength, has gracefully adapted to the vertical world of the forest.
Unusual creatures such as the alligator lizard remind us of the fragility of natural systems. Deforestation of tropical forests deprives it of its home, and the interest of collectors creates an additional threat. By preserving its habitat, we are protecting not just one species, but an entire unique link in the life of the jungle that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
