History of origin
One of the farms in the English county of Cornwall is where the history of the Cornish Rex starts. The proprietor of this farm, Nina Enismore, was involved in the breeding of rabbits; ironically, these were Astrix breed rabbits, which are identified by their wavy wool.
In 1950, Nina"s ordinary domestic cat gave birth to a litter, and one kitten was very different from the others, it was thin, with long paws, a pointed muzzle and soft wavy fur. The woman kept it for herself and named it Callibunker. This cat was destined to become the founder of a new breed. Nina showed her unusual cat to breeders, who advised her to conduct cross-breeding, that is, to cross the grown-up Callibunker with his mother. The experiment was a success, and later, through trial and error, it was possible to consolidate the unusual appearance and increase the population of curly cats. In 1957, a couple of cats of the new breed were brought to the United States. Due to a lack of genetic material, they began to cross them with other breeds, this affected the external type, but played a positive role in popularizing curly cats in the world. In 1979, the Cornish Rex breed was officially recognized by feline associations.
Apart from Cornish Rexes, there exist multiple other acknowledged breeds of felines with wavy hair, including German and Devon Rex, as well as the very young Selkirk and Ural Rex. Breeds vary from one another not only in terms of appearance but also in the traits of their coats, and each breed has its own gene that causes waviness.

A distinct breed of cat, the Cornish Rex is renowned for its high level of energy, playful disposition, and soft, curly coat. This breed is notable for its striking appearance and loving nature due to its large ears and elegant, slender body. Because they are outgoing, gregarious, and enjoy being the center of attention, Cornish Rex cats make excellent companions for both individuals and families.
Breed description and standards
Medium-sized cats with wavy hair, Cornish Rexes have long, elegant legs that are slightly stretched and incredibly flexible. Males are larger than females by a significant amount.
Head and muzzle
The forehead is low and the head is wedge-shaped. The nose tip and well-defined chin meet to form a vertical line. The large, rounded tips of the ears are set high and have a very wide base. Almond-shaped eyes with slightly oblique eye spacing are present. The cheekbone structure is distinct. The nose is long, accounting for one-third of the head’s length, and the area where the whiskers are clearly depressed.
Body, paws, tail
The Cornish has a small to medium-sized body. The upper body is long and lean. The hips are proportionate to the entire body and quite strong and muscular. When the cat stands in a natural position, its back forms an arch and has a smooth curve. Strong shoulders. Long and thin legs are present. The paws have a slight oval shape. Tail is long and thin.
Wool and colors
By the time they turn one year old, a Cornish Rexes’ coat is fully developed and should fall in uniform waves over their body. One noteworthy characteristic is the lack of guard hair. For the breed, all colors—including colorpoint—are accepted.
Character
The most common way that Cornish Rexes exhibit their personality is through their continued active and impulsive nature, much like kittens, well into adulthood. They use their creativity, curiosity, extraordinary intelligence, and dexterity to figure out how to accomplish goals or get to places that are out of their reach. Cornish Rexes will not put up with being ignored or left alone.
They are incredibly devoted to their owner, but they also frequently prioritize their habits and needs over other people’s needs, so naturally, people should take that into consideration. How well a pet will get along with others is hard to predict. Everything is dependent upon the cat’s age, temperament, and the new neighbor’s personality.
Despite coming from farms, Cornish Rexes appear to have been made just for apartment living; they are true homebodies who seldom venture outside and dislike change of scenery. The transition period for adult or kitten cats moving into a new home can extend up to three weeks. The animal meows and behaves erratically during this time; it requires extra care, attention, and provision of all necessities, including a comfortable home and an abundance of toys.
Care
The upkeep of a Cornish Rex involves a lot of labor and strict adherence to regulations. First of all, keep in mind that these cats detest drafts, the cold, and moisture in general.
The wavy short hair must be combed regularly, but very carefully, trying to preserve the curl. Use only brushes with natural bristles. You should comb your cat no more than 1-2 times a week, the rest of the time it is better to collect fallen hairs with wet hands. You need to bathe the Carnish Rex regularly, you can even make an individual schedule with an average frequency of 1-2 times a month. Be sure to use special shampoos that are washed off strictly in the direction of hair growth. After bathing, blot the fur with a bath towel, but do not dry it with a hairdryer and do not allow the pet to lick itself, try to distract it with games until the fur dries on its own.
Hygiene of the eyes, ears and oral cavity
Cleanse the cats’ ears and wash their eyes as needed. Use specific veterinary medications or a decoction of calendula, chamomile, and St. John’s wort for this. Additionally, it is a good idea to get the kitten used to brushing its teeth. The procedure should be performed once a month or less. You don’t need to rinse your mouth after using special pastes intended for animals. Healthy cats can get away with not trimming their claws; they do this to keep people and other animals safe from stray scratches and to give their paws a more tidier, well-groomed appearance. We trim our claws once a month on average.
Diet
The majority of Cornish Rexes are true gourmets who are always trying new things and rarely say no to new experiences. They also have a voracious appetite and never object to sharing the owner’s food.
Feed your pet on a schedule rather than as needed. It’s not always true that cats who beg for food are hungry. They ought to realize that the owner invites them to the feeder, which is filled in response to that invitation rather than because they keep meowing.
Depending on their age, adult cats may need to be fed two or three times a day. Your pet can have a diet made up of prepared foods or natural products. In the second scenario, wet canned food should make up the remaining food volume, with dry food making up one-sixth of it. Mixed feeding is not as prevalent. It is preferable to give full-fledged diets that are on par with or higher than the premium class when it comes to industrial feed. For instance:
- Eukanuba Top Condition 1+ – a classic product for daily feeding;
- Hills Feline Adult – Complete food for adult cats, comes in different flavors;
- Eagle Pack Adult Cat – the food is holistic, contains bacteria and microorganisms to improve digestion and intestinal microflora;
Orijen Cat 6 Fresh Fish – grain-free food for all breeds of cats; - Royal Canin Indoor or Sensible – food for adult cats living at home and for picky eaters.
Because Cornish Rexes have a tendency to overeat, it’s critical for their owners to recognize when their dog actually needs more energy because they are active and when giving them an extra serving is just the first step toward filling them up.
Health and life expectancy
Cornish Rexes are immune system and generally healthy. When given the right attention and sustenance, they hardly ever get colds, and prompt vaccination will shield breed members from a range of infectious illnesses. Cornish Rex can live up to 16 years with the right nutrition and care. The average lifespan is thirteen years.
Choosing a kitten and price
Although Cornish Rex is not the most popular breed, it will not be difficult to find kittens if there are no special needs; they are taken for themselves and will not be used for breeding or an exhibition career.
The cost of Cornish Rex kittens varies significantly. Since many of them are the product of careless or random matings, their prices range from 3 to 7,000 rubles, which is significantly less than what they would otherwise fetch.
You should make a responsible decision if you are interested in a purebred Cornish Rex kitten rather than one that looks like one. It is important that you observe the parents’ demeanor and appearance, as well as verify that all the paperwork is in order. You can only proceed to the next stage, which is selecting a child, after this. The kitten should have a voracious appetite and be friendly, playful, and not timid. He ought to look well, with clean eyes and fur.
It is important to remember that kittens do not fall in distinct waves and have straighter fur. Only after molting, which takes six to nine months, will they start to emerge. An average of 25,000 rubles is paid for kittens born in the cattery that have a pedigree from good producers.
