History of the Clumber Spaniel breed

There is no doubt that the English Clumber Spaniel made its appearance in Nottinghamshire. Regarding the breed’s ancestry, there are two theories.

The first claims that it was bred in France in the middle of the eighteenth century by the Duke de Noailles. This version claims that Alpine Spaniels were part of the Clumber family’s ancestry. One of the Duke’s favorites was sent to his friend, the Duke of Newcastle, in England following the outbreak of the French Revolution.

According to the second account of events, the dog was bred in England through a cross between an old spaniel, a bloodhound, and a St. Bernard.
